As someone who lives for all things politics, sociology, and film I couldn’t resist making a thread about such an unfortunate, but unique event which incorporate all 3 of my passions. I’ll spare the novel length OP, and just start with the most interesting questions on the topic:
Do you guys agree with the theater owners decision to cave in to North Korea’s threats of violence? I don’t want to side track this inherently complicated topic, but it really does exemplify the age old issue which was reignited by the 9/11 attacks and Patriot act of how do we as a nation balance security with freedom of speech? Is it in poor taste to make a film about the death of a currently active nation leader? In the wake of the Dark Knight Rises theater attack in Aurora CO, how much should we if at all let outside influence affect an everyday activity like going to the movies? How should the U.S. respond to North Korea’s cyberterrorism? Is anyone afraid of the U.S. government for using this situation as an excuse to further expand NSA’s stomping of our rights?
This is tricky situation all around, encompassing so many different concepts and variables it staggers the mind, and I know I’m probably going to get shit from a lot of you guys for saying this, but I think this sets a bad precedent emboldening North Korea as well as other nations to bully us, if a vague email referencing 9/11 can get us to close down a multi million dollar production around the country than what’s to stop them from doing it again? Every few years North Korea beats it’s chest declaring hellfire and brimstone to rain upon the U.S. if we don’t supply their starving population with food and every time we cave in and I don’t know what the right response is, but appeasement doesn’t seem to be working for us.
Oh and FUCK! I was looking forward to this film =/
EDIT: speaking of looking forward to films Malyasia>>>>>>>>>>North Korea in case there was any doubt.
Give North Korea Dennis Rodman in exchange for The Interview being released. We don’t want him, Rodman would probably like it, Kim Jong-Un loves Rodman, so everyone wins!
I had a lengthy, well-thought out post prepared… However, after reviewing the facts and the ridiculous cowardice of the people involved in this decision, this is surely the best response:
BITCH ASS NIGGAS DOING BITCH ASS NIGGA SHIT.
Cowards getting punked by a midget that lives 4000 miles away… Society is so pussified now, no wonder there’s an epidemic of “social justice warriors”…
I don’t agree with the threat and hacking…but who the fuck is so droll as to make a movie about killing a real, living person as opposed to an expie or an long dead famous person, like Hitler? I would’t call it an act of war, but Butterball has every right to see it as a direct threat. This movie was a dumb idea.
So what are we gonna do now? Cancel everything every time a phony bomb threat (and let’s be real probably 9 out of every 10 bomb threats is fake) gets phoned in?
The terrorists definitely won. Osama Bin Laden is probably laughing his virgin humping balls off wherever he’s at right now.
I agree that the movie was probably going to be ass, but its the principle of a multi-billion dollar studio caving to the demands of an ineffectual despot with delusions of grandeur instead of doing the American thing and giving that nigga a Stone Cold Steve Austin double finger salute.
This sets a terrible precedent, and now every scrub who feels slighted by satire is gonna start feeling themselves.
Comedy is dead man. Took so many Ls this year it’s insane. From now on, all it takes is a rumor circling on news feeds about a show or film poking fun at… ANYTHING… and studios will buckle and cancel the whole thing. OR they won’t risk producing comedies in the first place. It’s a fucking joyless dystopia.
It’s easy to wag your finger at Sony for kowtowing to pressure when you’ve got nothing at stake. I guess there’s a strong bro association but sad to see Rogen getting so much hate. Pineapple express will have him in my good graces for a while.
What’s even more alarming is that leak of the Hollywood studio’s Social Security numbers and such, Sony too right? After being warned for a while to update security protocols. Then the employees are left out in the cold on saving their own identities from theft, and lifelock sure wont help-that guy’s ceo and his openly claiming he wont be hacked I need to read about again remembering it was funny.
For all the multimillions they make, its like anything. Top down. Unions could be in there, but its called the SAG awards, not Union:Best Boy Grip awards. And they’re like any govt thing/laws sometimes. Behind the times on caring about tech and Internet threats.
Now, if you want your Seth Rogan and James Franco fix, those guys are everywhere already. I was channel surfing and those butt buddies are butt naked on the survival show where you usually see wilderness sunburns and at least 1 lady buttcrack.
Team America:World Police made Kim Senior’s day though. He became the James Bond Villain he always wanted to be. Kim Junior might be too oblivious to roll with it, more of a Bush Junior isn’t he?
Yeah, Sony was stupid as shit for not having better security protocols on ALL of their stuff…
But goddamn, at least go out in a blaze of FUCKING GLORY AND RELEASE THE FILM.
We got Russians making laser light shows of Obama sucking bananas like dicks and that shit hardly makes the news or makes folks wanna hack out their companies interweb eyeballs.
But why is this movie (whatever about the movie’s quality, irrelevant) different than the tons of 1980s bro movies about destroying communism, Middle East extremism, or some other contemporary threat to The Murican Way… and were released in theaters anyway?
Edit: It was the theater chains’ decision not to play the movie.
Because we’re living in a world now where any foreign power has instantaneous power to damage entities and countries for releasing such films without inflicting any direct physical harm that would result in a third world war.
Doesn’t make it any less bullshit, but if the USSR had the tools then that are available now, you can bet your ass they would’ve done the same thing.
