The double elim bracket will be just as many matches as round robin. People like a bracket more generally but round robin does give more finality. I think everyone though you would have the teams do round robin against each other, not just all of the teams face each other. Either way, that part should definitely be totem pole or Pokemon style. I think totem might be better due to counter picking or w/e though.

Random question, is there food around the venue, preferably walking distance? I was planning to bring a lunch or three, but if I can just get some grub near by that would work too.

The official policy is that no outside food or drink be allowed in the venue. The convention center has an exclusive contract with a caterer, so we are not even permitted to sell water. Actually having catering service would have cost a shit ton of money, compounded by the fact that there would be surcharges if we broke expected attendance–even if not everyone ate/drank. If you bring in bottled water for yourself, I think we’re cool. Brent said that he’s not going to be a total hard-ass on this subject. Just please don’t make it obvious, like ordering 10 pizzas for your friends and eating them in the casuals area.
There are a couple of pubs and restaurants within a block or two, but they’re neither cheap nor quick. Subway and pizza places available 4+ blocks away. So the cheaper/faster things are within a walkable distance, but expect to be gone for 30 minutes to an hour for that stuff.
edito: The JiB is within a 5 min drive. But I don’t think I’d call that a walkable distance. Which brings up the issue of parking. There’s free on street parking in the area, with slanted parking right in front of the venue itself. Across the street to the front is a pay lot, where I think it’s $5 or $8 for the day. If the on street fills up, and you park in the pay lot, you might have to repay if you leave then come back.
Whatever the case, the parking situation is probably less confusing for out of towners than last year. Since you can see the venue from the street, in addition to your parking options.
editiz part deux: There are 3 weddings being held elsewhere in the complex that day. Please try to be considerate and not leave fast food wrappers all over the street if you eat just outside the doors. I think it’ll be pretty obvious to the owners as to which party was responsible should that happen.
Owning a banquet hall has to be a very profitable business. Of course there’s upkeep and employing people but damn if you keep it booked you make hella money. Especially in Miami where they’re all overpriced and there’s quinces on top of the usual weddings and other parties every week. To give you an idea, NWM cost $2000 for the ENTIRE day and that’s less than what you pay for ONE NIGHT at a much smaller venue back home.
If only a taco truck would park itself outside. Beast.
Then it would be one smelly convention hall. And if someone were to light a match, the NW fighting game community would be vaporized in a blink of an eye. The only mark left by us would be our shadows, burnt into the walls and floors of the ruins that remain.
I just noticed that Stadium High School is within walking distance from the venue. I’ve never seen it in person. What the fuck is such a prestigious looking building doing in Tacoma? I know it’s like 100 years old, but I’m surprised it hasn’t been looted for its bricks. Kinda like what the Europeans did to the pyramids.
