No backwards compatibility for 2d fighters on the XBOX 360

PS3 BluRay is backwards compatible with all CDs and DVDs. So I would assume all your old PS titles will work on the PS3.

Sony has already bragged many times that PS3 will support the full libraries of PS1 and PS2.

  1. There’s a team in Xbox that just does emulation development, I happen to speak with one or two of them on a daily basis and they love what they do.
  2. There was an official statement made on Xbox.com if you actually followed the link I provided which promised emulation of the entire library.
  3. Don’t lecture me on how emulation works and what MS will and will not do, trust me.

And it’s not like the X360’s success overall will be based on its performance in Japan. The only market that really matters in the long run is the US market. The popularity of the original Xbox here in the US is proof of that.

Gotta quote this again. Just in case people didn’t read it the other bazillion times it was posted.

The December update for compat is out:

Ridge Racer 6 is the best selling 360 game in Japan. That’s fucking awesome. <3 Japan.

You guys totally missed my point. MS said for years that they would support alpha channel stuff in DirectDraw in “the next version.” The next version came and went several times, there was never alpha channel support. No version of direct draw EVER supported alpha channel stuff.

Why does it matter that they “officially” dropped DirectDraw support? Maybe in a year they will “officially” drop 2d game emulation support. Then you will come on here and say “hey, they officially dropped support so that’s ok somehow.” ?

My point is MS was going to “officially” support alpha channels in “the next version” of DD and then they didn’t do that. So when they are going to “officially” support all games via emulation that may mean nothing.

7 new games on the emulation list this month? (And all based on the same engine probably) When are they going to get to 2D games, 2017? There are probably hundreds of games on the list ahead of some of the 2D fighting games people here want.

Don’t hold your breath. “Eventually” really isn’t good enough. I have a serious question: In what year will these 2D game be emulated?

^-- Good god, man. Get off your damned Random Nit Pick high horse. Here’s a Clew: Totally utterly different people working on those products.

So: your statement is basically akin to saying: SOMEONE AT TACO BELL DIDN’T GIVE ME A TACO AND SO BEWARE OF WAFFLE HOUSE!!! The proof will, indeed, be in the pudding, but if you want to hate on DirectDraw Alpha Channel support, plz go away because that just makes no sense at all. Having worked alongside the DirectX team (WMP at one point being DirectX Media), seriously, you’re an ass for demanding more of most of those people. You’ve got your panties in a bunch, but I saw people working their asses off over there… so stop whining like a goddamned baby about something that was over years ago and move on with your life or at least don’t whine about it in completely unrelated topics.

As it stands, they’ve said they’ll support about everything. We’ll see what shakes out, but drawing conclusions now is pretty moronic, since x360 shipped about yesterday in software dev terms.

puts margalis on ignore

IMO everyone dosen’t hate 2-D it’s just that everyone has moved on…well atleast everyone outside of SRK.

Eh, you have to take everything a company promises for a product with a grain of salt, how many game developers have we seen with very robust initial plans for their games that have to be scaled back when it comes time to actually make everything?

I don’t think anyone is claiming that MS is lazy, it’s just that because they officially say something, tends not to, in the world of electronics, make it anymore likely to happen.

Really, from an economic standpoint it doesn’t make sense to do it this way, if you wanted backwards compatibility, it should have been done prior to releasing the console, like the PS2, rather than having teams work on it after the console it relased. For when we are in the second year of Xbox360 titles, the urge to emulate more old games will wain, heck, you’d probably make more money just localizing newer games than emulating old ones.

I think backwards compatibility was something MS had an eye on in the development of the 360, but was never a main priority.

So while MS says they’ll eventually get to everything, who knows if they actually will. Companies claim things all the time, especially when the claims make their console look good to a particular group of consumers. Some people harp on backwards compatibility, others don’t mind having their Xbox and 360 running concurrently, and in the end I think you’ll see about half the library running, when they just decide to focus on future projects.

I don’t think this argument is going anywhere, there are less likely things that have happened (like #R coming out at all in the US, A3 being released for both handhelds). So without knowing the process there’s no reason to say what will or won’t happen.

are any of you suprised its an x-box most 2-d games are on the ps2 anyways thats why i hate the x-box i cant wait for that ps3 to come out man and i dont know why backwards compatibility isnt mandatory now days oh wait i know why microsoft is a monopoly and all they want is to make even more money…

I don’t understand all the uproar over backward compatibility. Your original XBox isn’t worth hardly anything now, or more accurately, you can’t get what it is still worth if you sell it. IMO, it makes more sense just to keep the old XBox for XBox games, and buy the 360 for the 360 games. I have two XBoxes, and I’m not getting rid of them anytime soon (ever). I also have a 360, and I don’t use the backward compatibility (even if it works for my games).

I like 2D fighters as well, and will just play them on XBox and PS2. I think backward compatibility is more of a selling point for the casual gamer that doesn’t want to have multiple consoles, or is more likely to trade in their old one when they get a new system. I still have a few PS1 systems as well, and don’t use the backward compatibility for the PS2 either (why stress the laser on the PS2 when I can just use the PS1 to play the games).

The only other consideration I can think of is space. If you don’t have enough room, you may not be able to support having multiple consoles. I’m OK in that regard (I won’t be getting rid of my PS2’s either when PS3 comes out).

Sony will win regarding backward compatibility, and probably also in total sales. For me, it’s about what games are fun, and unfortunately, there will be games on all three next-gen systems that I will want (Revolution included). This is an expensive hobby.

Jim

I don’t know much about the 360 from a technical standpoint, but does anyone know how do they add support for xbox1 games to the 360? Do they put software out on LIVE and you download it? Do they put drivers and stuff on new games and when you play them it updates the BIOS on the 360? Does anyone know? thx!

Well I think the whole idea of backwards compatibility really now becomes a selling point because gaming is such an expensive hobby now. I know of lots of people who trade in older systems to get credit to apply towards costly new ones, and backwards compatibility, for them, allows them to trade in a system, to reduce the price of the new one, without losing that library of games.

I’ve never done it, and personally don’t mind having an Xbox and a 360, not that I currently have a 360. (Reserving judgement until games I want to play come out on it.)

Wow, reading comprehension is apparently amazingly difficult. Let me walk you through this one more time, really slowly:

1: XBox 360 is going to officially support all titles via emulation.
2: Microsoft in the past has made official statements that turned out to be false. (DirectDraw is one example, there are dozens more)
3: XBox is made by MS.

Conclusion: The fact that XBox 360 is officially going to support all titles doesn’t mean it’s going to support all titles.

Official MS statements are unreliable. That’s a fact.

As far as keeping your original XBox - some people sold theirs, and in addition if you have a lot of other stuff (systems, DVD player, etc) good luck finding room.

Amen.

The PS2 backward compatibility was a one-time cost. They built in the compatibility and it worked with 99% of games. For the XBox 360 each game they want to support has it’s own cost associated with it. At some point, for some games the cost just isn’t worth it. Is it really worth spending time and money on a game that a couple thousand people bought? Developer hours are expensive.

This month there were 7 games added to the list, and I will assume that at least some of them shared engines as they were all Tom Clancy games. At that rate the XBox360 isn’t going to be fully backwards compatible until after the XBox720 comes out.

So for the people who say all games are going to be emulated eventually, I ask again: when?

I’m gonna agree with adonis_minus_20 and just say keep your orginal XBOX.

emulation…
