North Carolina Thread LIX

Still looking for place, people, and venues around the Gaston/Charlotte area that play on a regular basis! I’m really wanting to level my game up.

GG’s at Civil war. Hope everyone gets home as safely as we did. Tournament would have been 1000x better had the second pool started at a reasonable hour. Some of it was being run poorly and part of it was beyond the control of the people running the tournament. Overall I feel like the trip was worth it. Now its time for bed.

Sure thing, I can show you some stuff. I think I’ll be bringing my PS3 for Tekken and Arcana 3 casuals to the Gamefrog touranment (I think I’ll be going), so I can show you some stuff if you are there. If not, whenever the next session we’re at…

Also, my name is Rob. xD

That tournament was TERRIBLE.

Half of the TVs were laggy.

Pool A for AE starts at 2pm
Pool B for AE starts at 10pm (all but 2 NC players were in pool B)

WTH?!

To top it all off when we that drove 3+ hours to the tournament see how slowly and terribly everything ended up being ran by the end of the day (started off good) and decide to leave WITHOUT PLAYING 1 MATCH IN AE DESPITE WAITING 8 HOURS FOR OUR FIRST MATCH IN THE THE FIRST SCHEDULED GAME IN THE TOURNAMENT we are denied ourmoney back and given BS reasons like “You don’t get your money back at evo”. We hadn’t played ONE match and all we asked for was our AE entry fee back - nope not happening. the TO was a dick.

Match that garbage with brackets being messed up in MvC3 (I wasn’t the only person to not have their match called and mysteriously get given a loss), a great venue except for it not being able to handle that many people and being hotter then i don’t know what all day…

This was a terrible experience. I will never be going to back to VA. They couldn’t even keep the matches on stream going consistently and had huge delays all day long.

I don’t care how hard it is to run a tournament. If you are going to do it, do it right. Don’t run a tournament, attract out of state players, take their money and not be prepared to handle the job only to cry about how difficult it is to do when you royally screw up. If the TO admitted to how messed up things were and gave us our $ back for the AE entry I wouldn’t be as upset, but defending his garbage tournament by yelling things like “Tournaments take a long time, have you ever even been to a tournament before?!” really sealed the deal on this being a crappy event.

It was cool seing tom brady and ryry play, shout outs to Jon for making tom brady WORK for the win in MK9 - he almost took the match.

I hope EVO is real quick on the DQs for people not being on time this year- punctuality needs to be enforced. Too many folks have no concept of being on time period, unless they’ve been in the military or around the military.

Yeah VA tournament was mostly ass… the venue would have been a lot better if it weren’t designed for like a quarter of the people that were there. Fuckin no air conditioning at all in a room of hot and sweaty ass smelling gamers, buncha TVs with no consistent amount of lag so it was impossible to adjust to anything as far as timing. PS3 needs to have a rule in Marvel where you HAVE to play on the training stage, my match on stream with Robin… he picked the stage with THE MOST slowdown, it was dropping inputs everywhere, really frustrating for me.

The way they did pools made absolutely no sense whatsoever. Ae started at like 2, pool A ran ok, then they started marvel pool A instead of finishing AE to get some people out of there… I was one of the people unfortunate enough to have both my matches in pool B, so I didn’t get to play until pretty late. By the time AE pool B started at 10 PM I just didn’t care enough to stay and play on the shitty TVs in a 100 degree room. Me and Jos asked for our AE entry fee back since we were leaving and mostly got talked down to by Robin without a legit reason for why he didn’t want to give us our money back other than he just didn’t feel like doing it when we hadn’t played a single match yet.

Not a good experience, will not be going back.

Sorry to hear that CW sucked so bad. Looking forward to Game Frog on the 23rd. Leveling up quite a bit in AE. 16 hour a week training schedules are serious. Now playin SFEX3,just picked it up for 12 bucks, unlocking characters. Thinking if I should pre order Hori’s new stick or just get one now. Anybody gonna use Sanwa clear buttons?

Didn’t know Sanwa made clear buttons, I thought only seimitsus (what I put into my TE). Do you know the model number? Can’t wait to see you there buddy.

I did not know he didn’t give you your money back that is BS. I personally feel that if you are the only person running a tournament you shouldn’t be allowed to enter. Especially if you are over capacity and way behind schedule. The main thing that pissed me off about the TO was him doing runbacks/MM in marvel when he should have been running a tournament.

As far as TV lag goes I only played on CRT’s so I didn’t have that problem there was only one TV that looked like it might have lagged and I avoided it.

I don’t think I’d be going back either. I might consider it if it was ran at a Hotel/convention center. Somewhere with more space and air conditioning.

I remember Robin doing that raffle thing where Q won a copy of Super that he never got. Then when Q kept asking about it, instead of being like “I’m sorry” he placed the blame on a radio station then tried to make Q feel like an asshole for asking. “Well I guess if you REALLY want it I can buy you one…” for some shit Q won in HIS raffle. No one else seemed to care cause everyone knew Robin (I didn’t) but now this other shit with the money sucks too. Especially since I wanted to go play RyRy at some point but oh well.

They are instituting a system of much smaller pools, which I think will help make things faster.

Been saying this for over a month now. Glad to see other people are finally starting to agree.

G-Vegas ran fairly well, and we actually had quite a bit of good comp from Georgia and South Carolina there.
Only major fault was the A/C in the ballroom was busted. At least they sold drinks and the foyer had couches and drafts coming in.
I’ve been to 5 tournaments since CEO a month ago and the ONLY venue that had adequate A/C was the Charlotte tournament.
I hope to see a day in our scene when we can go to tournaments in the Summer and not sweat our asses off. At least before I’m old enough to collect Social Security.

I appreciate you guys for coming down to SC and attending G-Vegas. I’ve been talking with Brian and if the internet connection is good at your venue, I’ll be streaming the next RESE tournament in August. I even gave you guys a shout out on the stream

Hey guys.

If There’s something I regret, it’s that AE pool B got started that late (around 9).

I split the pools because I knew some people were going to be late (which they were) and most of NC was in pool B because they weren’t there when I started making brackets for A.

As far as setups, the vast majority of setups were crts for that very reason. Only tv I thought wasn’t good was the Sony, and I wasn’t aware of that until late. Setups started disappearing around 7pm, some mistakes were made with the tonamento software, and apparently I was the only person in the room able to mobilize matches at a quick pace. So whenever I had to do something else (play my matches in 1 game, give out prize money, deal with player concerns) the tourney slowed down. This is also my fault.

The thing with Q is long done. The radio station had a raffle. I announced it. They never paid up. I’ve offered to pony up the prize to settle the difference multiple times. Yet it’s still my fault.

Any event of this magnitude again were going to book a hotel. Last two Civil Wars had 50 people in the biggest tourney… Mvc3 had 98. It grew from 70 facebook rs vps to 140 in the last week, well after the point I could have switched venues.

When it was a smaller event I felt that having it the arcade with the games would be pretty fun, but that’s nit really worth the drawbacks of space and comfort.

I don’t give refunds to the tourney pots as a policy.

Some people show up a tourney and need to leave, I understand. But there’s no difference between leaving at 5 or 9 in this case.

I denied a refund for someone leaving at 5pm, and I denied it at 10pm.

At that point money is counted and locked in a safe.

If anyone is still salty, I’ll buy you some beers at evo or whenever I come down to NC.

There are tons of things I could have done better, a couple decisions that were unwise, but i don’t want to belabor you guys with my post mortem analysis.

I’m really grateful you guys make the effort to come up here and I am sorry if some experiences were less than ideal. I also didn’t want to be short with anyone about the refund issue, but I was rather swamped. If you would like to air any concerns, feel free to pm me.

Thanks to everyone for comming out from NC. i always enjoy seeing you guys, again i am sorry about the AC. the problem was not that it was busted it was that they didnt turn it on before we got there. once all the machines started running and everyone got in there it heated up fast and never could catch up.

I think it ran ok, but needs some improvements. that was my first time doing the software route and although it eliminated errors it really slowed things down. i want to get this to a two day event eventually and it will require a lot of work and trial and error before that can happen. we had over 120 people in attendance and 85 that played in tournaments and we where still done with all the majors by 9:30, i consider that a small win but we can do better.

Thanks again for coming NC you guys are always welcome in the upstate.

How hard is it to unlock the safe and get 20 bucks out of it? I just felt like with pool B starting so late and with players coming from out of state, there should have been a bit more understanding with them wanting to leave and giving money back if matches hadn’t started for them. Also for the record, atleast 2-3 of the TVs on the side bench were lagging. I know you were swamped and all that but that’s no excuse for treating players poorly on “policy”. You also brought up the point of Evo not giving refunds but EVO is a pay online to register tournament, you’re in vegas, there’s lots of other stuff to do there, probably some casual TVs to play on, panels, AC, stuff starts on time, etc etc.

Jos, the guy with the afro, played one match in Marvel, then got disqualified for no apparent reason even though he was standing right by the tournament organizers and had repeatedly asked if he was up. And then on top of that, he’s not refunded his money for AE? That’s really dick honestly. He drove three hours and got to play ONE match.

That better be one hell of a beer at evo.

Also on another note, we should run it back in Marvel at evo. Money match for 10 dollars in MVC3, lets go!

Haha. A beer in Vegas is like 8 bucks no joke!

Yeah, his situation kinda sucked with how everything went down.

Lol at Evo matches starting on time… Historically Evo is am even bigger clusterfuck.

Ill gladly rematch you, you would have had me if you got that dorm setup on me.

Yeah your team was good though. I really didn’t want to come at your Wesker because that meant there’d be Tron in my face but I couldn’t really do any snap back combos if I was just zoning. Figured I’d just try to brave it out and fight dark phoenix lol. I’ll look forward to it then. Need to play Ryry too to see how much better his Zero is haha

your boy FaceNC is here in Toronto. PLayed 3s with him for like 4 hours last night! shoutout to Commonsense!

Just because it’s ‘policy’ doesn’t make it right, it means it’s a garbage policy. It’s not like we left for no reason, we left because we had a long drive home and we saw a lot more waiting around (after waiting 8 hours for our pool to start) in the heat in our future before having to make a 3 hour drive home.

We paid $10 to enter a tournament, we never played 1 match - keeping the money makes no sense and you cannot justify it. The money is locked up in a safe? Well then we’ll wait here while you get the key. It’s not the $10, its the principal of the matter and the level of disrespect you showed towards us. I’m not going to argue about it anymore but it’ll be a cold day in hell before I go to another one of your tournaments.

EDIT: Pool B did not get started around 9, it was 10:00. I made sure to look at the time we left.

I read this a few times… I can say, with confidence, there is a difference between leaving at 5 and leaving at 9. ESPECIALLY if the pool hasn’t started.

Quite a bit of misdirection and excuses. ~I knew some ppl were going to be late, so I ran pool B at 10~ kind of logic is that?
