Can you give some examples?
I’m also a noob to arcade controls, and I think playing other games with a stick would help a lot with getting comfortable with it.

If you have a 360, download Castlevania-Symphony of the Night. Awesome platform/RPG made for pad-type controls i.e. perfect for a stick. It’s a HUGE game, and has some special spells you can buy that has SF-like moves to execute. One of the best games on the Playstation 1.
XBLA has a big range of oldschool arcade games like Gauntlet or Golden Axe that were made for 80’s arcades, or the R-type remix, they’d be great to control with a real stick.
Also try some of the fast shooter games like Ikaruga, RezHD or other stuff from XBLive Arcade. They’ll teach you quick reflexes and not thinking about moving the stick around, just doing it instinctly. Playing modern FPS games like Gears of War 2 with a fightstick is hopeless I’d think, since you need two analog sticks, usually one to move around, and the other to move the camera.
Many JRPGs could work fine too, like Lost Odyssey. There are some pretty frantic games like Ninety-Nine Knights where you plow into hundreds of soldiers/monsters and do fast combo moves to kill them as quick as possible. I dunno…whatever you prefer that doesn’t need 2 analog sticks to work.
If you own a PS3, I’m not familiar with their download service, but I’m sure there’s some arcade games there aswell. Megaman 9 should be available for both systems. It’s a great agility/fast reaction platform game (also a very hard one though).
Thanks man. I forgot to mention I’m playing on a PS3 but some of those games you mentioned are at the PS store anyway.
I just bought Castlevania SotN. I still have my NES and play the old Castlevania games every now and then so this is right up my alley.
You won’t regret that purchase… it’s one of the best games around (I own multiple copies of it [different systems] because of how good it is). Hitting up the PSN is a good thing to do… also… buy yoself some of those game collections… y’know… Capcom Classics, Namco Museum… stuff like that. Great games… and great for precision training with a stick.
If you are on xbox, get Ikaruga.
And get ready for the hardest shooter ever made by man or god.
Took me two months to beat it on Normal, I will never EVER be able to beat it on hard.
Here is a video to blow your mind:

Thanks alot for this thread, I just switched my playing style to pointer-lp,middle mp, ring-hp, thumb- lk and pointer-thumb for FA
I am absolutely dominating now that I made the switch. This thread is exactly what I was looking for. I actually started a very similar thread a couple weeks back, but it didn’t take off like this one. Thanks OP!
Anyone ever tried to play the modern Ninja Gaiden games on an arcade stick? (It’s worth noting that some high end sticks have special switches to make the stick register as the right analog stick which does make those sticks a bit more versatile.)
No, but I am going try getting a PS2 converter to use my saturn arcade stick for a game called Nightshade. I’m making S-Rank speedruns for it (), and I’ve always want to try and see what my execution would be like with the stick on a game like that. Should be interesting…
BTW, you just reminded me, my friends left their copy of NG over my house for the longest, but I have yet to play it…:wonder:
Honestly playing games built for an analog stick on microswitches does not work out well at all.
I’m not disputing the validity of this, but I am curious what is the difference between the two aside from how they are manipulated? I have always wondered about this but could never find anything to answer that question.
Nop, because I use both analog sticks at the same time and sometimes gotta hit up the pad quickly to use an item. PS3 games I’ve played around with my stick besides fighters are: LBP (some stages require precise platforming), Burnout Paradise and SOLDNER-X. I’m sure there are several others you can try, such as the highly recommended Castlevania: SotN and Megaman 9.
Good luck!
P.S: Am I the only one who moves the thumb around not only to hit :lk: but also :mk:? I was paying attention while playing, and I can’t seem to move my middle finger down from :mp: to :mk: before I move my thumb right from :lk: to :mk: Has anyone else tried it?
I tried that method but I find moving my middle finger down works better for me. Moving my thumb was too much of a strain/stretch for me
I’m having some trouble with focus attacks, what is everyone using for FA:
One is “analog”, the other is digital. One recognizes “tiers” of inputs based on how much you move it to the edge, the other is either on or off.
Yeah, it’s AWFULL playing a game designed for analog with a digital stick. A stick is designed for 8 direction, hit them or not. Analog is built for… let’s just say 360 directions and for at least 4-5 stages of input (nothing, slow, medium, fast movement).
That said, I use what could be called a “modified wineglass grip”. I hold the stick between my index and middle finger, just like I hold a real wineglass. Works really good for me. And in SF the classic ring on lp, mid on mp, ring on hp setup. Feels natural for me. GG is the classic four finger setup with small finger being hard slash.
@parabellum: I think you missed the true incredible

Noth require such a quick brain and precise hands :bgrin:
Your entire middle finger.
Just lift up your thumb, index, and ring, and slam it on there.
That being said, if you can’t do that, thumb and index would work, but I think laying down the middle finger flat is going to be faster than moving your palm to the side to hit :mp:+:mk:.
Thats a good point drake, but laying down the middle finger may not be precise enough, is that your personal technique?
My thoughts are the middle finger and thumb would be most efficient as you can be precise and at the same time you can get your hand back in place for a quick ultra after a cancel
Pointer finger and thumb would be by far the most precise, but you have to take your hand away from your normal placement and that may throw your immediate Ultra off.
More thoughts and observations would be much appreciated!
Moving your thumb inward instead of moving your palm is probably going to give you hand cramps or some other RSI.
It’s not a very stable or comfortable position.
If you use your middle finger, you just lay it flat, come up (“rebound”), PPP/KKK. If you use your index and thumb, tap, come up/left/down-left, PPP/KKK. Just takes practice.
little hand dexterity never hurt nobody.
but- if you can make it work, whatever gets the job done. I’m not an anatomist.
This is a great thread! just got my madcatz SE stick today. ( will mod after parts come from lizard lick w/e they ship) The wineglass grip is definitely the best and it just came out natural really. Now im just practicing Hadukens (i play ryu) and other simple attacks until i can just preform them without thinking.
Practice, I’m sorry but I’ll telling you, practice.
Get used to it and take your time. Take it as a step by step process.
Read, study, and try it out.
Test out on the things on the guides.
