Yeah I’m used to low entry-fee local/online tourneys without venue fees and stuff. It adds up quick, even just for someone from NJ like me who is only 45 mins away. $25 venue entry, $10 tourney entry, $4 bridge toll, $7 parking (per day), gas, food (get your own because the hotel charges like $8 for a tiny little wrap and 16 for a burger), and a lot of people buy a hotel room and drive from Ohio and Georgia like a couple guys I met. Also the NEC shirt was irresistible so I picked one up for $15. Most of the value in the event is hanging out with people and getting lots of casuals in - but this could be tough if you didn’t come with anyone and didn’t get a room set up with a game system.
Overall I had a good time. Got tons of respect on a stream being run by a friend of mine. Blew up a lot of people in morning pre-event casuals until I fought this FeiLong… and then Justin Wong! Only got one official match in: Dr. Chaos wrangled me into losers bracket which picks up tomorrow at 11:30AM.
SSF4 singles was such a fucking headache though. You had to jostle with 200 people in small areas for hours at a time trying to hear if someone calls your name for the 1 (and if your lucky) 2 matches per person they managed to squeeze into the entire day. It was outright torturous in my opinion. Much respect to the event staff because they had it tougher than the players.
