Norcal Super Turbo thread

Game center is a nice surprise. I wrote a little more about it here

Ultracombo kept telling us how awesome Myung (the owner) is and I have to agree with him.

People within 45 mins drive of san mateo should definitely go there to check it out.

When I’m back after my trip I’ll bring the ST board to gc again.

Myung asked me to leave the ST board there so he can put it in the Egret3 cab and let people play for $0.10 cents per game. I’m seriously considering it.

I guess it’s hard to get people out every week or even once a month.

But the parking situation there is pretty good (street parking + sunday all day or M-S after 6pm free parking in caltrain station)
Lots of restaurants within walking distance in downtown san mateo.

We should gather 10+ people to go play every 2-3 months and have some fun.

I’m at game center every Sunday and some Thursdays, and actually the owner helped me out with gathering some stuff for a supergun I’m building. Having him throw ST in a cab would be pretty awesome. Also thirding that he’s really awesome and super helpful.

[S]Who is going to drom for st, is there a number of people known that are going? I’m probably not gunna go unless I get a ride and yall petition for me to do ST commentary since I’m not streaming it. Regardless of all this, I’m kind of not interested in going honestly, I could use that money getting to gamecenter since that seems like its where its at for ST.[/S]

Actually nevermind, I’ve lost all interest in going. See all you st peeps at gamecenter in the future![S]
[/S]

Honestly, there’s not a lot of support for ST these days, as many of you guys hanging out here already know.
I think having a standard spot to play is INTEGRAL to keep a movement going.
Game Center seems like a fairly centralized location for the ST players out there. SouthTown Arcade seems a bit far for some of you South Bay guys, although Fudd and Vestax might complain a little.

If Myung is willing to keep the ST cab on, I say you should do it. It doesn’t do much if we don’t use it, but I’ll it’s yours so I’ll let you decide.

It’s definitely hard to get people out to keep playing SF2X (haha) in the face of all the other fighting games out there. I’ve played the game for years, and still can’t commit to playing each week. Maybe once a month, if anything. Speaking of which…

I’m most likely going to Fairfield this Friday to play some KoF2002UM, and I usually get some Super Turbo matches in with Fudd, Vernes and Spider Dan/ Tyram sometimes. If anyone else is willing to go the distance, we can get some games going.

Oh, and we should all hit the Ranbats at SouthTown this Sunday!
DON’T. GET. RUSHED. DOWN.

Holler!

I was actually thinking of going home this weekend, so I guess it’s gonna happen.

San Mateo does seem far, but if we did get a nice, big ST meeting going on once a month or so, I would definitely try my best to make it. Especially if the setup is nice.

I wouldn’t mind hitting up the SouthTown ranbat, alas I’m pretty busy and I tend to barely even get anything done on the weekends I go to Fairfield.

how was dromstruction

You didn’t miss much

Cool…

Anyways can’t make it to this southtown, ill be partying and drunk as shit.

Hey fudd if you roll thru to gamecenter hit my brother up, maybe we can make it. Ummm I’m throwing a gathering this weekend but no st(I play a lot of AE now) due to the fact south town is doing one. I’m going to the next south town for sure. I didn’t realize they were doing old school day this weekend and know I’m kinda committed to having a gathering. I think st scene is fine now a days, games at game center, and at south town. So I don’t think im gonna do any more st gatherings to detract from said events

I can’t go to STA ranbat today,I have some family issues to take care of.

went to sta for a few matches before i had to go to work. ggs to brian and two others. did anyone else go?

Shinobi! Long time no see, brother.

I have a couple points here, so please bear with me.
I’d have to disagree that the SF2 scene is fine.
Amidst there being places where we CAN play, there isn’t really a cohesiveness to the scene for the players that DO want to play locally. Definitely not a ton of participation out there.

So I went to the Ranbat at Southtown last Sunday and was talking to Art (one of the owners) about the SF2 community. We brought topics like how fragmented the SF2 community is, and participation as a whole.

I think it’s awesome that as players, we have the opportunity to voice our interests to the arcade operators for our best experiences, and in turn, they can choose to accomodate us as best as possible.

We’ve been given the opportunity to have things like head-to-head cabinet play, authentic japanese parts, and even streaming big events onto the internet. Some players across the country would kill to have this available to them.

I think that an occasion like a monthly Ranbat is the most opportune time to get together and just wile the fuck out while we’re beating eachother senseless in Street Fighter.

This past Sunday, there were less than 4 people in attendance, not enough entrants for ST to even hold a Round Robin tourney…

CVS2 and 3S got more entrants, and CVS even got stream time…

We’ve got some pretty cool shit happening at our request, and we shouldn’t waste the opportunity to do this. Let’s get together and get some matches going!

It’s only once a month, guys!

Prob going to the next south town old school event. I mean I just have to hop on bart and I’m there. Everyone should support south town.

I’ve been trying to learn ST lately, but given my schedule and how busy I am in general it’s impossible for me to get up to southtown on Sundays, and most other times don’t really look great either (I’m in the south bay). That said, I’ve been working on a supergun so that hopefully more ST/old games (I’m thinking about grabbing vsav and A2) can be ran at tournaments and events in the area. I’m hoping something ends up happening with getting ST at gamecenter, I go there about once a week so it’d be great to be able to actually learn from soem people there.

Sup yall!

Trying to get more people to go to the Super Turbo Ranbat this Sunday, Nov 27.
I’ve contacted tons of people! Let’s try to make it if you’re free.

Super Turbo… Fundamentals are good for you, baby!

Man I feel so bad. I would go but I have work tomorrow, I don’t have time, cause tourneys are always late and I would need a ride back so I can get to work on time. I couldn’t go the last ranbat cause I didn’t have money. now I can’t go cause I’m busy making money. This is so lame.

Regarding the deadness of the ST community in norcal, I’ve kinda given up, no one seems to care and eveyrone who does is scattered, it would take a lot of commitment from us to get something going. I would love to try do something at gamecenter, but that’s just out of selfishness, since I’m so close. Guess I’m part of the problem too. If I could drive I’d be totally down for more events, but as of now it’s hard for me to get around.

We have guys all the way up in fairfield, some people in modesto, and the peninsula, the east bay, we are all over the place man.

I think it’s hard for people to commit when there’s nothing to look forward to. If someone was to set up ST events frequently, with decent turnout, it would be easier for players to get motivated, but as of now it’s so hard when it seems like there is nothing for this game in norcal, no interest or events. I know there are a lot of norcal heads playing ST, but they’re all on GGPO, look at this thread, 4 pages, it’s been here for months.

There is STA, but the location is bad cause it’s packed, so parking sucks, and it’s a small place, but it has h2h setups on japanese sticks and cabs during the weekend, which is fantastic. I was going to try to get something going for ST at gamecenter, but papasi’s supergun broke. I think the owner is totally down for putting a board in his Egret II cab, we’ve done it before, but it’s only one cab, which I honestly don’t mind that much, of course it’s not ideal like a supergun or H2H. Gamecenter is much roomier, the parking is better, and I’d say it’s cheaper, 7$ for a wristband, h2h at STA was 50 centers per play last I checked.

Basically nothing is really set in stone, it’s hard to get things going with no cash and now no time, if anyone wants get something going for ST I’ll try my hardest to help. I have a CRT and a PS2 stick papasi loaned me, and I plan to get a license when I turn 18 in March.

I can try to do get something going but if no one cares, no one shows up to anything (I am guilty as well as I didn’t go to the last ranbat), then I’d rather not waste my time. Sometimes I feel like I am talking to myself, cause it seems like there is really nothing for this game in norcal. It makes me very, very sad.

EDIT: I haven’t been on SRK or GGPO much lately, so if anything has gone down I don’t know about it. If anything is happening please post it or pm me pretty pleeeease.

Sup bro.
I hear you. We all gotta make a living some how. Handle that business.

I don’t know, bro. SouthTown is already hosting something that’s happening once a month. I’ve talked to Art, and all he needs is bodies to enter the door once a month. I don’t think it’s a lot to ask. I know we’re all scattered, though.

As for motivation, that’s up to the players in the community. We all understand that the game is 20 years old and there aren’t a lot of new events happening for this game. The SF2 community is small (even world wide, I’d say), but the players that are here in the Bay Area are pretty damn good.

As for turnout, the only ones who can control that are ourselves.

Do I really have to get into my “old man” tone and say shit like, “Back in my day, we travelled uphill both ways in the snow to get to 711 to play Street Fighter 2, and smashed nickels into quarters to play!”

My point is that we already have something already available. Why don’t we use it?
It’s one day a month, and if we can work out logistics with the arcade owners if we need to.

STA being too small and there being no parking is a problem, especially if more people began to show up. The place would be super cramped, if you managed to find parking. People really ought to carpool if they can, or hell even take public transit, it’s a short walk from the bart station.

SJSU has a nice setup as well, if it wasn’t for those damn p360s. Otherwise it’s a good place, not many people are in that arcade so there would be more room, plus I think they have tables and sell food there so staying for a long amount of time wouldn’t be a problem. Battosai told me he was gonna talk to the owner or whoever to switch the sticks, so hopefully that pans out, honestly it could be almost anything and it would be much better, They’ll probably put comps, WICOs maybe, or the LS56, who knows.

But anyways that’s what I’m saying, if shit isn’t convenient for people I don’t think they’d be down, because there is nothing to look forward to, nothing to keep us motivated. No one wants to go to the ends of the earth to play ST with only 3 people. Now I’m not saying we should all abandon STA cause it’s not ideal, I’m just saying we should try to set things up in more places, just to give people options, and so we can set stuff up at our own convenience. I think gamecenter is the best place if we get the hardware, we could do an event when there are no other tourneys going on, so there would be plenty of room, we could have the nice big 32 inch CRT to ourselves, parking wouldn’t be an issue, and we could set it up whenever we wanted, We just gotta talk to the owner Myung. All we really need is a supergun and interest, and I think getting people interested is the hard part, which I why I’m kinda giving. No one seems to give a fuck. I don’t sense any enthusiasm, it’s just “oh there’s ST, cool whatever I’ll play”, the only time a decent amount of people turn up is NCR cause it’s a major, which I find really lame. Like you said ST is an old game, there won’t be that many players but I think there are enough to get something going and to get more people interested, but you have to be hardcore committed to play this game, that’s just the way it is. If people don’t give a shit cause they can just play on GGPO then what can you do. If GGPO is good enough for everyone then that says everything about the ST scene (or lack thereof) in this region.

Basically if you wanna play ST, you’ll probably have to put up with shit like finding parking, driving far and paying for gas, and if that’s really too much for people then there’s no way anything for ST can happen. And the lack of interest just propogates itself, cause less comp is just less motivation.

I think if events happened more frequently, with more turnout, more people would wanna put up with the long driving and whatnot to play the game. You can’t feed an addiction with no competition! If you’re obsessed with this game like I once was, you always wanna play people, and events happening only once a month won’t cut it for people like me, the people who will frequent these events. I know doing things twice a month is too frequent for long travel, which is why we should to get stuff set up as much as possible, maybe cycle through weekends, like this weekend we play at SJSU, then next weekend STA, then gamecenter, etc.

I think concord is a good location for everyone? Once a month? I really need to start playing st again all this sf4 bullshit I’ve been playing lately is wearing on my last nerve.

I went to four different tournaments in June in Norcal, Socal, Chicago and (fuck me for going) Tennessee. If people really want to play offline ST, they’ll find a means. If not, all they’ll find is excuses.

I went to all those tournaments to have some fun because I knew I was gonna be busy with school later in the year. But I’m still on GGPO and playing locally even when I shouldn’t be. STA’s distance isn’t the problem for me, but the fact that it takes time to travel that distance. I’m already a huge procrastinator and I’ve got an essay due on Tuesday and Friday; final version of a short story due Wednesday; non-fiction article due tomorrow; and final exams to study for next week.

Concord has always been a good, central location. If you’d be down to hold sessions about once a month, I’d probably make it every time.
