NOOB to arcade style controls, need some advice

Super : the thread I was looking for. I know how to start when I get my stick. Thanks guys.

I just got my fs3. first time on a stick in about 5 years, so i have no clue what im doing. this is my training regimen. i am using abel as my main:

in training mode:

50 each- rekkas, rolls, wheel kicks, tornado throws, supers and ultras

in trials:

all of normal trials, can only get to hard trial 2

arcade mode:

beat it from easiest and almost beat on medium.

I have tried playing player matches online, and i suck sooooo bad! I think its because i get really nervous and i cannot pull off any combos. changing from pad to stick is so difficult.

I’ve got some problems…I’ve noticed that I can’t for the life of me keep the stick in neutral motion while fighting an opponent. I am only concerned about this because some of my important attacks are done in neutral.

For example when I play third strike as Ibuki when I try to punish someone quickly I immediately hit F +MK which is her overhead when I’m trying to do Neutral Mk -> HCB punch for raida. I can do this consistently in training mode fine, but during a match I just always mess this up, and it’s hurting my game severely.

I believe I use the pen style when holding the joystick, btw. My hands always like to push back or forward…:crybaby:

Also, same problem with Melty Blood. I have problems doing some BnBs consistently because of my inability to go into neutral stance that well. In this game it isn’t as a problem for me cuz the pace of the game is faster so for some reason I am able to do the BnBs fine for the most part…with 3s this isn’t the case at all, though.

I’ve been getting frustrated since my execution is hurting my game even though I know what to do…

sorry for hijack.

Damn this thread actually helped me with holding my stick… thx

I too have just picked up a new TE stick:) SFIV has just gotten a whole lot more fun.

For the six button layout of SF style games I have always used a single finger for both the kick and punch, with the kick being activated by the knuckle of finger, and the punch pressed by the finger tip.

Index, Middle, Ring
:lp: :mp: :hp: <FINGER TIP>
:lk: :mk: :hk: <FIRST KNUCKLE>

When pressing a kick button, I have to turn my finger tips upwards to avoid accidentally pressing the punch button at the same time. After repeated play, this is quite hard on the hands and my wrists in particular will start to hurt. I’ve only had the stick a few days, so I’m hoping that I’ll harden up.

I had always just assumed that this was the ā€˜correct’ way, so to find out from this thread that this isn’t how the pros do it, or anyone else for that matter is a bit of a surprise. Surely for SFIV this is the best way to initiate the two button presses for holds, focus and (most importantly) taunts.

Why would it be the best? I can’t see how that would give you an advantage. The only thing I can see that being good for is TAP.

Very helpful thread, just got my first stick as well
