lol@video. really nice of you to post this. so fucking funny. even though there is some bitter history at this vid, i can still laugh at the damn gi joe ads. WHATS TOUGHER THAN A SF? a street fighters mother?? lol at that corny ass joke. anyways, seriously, tomo was on another level when sf2, sf2ce, and sfhf was out.

Hey guys, sorry I haven’t had time to encode the videos. I’ve been pretty hammered with work and yesterday was one of my first days off in a while. This thread has been an interesting read. I used to play SF2 WW/CE back in the day but because Im Australian based I never heard of any of these guys. I remember seeing it for the first time and thinking “Who the hell is this guy? Just another flavour of the month top player?”. Guess not

I have a question since we are on the subject of old school players. Did players back then play for prizes and cash back then as they do now or were they like the Japaneses who mostly play for free?

Damn. Brings back some old memories. Who was it that went to the Chicago, Midwest Nationals at Super Just Games back in…I think 1994 for Super? I remember Tomo could not make it, but 2 of his pals came, and 1 of them took the win, walking away with a Sega CD (lol) amongst other various prizes.

I ended up dropping them off at the airport due to them not having a ride lol.

Anyhow, any of you guys one of those 2 people?

damn, this takes me way way back. SF2WW, CE and HF where the first games (fighters, wasnt even into snk back then, till SSII changed all that) i ever mastered back in the days. i gotta say my throw game and zoning skillz along with my timing where deadly back in those days. though i rarely did bigger combos then 2 in 1s used to fucking own. later games changed my playstyle into a more daigo like player for some reason. great way of saying it btw. now my combo skillz and execution skillz in combos got crazy. but my throw game and zoning skillz aint as good as back in the 91-93 days. funny you mentioned it, as the play styles really changed. today is more show, back then it was more about every single hit you could get in. i wish i had my oldschool skillz with todayz combo executing skillz. fucking knew when to use every normal in any situation.

p.s. :shake: 93 the scene started dying. 95 or 96 it was already pretty much killed here. europes got it bad yall.

Undoubtedly the greatest Street Fighter player the US ever produced, Tomo Ohira, is almost fergoten by the SF scene today. Tomo Ohira was the Daigo of his day, a world famous player during the height of Street Fighter’s ‘Golden Era’. All the way back in 93, well before we had even heard of the internet, even the small SF scene in my English home town knew abt Tomo. I still remember first reading the interview with him in the back of the GamePro SF2: Hyperfighting guidebook.

In todays thriving competetive SF scene, with its huge online community, world tournaments and plentiful video footage, its a great shame that western SF’s Golden Era and its greatest ever player, Tomo, are so little known.

What is needed more than anything else is footage of Tomo and other great players at the pinacle of the Hyperfighting scene. This was the absolute zenith of oldschool StreetFighter skillz. Hyperfighting at its peak was as thrilling as todays Japanese ST scene. Fast and tactical, with many fergoten abt beast like Shoto killing TAP Rog, Vert Ball Blanka & Low Lariat Geif all up there battling with the trad top tier of Ryu, Guile and Sagat. And in a time before Supers, Hyperfighting was the highpoint of oldschool combo skill, with amazing, high damage, re-dizzy & ‘CPS1 Chain’ combos the likes of which are rarely seen in super_move focused ST.
To the olsschool players out there harbouring these nuggets on dusty VHS tapes under thier beds, please share it with the community.

It would also be cool if SRK did an interview with Tomo and other great players like Jeff Schaefer (who’s recent Hyper SF2 comback challenge against Daigo was a great missed opportunity for a history lesson in Oldschool skills) or invited them to make a guest appearance at Evo, giving out the prizes.

I was at Circus Circus in Las Vegas for New Years. Circus Circus was the hotspot for SF2 in Vegas back then. Their machine was a 50inch screen with seats. Tomo happened to be there as well…I knew him from the worlds finest tournaments.

Anyway, we alternated rounds playing as Guile and owned the machine all night. At least 100 wins in a row. There were at least 30 people watching at all times and some had video cameras. SF was huge back then. I know one guy was there recording us for at least an hour. I was hoping for the video to show up by now
