Heh Shinobi is pretty god damn fucking good.
quote of the year.
if you’ve never played NGB then you’ve never played ninja gaiden.
no offense but black is indescribably hard.
its hard mostly coz they nerfed flying swallow so much from how useful it was from the first game. and in a game that is THAT hellishly difficult…that flying swallow technique that gave you one single advantage over the game’s foes being nerfed means…
you WILL spike your controller in fits of foam mouthed rage!!! screaming "who the F made this broken as $@#& game!!!"
mission mode+broken NG series camera+nerfed flying swallow technique=AAAAAARRRRRGHHHHHH!!!
still one of the greatest games ever made though.
So good it might make me want to hijack this thread. I should go back to being good at that game so I can beat it on Hard already with that one white ninja, so I can unlock Joe Musashi. I remember bragging to my friends about S ranking every stage and how none of them could get on my level. But on SRK I imagine all you guys S ranked every stage.
Yeah Shinobi is a great example of a game that’s hard and not because the camera gets in the way. When you zoomed to an enemy behind you the camera turned to make sure it was on your current target. Could you imagine Shinobi with NG2’s sloth camera? shivers
My favorite TATE ever has to be on the last boss followed by TATEing the fucking door. THE FUCKING DOOR.
THE FUCKING DOOR HAD A HEALTH METER
While Nightshade improved upon Shinobi in a lot of ways something still felt missing. Maybe it was because I was a sexy beyotch instead of a dude with a sword that was sucking away my life.
It’s cuz Nightshade sucks. It’s not fun.
I like to think of NG2 as the best action game engine ever combined with the worst action game ever. Hitting people was cool, but everything else was a complete mess (including hitting people once they started shoving 6+ enemies in every encounter).
That’s a shame about NG3’s weapons. Having a bajillion awesome weapons was the best part of NG2.
there was nothing better than enemies simply laughing at your flying swallow and punishing you for it.
I WOULDN’T SAY NIGHTSHADE SUCKS, BUT IT HAD ITS PROBLEMS.
-for one thing, without akujiki in hibana’s hand, there’s nothing compelling you to run frantically forward towards the exit of the stages.
-the stages are needlessly long. so long there are loading screens in the middle of stages. multiple loading screens!
-flying enemies blocking your sword slashes. flying enemies with armor that blocks sword slashes. just dumb. period.
-the game deducting points for “lack of destruction of the enviornment” or “failing to collect coins” or “receiving damage” or “taking too long to clear the stage” and you losing your S-rank rating coz of these silly reasons…making S-ranking in nightshade too damn elusive. so it loses replay value coz you end up giving up trying to S-rank every stage.
-hellish hellish platforming in stages 9, 11 and 12. especially 12.
like Shinobi’s EX stage degree of hellish platforming.
-stupid missions in a ugly training room enviornment.
-even worse time attack & survival modes.
now, that being said…its the only game that is in anyway even remotely similar to Shinobi.
the only games that come close are SEGA’s Otogi 1 and 2.
Otogi has the same stealth dashing, lock on system, and fantastic+perfect camera of shinobi…
almost everything is the same between them except there is no wall running, kunai throwing, or tate’ing in Otogi.
but the lack of wall running, tate, and projectile weapons is why Otogi sucks compared to Shinobi.
when i purchased Otogi 2, i prayed to god that somehow someway SEGA inserted Hotsuma with his Tate’ing, wall running powers as a hidden character…but sadly SEGA didn’t do that.
sadly.
it woulda been awesome though if they had.
I’d still rather play Otogi 1 or 2 then Nightshade…I do like Habina tho.
Hayashi does say characters from the original series will appear…the game is written by the story writer of the NES games…be careful what you’re wishing for…
NG2 does have that out of control feel to it, but compared to Sigma 2’s high health/low onscreen enemy count, I’d rather have my blood pumping than waiting around for passive enemies. Didn’t imagine Hayashi could make NG2 tediously boring…but he pulled it off quit nicely with Sigma 2.
Itagaki did admit in one of the few Devil’s Third interviews that NG2 never got the final push of balancing. Chapters 8 and 9 are really just terribly designed stages, but anything else? That shit could be handled, even when it was nearly outta of control. Furious Wind(block, tap direction, Ryu’s blue flashy escape) combined with de-limbs, Obliteration techniques…you could escape damage from Incendiary shuriken stick/explosions if you had the timing down.
Pretty much that. The combat is sooooo much fun, but move past it into the rest of the game’s design and it’s not nearly as focused and polished as Black(swimming sections aside)…it’s painful to realize that Itagaki will never do Ninja Gaiden Black 2 and fix the right stuff, and not castrate the game like Hayashi did.
EDIT: Btw, has there been any mention of scoring system for NG3? Karma Challenges?
SEGA KNOWS HOW TO MAKE ACTION GAMES LIKE NO ONE ELSE BROTHER. SEGA=ACTION GREATNESS
shame its all 'bout Sonic da hedgehog. they need to get off that sonic obsession they have over there.
i sorta regret they ever even came up with that mascot from genesis days. now they won’t work on any other projects.
Bayonetta is made by Platinum Games…
Fixed. Sega ain’t been nearly as hot since the last generation.
OK, so Sega should get Platinum Games to reboot Shinobi. Let them do it, and not make it a “Here, you fix this” situation like Metal Gear Revenge of Vengeance of whatever the hell it’s called…
I was actually hoping Sega would ask P* to do a Shinobi game back when Bayonetta came out. Capcom should get them to make a Strider game to.
^I’d take either but I’d like for Strider to be an awesome 2.5D game. Take the the gameplay of Strider 2, kick it up a notch but give it the ‘open’ world of the NES Strider.

EU gameplay…
Huh, never knew Altair was in this.
Ehh, game still looks pretty fun. Gameplay seemed like it was trying kinda hard to be “Bad ass” though. And the villain guy was hilarious. Looks down on Ryu for supposedly being a ‘cold blooded killer’… then tries to kill him in cold blood.
I haven’t read or seen anything of NG3, hell I haven’t even touched my copy of 2 but that vid GP posted was SICK!..looks really fun. Of course I don’t expect it to have a “Deep” combat system like DMC or Bayonetta but I don’t care really if it’s bloody, flashy, and a fun button masher NG has served it’s purpose.
I kind of feel the same way. Probably because I doubt they’ll be able to top NG2. It can be refined or have better adjusted difficulty but I just can’t see NG2 being topped so I too will take a mashy/easier but more cinematic NG3.
