No backwards compatibility for 2d fighters on the XBOX 360

Not enough information to tell, there are two milestones worth noting IMO:

  1. when the initial problems with the xbox 360 are worked out, power supply, scratched discs, etc…

  2. when enough people actually have a 360 to be able to make any BC worthwhile (i am guessing end 1Q 2006)

Pre-release there was little reason to concentrate on BC at all, and until those two issues are met the BC updates we see are probably not represenative of what can be expected. They could update at 7 titles per month for the next year, or they could get 100 titles per month added, I don’t see any indication one way or another.

Obviously some promised features do not happen, some are underdelivered, and some are delvered entirely. And again, I don’t see where there is evidence in THIS case to say which one this is.

The only thing we can be sure of is that it’s not wise to dump your xbox before verifying that your games work 100% on 360. That doesn’t nessecarily mean when it’s on the list either, but after it’s been tested and such by the players.

Just keep your damned Xbox.

It is a disgrace…

Having no backwards compatibility for 2D fighters is a total disgrace and a slap in the face for 2D fighters. Its well known that there are online 2D fighters for the xbox such as snk vs. capcom: chaos. Its competition for us and money for Microsoft. Hopefully someday Microsoft will see the light and decide to do what is right in the world, and take care of business. That being making the xbox 2D fighter games backwards compatible.

Why should they? 2D fighters don’t sell anyways…

Yeah, kill me for what I said. But fact is fact. 2D fighters are selling HORRIBLE in America. And trust me, I mean HORRIBLE (KOF games can’t even reach 10K, sad). What IS stupid, though, is that some really unpopular, crappy games are backwards compatible, and some pretty popular ones are not. Oh well, life isn’t fair.

If you want 2D fighters, don’t buy a 360. End of story. Name me one thing the 360 can do for 2D fighters (at elast the ones you guys like) that the original Xbox, PS2, hell, even the DC, can’t do. 2D fighters are so niche it’s crazy. Even with Xbox Live compatibility, they still sell like shit. Guess all we can do is A: Move to Japan or B: Start playing 3D fighters.

I thought bondspy was being sarcastic… ?

I respect that people have strong and varied opinions. It seems logical enough that if you want to play 3s/xbox or mvc2/xbox, you’ve got to keep your xbox for now. If you’re freakin’ out, keep your xbox. The x360 is a new device, and the Backwards Compatibility is meant to be a bonus feature, not the defining factor on System Greatness.

It also seems logical that I think I’m the only one here who’s actually dealt with the application compatibility team and had to meet their standards. It’s completely logical that something that only 2% of the device installed base bought (MvC2 hit about that mark, I think) might fall off the radar. It’s also completely true that I’ve had the app compat team ride my ass about a 2004-only application that only 0.000025% of the XP user base installed. [And they used undocumented unsupported private functionality vs the actual doc’d method.] So while I’ve got nothing to do with the X360 app compat team… history has told me that where they can make something backwards compatible, the app compat team makes you.

As regards 2d vs 3d, there’s poor suckers like me who have ‘simulator sickness’. It’s not nearly as bad with the new 3d games, but normally I just get headaches playing 3d games. So I might get an x360 so that a) I can play mvc2 and b) peeps who visit for parties can play whatever 3d madness. I’m probably a minority of one, but: relevant example.

I didn’t mean to start more jihads by pointing out the new updates they’ve made in the two weeks since the console shipped. I personally found the list interesting, and mean to continue tracking it, and was trying to be helpful. Please do understand that for almost everyone involved in any given project, people are pretty wiped out by the time you actually get it in your greedy hands, so you need to give like 3-4 months before you start thinking about receiving any major further updates, typically. shrug

I disagree. Pre-release gave the best reasons to concentrate on BC. BC is basically a marketing checkbox. This happens all the times at companies. (Including mine) It’s just keeping up with your neighbors. The PS3 has a BC story so XBox360 needs one too. It’s not about selling systems directly. It’s just about being able to say “we have BC.”

It’s not about pleasing the consumer. Once someone has bought a 360 already it doesn’t matter, MS already has their money. It’s like whenever someone announces a new system, everyone else announces theirs. Keeping pace. Companies often create entire products just to be able to say they have them, even if they don’t expect to make money off of them. It’s a perception thing. No BC = negative perception.

Clearly BC wasn’t a concern for MS until some marketing guys decided it was an important checkbox to be able to check off. The system wasn’t designed with it in mind and they didn’t even write a proper emulator.

I’m surprised that margalis didn’t bring up all the stuff that Microsoft hacked out of Vista.

Just another example. Honestly it’s boring because it’s something MS does on a very regular basis. It’s a business strategy. Announce somthing grand to capture attention - then maybe deliver it or maybe not.

For those not in the know, Vista (AKA Longhorn) was going to have a bunch of stuff like a database-backed file system that got scaled down then ditched entirely.

If Microsoft doesn’t get 2D Fighting games to work on 360, someone else will on their own.

That’s my prediction.

360 will do some stuff for 2d fighters, just not play XBOX 2d fighters(right now at least). We have Neo Geo Battle Colleseum(with online play) on the horizon and SNK has mentioned plans to bring newer 2d fighters to the system. It wouldn’t be surprisng to see SSTenka or KoFXI on the system.

I don’t think anyone is doubting that, and if your point was that “MS may or may not ever get around to the 2d fighters, but they reserve the right to not do it.” Then it would be fine.

Right now I, and most people are pretty comforable with the stance “Keep your xbox, hope they add BC to 360, we’ll see later”, I don’t see much here to leave that stance.

One point I think has been neglected is that BC will spur a lot of Xbox1 converts/fans into investing in the X360, especially casual gamers. For the non-rich and non-hardcore, this will be a serious factor in buying a $400 machine. This was a major selling point for the PS2. A lot of parents have an easier time with a trade in and knowing they can play all those games they already shelled out for.

FWIW- the March compat updates are out - 3 new games, nothing of 2d fighting game interest.

I dunno where to ask this, but I thought I’d ask here because it could be an emulation thing. With Ninja Gaiden, how do you quit to the menu from within the game? How do you quickly reload the last save?

Damn…

Epic bump

Some progress in the 2D realm, now we just need CVS2 and Marvel:

SF:AC
KOF Neowave
KOF 2002/2003
Guilty Gear Isuka

I guess that the cries of the 2D fighting crowd finally reached those upper floors at Microsoft.

GGIsuka? Do they mean X2 #Reload?

I’m thinking that Microsoft just made a major reach for Japanese support. I support it.
