As much as I would like to see it, it would be in vain for this site. SRK is a young man’s site. I seriously doubt the SF4 kids would even know how to appreciate what they would be witnessing.
Good looking out posting those vids though Schaeffer.

As I said in the Hyper Fighting thread, these OG players were imo, the greatest. If you accumilate their reaction time, their footsie games, and their knowledge of spacing and zoning…its absolutely unrivaled.
Players today play with too much of a “rush that shit down” mentality, and this has detracted in their gameplay of footsies and such, something that I feel has been watered down with current SF players.
However, I would love to see a Exhibition Match in Hyper Fighting or something, with guys like Tomo, Jeff, Wats, etc, etc. That would 100% own, yes they are not their early 90’s counterparts, but it would still be crazy nonetheless.
I loled at Jeff’s statements of him going to the bathroom and 20 seconds later, his character is still on block against Wats Bison in CE. Hahaha, that’s just ridiculous, however for Tomo to own up Bison in CE with Guile, but more importantly Ryu to me is just unbelievable. I swear…just one connected poke or scissor with Dictator in that game and you die, period.
Also, I’ve never seen the strategical aspect of HF. Blanka in the form that Jeff took it too. I would absolutely love to see at least some video of that in action, so I can get more of an understanding of just how powerful it is.
Great stuff, this imo, is the greatest thread at srk.com. Next, I would love to see a Tomo+Wats+Jeff get together interview, with all of three of them speaking about the tournaments, competition, their strategical gameplays of the past, and how they personally would have felt how the US would have done had they of gone up against Japan’s best at the time (Imo, USA would of taken it). That to me would be the Golden Interview.
I use to play SFII at Family Fun Arcade in Granada Hills, CA and I would always see tournament results for SF2 and Tomo would always be placing 1st and I remember seeing Mike Watson’s name up there a couple of times. I never entered a tournament, let alone saw a tournament take place since around that time I was in 10th grade and would have to bum rides off friends to get to the arcade. They had a street fighter crew at my school called Zen and had a bunch of great players. I would always hearabout this legendary Tomo guy and how he could dragon punch any strike an opponent threw.
Fast forward 15 years, My accquaintances knew Tomo and I met him about 4 or 5 years ago out in the San Gabriel Valley, CA. When they introduced me to him, I was like “TOMO?!?!?! TOMO OHIRA?!?!” and he smiled and acknowledge that was him. I asked him if he still plays SF, and he said he quit when gameplay got to ridiculous with silly moves and characters.
of course this is the sf thread but i understand the logic of silly extra shit and characters. One of the reasons I stopped playing GGXX series and others as well.
I once stated before what revision was my fav of all the fighter series I played. Then again if I were to post it again I would get.
“Cool Story, Bro”:lame:
Wow, there’s plenty of players in SoCal who I’m sure would be honored to give you a chance to play around on sf4. You’re a street fighter legend for god’s sake!
Sup Jeff, remember when my brother and I challenged you to SFAE at Family Fun after you beat Daigo? It was a lot of fun and cool to play against Gerald Abraham, Watson and yourself like 5 years ago. I still want to play against Tomo before I quit for good. Awesome historical info on the Golden Era of SF2.
Tomo Ohira > Daigo
Ditto. Much thanks to Jeff Schaefer. Those videos were fantastic. Really fascinating hearing the history.
Where!
When we playing! LOL
I just want to see it!
SF4? Dang. Maybe my little brother MIKE will take me.
I am going to see him next sat.
You should play Sagat like u did in HF

Just watched all your vids Jeff. Awesome stories about the golden years of SF. I got mad respect for you guys who took original SF2 to its fullest level. I especially liked your videos on your insights into the game and your strategies.
BTW I was talkin’ to Graham Wolfe several months ago and he said the same thing about Thomas Osaki and Tomo never landing on a fireball EVER.
peace
I was on the receiving end of this once, and thought it was the gayest thing ever. Basically you’re driven to the corner and blanka is like a character length away jumping up and down with rh and since it has like no hit box you can’t really AA it. I had no idea Schaeffer was the one who came up with it though, the person i played against didn’t have as much of a mixup with the throw and ball in the corner, all he did was j.rh or sweep as a poke to try and catch me standing, and that was hard enough to get around lol.
Check out Decoys Blanka tutorial vids from the main techniques:

This is the best Blank - Ryu match caught on tape, the Ryu is too good to be kept in the corner, but you see all the component techniques like c.HP trade thru fireball etc… even the awsome ‘Neck Breaker’ from Decoys vids

Great videos Jeff. Did you come to Family Fun just for tournaments or did you play there on the weekends for practice/fun? You look familiar, and I think I’ve seen you at FFA, even though you are from OC.
Here is a tournament ST match of Thomas Osaki (Dictator) vs Alex Valle (ryu) from Evo 2K2

I remember turning around after beating someone on a casual game and seeing Thomas shaking Alex’s had after beating his ryu.
Did you ever end up getting a chance to play? If so, what did you think of it?
Not yet
No plans to see it yet. I think it would be “fun” to play casually, but for tournament play, its another bullshit Marvel VS Capcom type game.
You make 1 tiny mistake, or the “percentage guessing” is correct, you could lose 40%.
That takes the chess aspect out of it a great deal. Superior distance/zoning is not awarded in this type of game because of the “juggling” and huge combos that can be awarded from 1 normal hit.
Of course, this is going to be a hated statement and boo’d, but its true.
In the old games, you play your zone game/distance, and the other guy has skill, he will hit you with a normal attack.
For example, Guile sticks out forward, Ryu trips it, then gets better position.
New games, Guile sticks out forward, you could eat 40% and way worse position.
The thing is, sticking out forward is NOT a mistake, its strategy. Of course.
Otherwise, you could argue the other character could just walk toward you into they throw you, over and over, you HAVE to stick out something.
These new games, you try and keep somebody back, with normal strategy, you risk losing the entire round, or at least 30-40%, for using a move YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO USE.
Hard to explain, do you understand where I am coming from?
Also, notice these new style champions are more “combo masters” than strategy and zoning masters. Marvel VS Capcom syndrome.
Its just a different style of play and different way to win the game.
And no matter what, I still don’t like Super Turbo. Same reason…
Of…you want to poke at balrog? Don’t stick out anything…you could lose 50%.
That is what Tomo meant when he said it got “too crazy”.
You take away the chess, and you introduce “percentage guessing” for massive damage, and you take away control. On these new games, when you “think” your on control, its an illusion, because you could get owned at any second.
old game, you can effectively “lock it up/lock them down” with a good zoning and reflex strategy/skill.
I hope I made my case. Of course, I am in the minority, but take it for what it is.
the chess factor has become ever more present IMO. Instead of losing 10-20% off a “little” mistake, its now become half life in most games and a free setup. So the accuracy of zoning and spacing is amplified due to the huge damage output thats present in the “newer” games. Who’s going to fuck their zone up when they will possibly die for it? it makes you player harder and smarter.
From the beginning every player has focused on making as few mistakes as possible if any @ all. If you don’t make a mistake, you won’t get hit.
just my 2 cents. Loved the insight on the old school scene. It would be nice to see tomo @ his prime scraping people left and right. Can’t wait to see more vids!
uh, in st you could lose a SHIT ton of life if you made a mistake, infact you die even faster than in 4. all it tkaes is one fuckup and you can get dizzied into death
edit: ah you don’t like st, and probably not hyperfighting. ok.
Yeah I wasn’t thinking tournament play. I agree losing 40% is bullshit but the arguement that guile was supposed to stick out forward id clearly wrong, he got punished for it in both examples.
thanks
