North Carolina Players XXIV: What's in your SF4 syllabus?

Hey what’s up guys. I already did a little introduction of myself in the Charlotte thread. Figure i’ll repost it here since i’ll mainly be participating in the NC players threads.

<begin slightly edited repost> The names Adrien. I live in Salisbury but frequent the Charlotte and Winston Salem area quite a bit.
I just turned 25 so i’m feeling a bit like a dinosaur. I can’t say that i’m the biggest Street Fighter fan since after MvC2 I went on to playing Tekken 5 and Soul Calibur 2 very competitively. Street Fighter 2 was always a staple of my childhood though and with HD Remix having been released it sent me on a nostalgia trip like no other. Kinda sad when the best way you remember each year of your life is by the games that come out.

HD Remix made me realize that of all the fighting game franchises, Street Fighter was my all time fave. Since I got HD Remix, i’ve rarely played anything else and am eagerly looking forward to SF4 and competing in as many tournaments in the area as possible. Meeting new people, hanging out and playing fighting games all night and all that jazz. So yeah. I’ll keep it short and simple. Just wanted to say hi and that I look forward to possibly meeting you guys someday…most likely sooner rather than later. </laziness>

So yeah…i’m really interested in what the fighting game community looks like around here now. I’ve been out of the loop for quite some time and never really checked out Shoryuken much as far as forums go.

SF4 tomorrow for me – Japan edition!!! PS3!!! Hori stick!!! Gen, Fei Long and of course my boy Bison!!! Muhahahahahahahahahahah!!!

Im really not trying to rub it in I promise

This is the first moment ive gotten away from the controller (other than piss breaks) since putting that GLORIOUS piece of software into my system. Fuck what you heard, this game is SEXY!! From the opening cinematic right into the fights themselves everything is just so clean, so crisp, so just damnit YUMMY! Although that pop song used for the intro (Exile is the group I think) gets a tad bit overused. Its the menu music, its the character select music (minus the lyrics), and its even used as a stage theme sometimes. Now one thing that I didnt know that might be insignificant to some of you but is the SHIT to me is that they have completely REMIXED old character themes. They have the normal stage music, but I noticed it while playing a rival match Ryu vs Sagat that the old SF2 themes are in. I thought it might have just been that particular match but when I started playing challenge mode I took note that while fighting Guile his old theme was playing, then I fought Cammy and it was the same. Needless to say thats AWESOME. At least to me. Now as for controls, I will say GET A GOOD STICK, my god I never believed it but that damned HORI is a piece of fucking SHIT man. I thought maybe my execution was off but I couldnt even do Shoryuken~EX Focus cancel~dash~Shinkuu Hado to save my life. No pads b/c its impossible to alter the config and still be able to FEASIBLY do Focus attacks and Ultras which require all 3 attacks. No whining, just get a stick. Bottom line. Other than that though, the game controls like a dream. Also watching match vids or viewing screenshots just dont do this game proper justice. Until you can sit down with it and SEE it for yourself and take notice of the little details put into the characters, the backgrounds, and the ENTIRE presentation, dont pass any judgement please. I will admit that I wasnt exactly impressed by the look of the game at first, I was right on the hater train saying that the animation looked stiff, and it looked very SFEX-ish. And I will admit that even now some things still look somewhat stiff (like Fuerte’s dash) but after playing it and seeing things like how Chun’s hands fan in her idle stance, how Sagat fully flips after a Tiger Upper, how Ken flips his hair when left standing, Viper’s ponytail, and Rufus’ belly physics with included treasure trail (you just NEED to see it haha) I will say that im riding this game’s jock hard. Now I just gotta get some playtime with people who know what they are doing so I dont feel like super scrub.

But you dont gotta take my word for it. Im just DeMo.

GET F’N HYPE PEOPLE!!!

back to SFIV

O.

when you get unglued from the game let me know whats good lol

So a stick is like super needed huh? Guess I might have to see if I can snag a TE stick from ebay or something. Unless someone wants to let me borrow a PS2 stick till they’re available for public again.

Sadly I have to unglue myself today. Going to Youngsville to check on that package and then gotta work.

And yes Jon, a stick is pretty much REQUIRED. Unless you are good with some funky cross finger play.

O.

Uh, how would it be hard to do Focus attacks on pad?
Also, how would it be hard to do Ultra attacks with a pad with 6 face buttons (like the SF4 pad)??? I do Meteors in SFEX3 just fine with my pad.

How is the SFEX series stiff? Especially SFEX3.
Yeah, the graphics are way outdated now, but at the time they weren’t too bad. Some moves like Skullomania’s Skull Tkatchev and Rosso’s supers animate VERY well even by today’s standards.

Touche. But still the debate will eventually boil down to an opinion of stick vs. pad. Which I have gone over to the stick side in recent years. The ONLY game(s) I play pad with are Tekken (b/c of molestor step) and SOMETIMES KoF. I wasnt thinking about the 6 button pads when I made my statement. I was thinking of the standard 360/PS3 controllers. With the default config your PPP & KKK buttons are placed on the L1/LB L2/LT buttons respectively. I just find it ridiculously difficult to do PRECISE movements like Cannon Spike with the thumb on my left hand, focus cancel by pressing TWO face buttons SIMULTANEOUSLY with the thumb on my right hand, dash with the left thumb, then bust out a complete super motion with the same left thumb while trying to hit a trigger on the left side of the controller with my pointer finger. Maybe im not fast enough, but I find it alot easier to do ALL of that without the use of the slowest digit on my hand. Now im not trying to turn this into a heated flame war, but I have found that playing on a stick has DRAMATICALLY increased my execution and win percentage in LOTS of games. Maybe you should try it.

You can bait that hook but I REFUSE to bite. Im sorry. Key Framed animation will NEVER be as fluid as hand drawn. Bottom line. /debate

I know, which is why I pointed out the SF4 pad because I was wondering if you had tried them out and had any opinion about how they felt because I haven’t tried them yet and I’m highly skeptical of their quality given Mad Catz’s dubious reputation.
I do think the default 360/DualShock controllers suck at playing SF just as much as anybody.

It’s so nice when people who don’t actually know me or my history at all (which is just about everyone here) try to make a personal assumption when the fact is, as I often have told many people, I used stick for 10 years in the arcades.
I STILL feel more comfortable with a pad. That doesn’t mean I have a grudge against sticks, I’ve played with a lot of good ones (the ones on the Marvel and 3S cabs at Mindboggle Charlotte I was fairly comfortable).

My point is not about me at all nor my preferences but the fact nobody can tell anybody else what feels more comfortable for them or what is ultimately the best to use. Everybody all will have their own preferences and can ultimately only choose for themselves, which is fair enough as long as they give every option a decent try.
If someone feels most comfortable and does okay w/ JPN sticks, US sticks, SF pad, Saturn pad, Dual Shock, Keyboard, DDR Pad or whatever the fuck, it’s not up to anyone to judge them, look down on them, or tell what they should use as long as they aren’t cheating with Turbo buttons, macros, programs, etc.

So SF4 is hand-drawn, now???

fight-pads, have 8 bottons?! why cant you just set them like Soul Cal. ?

Good sticks do make a huge difference. I can vouch also. My execution is a lot better on good stick then bad stick/pad.

Only game I prefer pad for is KOF.

Yo! Lucky’s Tournament 2/28.

http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=173035

Who or what is Luckys? I’ve been to greensboro on a number of occasions but don’t know what luckys is. It is just the name of the person running it or what? Never imagined greensboro having that much of a fighting game scene much less a video game scene at all.

Also…i’ve already heard of this tournament…but won’t it conflict with the second round of the gamestop tournament?

My god this has to be the LONGEST 12 hour work shift I have EVER done!!! I have Street Fighter IV all ready and waiting at home and im out here in the world saving lives. Gotta focus on work and think less about that damned game. But seeing as how im up here let me respond.

Good points. VERY GOOD POINTS INDEED. Understand and Understood. Well let me just say this then. IN MY PERSONAL OPINION, it would be more conducive to the cause to play this game on a stick rather than a pad.

No lol. Lets not misconstrue my statement. We were talking about SFEX3. Now I should have said a game to make the hand drawn comparison with, but I have lots of faith in your intelligence, so you know what I mean. Look at how janky and stiff games like KoF:MI and SFEX move against their hand drawn counterparts like KoF XI and 3S. There’s just no question.

Is it 7am yet?

O.

I mean honestly I can see why this game would be easier on a stick. With all the multibutton presses and shit, even on a fight pad, unless you’re really damn good at fat fingering the controller, that shit would be hard. Not to mention SF motions are notoriously easier to do on a stick.

Personally I don’t have a problem playing games on a pad till it gets to forcing me to press multiple buttons at the same time. If GG required a manual FRC I’d have quit pad a long time ago.

Also I like the new-ish Ludacris album. You guys listened to it yet?

Lucky’s is a card shop in Greensboro, and also the owner’s name. I knew him from 2001 or so and then he opened his store approximately 3 years ago, and he’s let us run tournaments there ever since.

Don’t worry about it being a card shop, it’s no BS setup. He gives us the space that we need and is extremely accommodating. We usually have 6 large CRTS lined up and then a few smaller one’s if needed. Greensboro itself doesn’t have much of a big scene (6 players?), but everyone is mostly cool with everyone else across the state, and a good bit of us travel to the different spots. The big gatherings are usually Raleigh and Fayetteville, with the tournaments in Greensboro. It’s good shit; you’d probably have fun.
