As long as we’re talking about other related franchises in lieu of NG4 details, I’ll throw my hat in the ring and say DMC1 is my favorite too, those marionettes don’t play around, and that Alastor sequence is burned into my brain. As RSG said, the creepy RE4/ gothic isolated feel and aggressive AI really puts it over the top. I didn’t like fighting Phantom a billion times though, but those under water skulls were scary looking lol.
Some people on SRK automatically equate depth to fun, I’m not one of them, how satisfied I feel with an action game depends on a lot more than just how many tools I have. Take NG DS for example, it’s no Bayonetta, but holding the DS sideways, dodging with triggers, and slicing up enemies with fast stylus action I was way more fun than the console entries.
DMC1 is as atmospheric as it is because it was originally meant to be a Resident Evil game that later got turned into DMC. I know most of you guys know this, though.
DMC1 is pretty dark. While still cheesy, it’s still the DMC game with the most serious tone overall.
So I bought ninja gaiden 3 razors edge today, and, as I type this on the first mission, was that scene where Ryu kills that soldier begging for his life taken out of this version? Or was that scene a demo only moment?
A handful of other scenes, like the bridge breaking in Hayabusa village stage had a quicktime event where you were shooting mage ninjas as you crossed a rope, most of the level layouts are the same, but all the wall running, pole swinging stuff aren’t quicktime events, they’re done like Gaiden 1/2, Kunai climbs in Razor’s Edge you can hit the buttons as fast as you can so they aren’t aggravating anymore(they used to be LT/RT with proper timing shit)
The sequences were Ryu’s arm rages up and you go into the alternate realm and slaughter enemies with Steel on Bone replaced Vanilla’s bits where you were handicapped and staggering around(though MGR decided they should have that, strangely lol)
Think they dropped a climbing quicktime sequence on the battleship stage but it’s been a while since I played vanilla
Get Sigma 1 on PS3 at least, it deserves to be played.
It’s good that you’ve found a new appreciation for these types of games. GOW isn’t bad, it’s definitely not as challenging as NG, but you can still have fun doing combos.
Your going to hate the final boss battle in RE…the made it silly difficult without spamming UT’s/OT’s, and you may like/dislike the alchemist…I think those guys were always dicks…and they made them even more stupid since the AI in RE have auto dodge lolz. I’m sure you’ll do well if you played any of Itagaki’s NG games.
I believe it’s still there in single player…but removed in Chapter Challenge…as are alot of scenes.
The final part where you have to build the Ninpo is stupid as hell…they made that way harder than it needed to be, the boss itself is easy…building the meter isn’t since it seems to take forever to fill even with OT’s which are rare as hell on those fiends. The only weapon I found reliable to fight them was the Scythe because of the SoB Range is ridiculous~ but outside of that using UT’s give you little meter for the final Ninpo.
Is there a way to tell if an enemy is about to throw me? I’ve had this issue since the first NG game where I want to try to react and dodge for a throw but I can’t ever find a distinct animation to do so.
In Razor’s Edge, any time you see an enemy’s hand glowing red usually means a grab if you don’t steel on bone. Other enemies you just kind of have to recognize their throw startup animations, but a nice trick in Razor’s Edge is that you can hold the block button down and still attack, soon as an enemy makes a move you can slide around them(or into some for stun) and avoid their attacks then start hacking again. Good tactic to learn anyways, anytime you finish a combo just be holding block and you can slide cancel some recoveries, or at worst, if enemy is coming at you just stop attacking, Block, and Furious Wind incoming attacks(the parry looking thing where you block, immediately slide and see a blue shadow behind Ryu), adjust your position and resume.
Actually, practice the Furious Wind alot, and you never have to block anything beyond first attacks and don’t have to worry much about staggers or guard breaks. It’s very handy in 2/Razor’s Edge, but nobody used it in 2 much
so im up to almost finishing the japanese level in razors edge. yeah, ive been slow poking it. the game is definitely ninja gaiden 1.8. not even 2.5. i mean, i dont know how vanilla 3 was, but yeah the combat is pretty much ng2, youre just weaker imo.
[details=Spoiler]so i just played on normal to start the game. just figured id blast through, get some characters, and just see how the game is in general. ive died way more times then i can count, and its kinda shocking. the a.i is definitely fairly aggressive on normal in razors edge, but i think its mostly because im weaker. they arent doing anything i cant read from a fucking mile away, but my weapons are weaker, even at level 3, there are 3 levels to the ultimate technique now, and they charge slower, with the first level being fairly useless. when im in blood lust or whatever, if i whiff the charge, it goes away, dumb, and sometimes its still not instant death for anyone i touch, even with level 3 sword and dual sword on fucking normal. the way health and magic works doesnt help. im sure i would die less if every fucking encounter didnt involve me having to keep the health i had until i kill everyone, then i get fully recharged. whos dumb ass fucking idea was that. i dont know about ng1, but ng2 did it just fine, and you constantly were getting fed shit you needed from individual kills, and if you needed health, you could buy shit to help you heal or get magic back. the fact that magic takes up your one and only bar in fucking full is shockingly stupid. not to mention magic is fairly weak. AGAIN, im just playing normal, and i feel supremely underpowered with no weapon less then level 2, and 2 in level 3. the combos i have to figure out i guess, but off jump, they are weak and a bit slower for some that were similar in ng2.
the story in ng3 razors edge is so dumb. i have no idea what is going on. i mean, its outlandishly stupid. i know ng isnt known for its plot persay, but jesus fucking christ. friendly ryu who shows his face all the time is so gay. lol. hi little girl, shake my bloody vain hand that looks like it should be attached to satan. oh, you dont wanna shake it and are scared. man, that makes me sad as a ninja who murders anything walking for a living. lol. those reasons arent why its bad, just stupid shit ive observed.
all the bosses are wack so far, and the dino was so fucking tedious. i hated the dino boss. it was so boring, repetitive and tedious. ugh. all the wannabe more realistic, technology, garbage is a joke. on its best day its laughable. you just do no damage on bosses either. on normal in ng2 with a level 3 weapon, you could soar through fucking bosses like a hot knife on butter.
my sub weapons are weaker too. ryu is just a weak piece of shit so far. the game wont be foreign to you if you have mastered, played, or at least are good at ninja gaiden 2, but if it wasnt for the fact that xbox 360 ng2 has NO GOD DAMN FUCKING CHAPTER SELECT, and ng3re has 3 delicious female characters and basic game options to allow me to enjoy replays, i wouldnt think twice about razors edge. to be honest, if i just had chapter select in ng2, id probably beat razors edge and never give a fuck about it again, other then to play ayane and kasumi every now and then.
the tone, imagination, game mechanics, etc… are just far superior in ng2, and that was an unfinished game. ng3 and ng3 razors edge couldnt surpass an unfinished game that came out in 2008. LOOOOL.
also, its nit picking, but there is too much moaning and groaning and noise in razors edge. like i can kinda play ng2 without arousing the attention of anyone. in ng3re immediately my girl is like wtf are you playing. lol. everyone is going , UGGGGH, FUCK YOU. AAAAAH, UGGGH, AAAAAH. stfu already.
the level up system in this game is atrocious too. finding those little golden shit piles just to learn new skills and shit is also fucking dumb. just let me progress and buy everything. i shouldnt have too play treasure hunt to get shit fundamental to the gameplay. i understand you had to search a super small bit in ng2 for a couple weapons that you could easily miss, but for the most part everything is right there for you. just kill shit, get shit, and upgrade shit.
so after i just got bored and disgusted with the game in the japanese level, i took it out and took a break. then i popped in ng2, and was like, lemme check a normal save i have and compare. shit felt similar combat wise, but the experience was night and day for me. i felt powerful again, delimbing the fuck out of my enemies in just a couple hits max with my level 3 weapons, dash jump land charge into ultimate technique, obliterating groups of ninjas was delicioius. i had constant health and magic coming in, i had more then one time to use my magic and it was way more powerful then in ng3RE. the obliteration techniques were even better, the combos much better, especially for the staff. staff in ng2, a simple jump xxy gave you access to the most powerful technique in the game against your enemies. standard xxx or yyy combos with the staff in ng2 were infinitely better then that hot garbage plate of combos for the staff in ng3RE. ng2 was just more intuitive and easier from the jump.
me having struggles in normal mode on ng3RE with how powerful i am in the game is fairly telling. i am a bit more reckless in my hack n slash compared to maybe others im sure, but i play these shits all the time. i know how to play them, and im not some super noob, but i just was like why the fuck am i dying so much in ng3re, and imo its because everything offensive in the game that gave me dat power in ng2 was just super fucking nerfed to shit in comparison. i guess i shouldnt complain that on normal mode, a game challenged me a little, but its not for the reasons i wouldnt mind. its because youve nerfed my ability to handle shit how i should be able too. eh, my opinion. maybe its because everything feels so tedious in ng3re too, that i just dont care and try to mash my way through as fast as possible just to get through the game that is draining the life out of me. im just like come on already, how many fucking enemies are there. lets progress for fucks sake
the qte’s are annoying too. you get it fairly quickly, and your like okay now i jump and fly, okay now i climb. its just arbitrary nonsense to keep the gamer involved, with overly complicated button presses to test you i guess. i fell a few times trying to climb. im like why does this matter, why isnt this just one button to climb, what is this.
ninja gaiden 4 will have to actually create something new and far away from anything ng3, and more closely to an evolved ng2 everything wise, especially more updated combat options, giving me more control of my character similar to dmc3 dante, bayonetta, raiden mgr, etc… sometimes i just feel stuck mid combo because i cant dash cancel it, jump cancel it, or something. i mean in a way thats what makes ninja gaiden its own thing a bit, the combat approach is different, so is the defense, but id like to see that shit open up a bit more. yeah i can start slicing, and as posted above, hold block while still attacking, and then do my thing, but eh, i need more from ng4, and i doubt we will get it.
overall so far, ninja gaiden 3 razors edge is worth like 12 bucks if you can find it at that price, 20 if you dont care, but ultimately youre getting nothing new out of it other then some big booby chicks to kill shit with, stealth you dont use, qtes just cause, and blah blah blah.
i’ll see how the game finishes, and how other options play out to entertain me, but im just like ugh, just put ayane and kasumi in ng2 and rerelease it. id buy it, and throw razors edge in the fucking trash can, snapped in half.
sorry, im very harsh on games that come out for the franchise and cannot even fucking surpass the titles before it. like all they needed to do was basically do ng2 again with more weapons, more playable characters, upgraded mechanics, or at the very least keep them the same for the most part, and a new plot with new bosses that really test your skill, and the imagination of the devs. even without any upgraded game mechanics, i might be salty a bit, but at least i know im getting something that worked before, but with new characters, new plot, FUCKING CHAPTER SELECT, and new awesome bosses of all kinds like ng2 that just keep you on your toes.
so far in ng3re ive fought some weird british guy with the weakest string of combos ever, multiple dumb ass helicopters, a useless fucking dinosaur, and some big demon thing at my village, to which i have no fucking clue why i fought that thing at all. all the levels have been bland as fuck except my home village, and i couldve just threw up all over the desert stage. ugh[/details]
