I wish the guy who did the autotargetting system for NG1 and 2 was still around. Autotargetting is fucked in the NG3 series, sometimes Ryu will autotarget enemies no where near him.
I was attacking one of the last two enemies left on my screen, then Ryu does a 180 and starts whiffing melee attacks in the direction of a ranged rocket launcher enemy who isn’t reachable by melee anyway. That’s my biggest beef with the NG3 series, the autotarget system is fucked at times. The difference between autotargetting in NG1, 2 and 3 is fucking huge.
Anyone have this on both the Wii U and the PS3/360? I’ve heard that some framerate issues were fixed and the graphics overall have improved some, but aside from that is there any real reason to get this again if you have it on the Wii U?
A lot of the harder encounters in this game remind me of the 2nd fight with Dante in DMC4 on the hardest difficulty. If you try to actually fight them, you’re fucked because they’ll just auto-dodge or throw up an unbreakable guard when you attack and even if you do hit them they can just decide that your combo’s finished and just jump away or grab you mid-combo. Some of these fights seem to be more about finding a hole in the A.I. rather than being a test of your ability.
It’s not always like that. The game’s really fun most of the time, I just wonder what they were thinking with some of these enemies. It’s like they were designed to be annoying more than anything else.
Combat is so much more entertaining than regular 3, but goddamn if this game doesn’t have some of the most ridiculously stupid boss designs in action game. Atrocious.
Love the amount of shit you can unlock though. Hayabusa, Momiji, Kasumi, Ayane and Custom Ninja for Trials is pretty slick.
Get all your skills unlocked if you want. Don’t know how I feel about this, probably wont us it unless I absolutely need to during an Ultimate Ninja run.
So what happens when you get to the level end? Does it count 1 scarab, or does it make the scoreboards instantly busted? Might not make a big deal, since most people will probably use this for initial runs. Chapter Challenge carries over all the data but is scored separately, so if it’s a “I’ll do this for the achievement” and move on. Probably end up getting patched for PS3/360 eventually, nobody gave enough of a shit about the Wii-U version lol.
Vastly improved IMO. Steel On Bone’s very hard to abuse on Master Ninja, amount of enemies on screen and the velocity with which they attack is very much like NG2. UT spam is there if you wanna go the classic route. Level design is more gauntlet like than NG1 or 2, lots of enemies in prolonged fights, but very intense and really fun compared to vanilla. Weapon movesets are awesome, Momiji, Ayane and Kasumi are great playable additions, Chapter Challenge trims the fat and cuts out almost all of the Ryu centric QTEs from Story Mode, focuses purely on combat. Ryu and the 3 girls can be used in Mission Mode as well. Momiji is a fucking beast, probably my favorite character. You still have your Unknown Ninja custom character, but he doesn’t have access to some of Ryu’s tricks.
Story Mode is way more fun when you’re fighting the normal enemies, the Ryu-Sized bosses have been toned down on their cheapness and SOB works on them, and most of the other bosses have been adjusted to be easier to kill. Dinosaur boss and final boss are still dumb as fuck.
Enemy variety is pretty solid, lots of Fiends from NG/NG2 come back, but unlike NG1/2, where the enemies escalated to alot of fiend fights in the 2nd half of the game, this one filters in lots more Ninja on Ninja combat, which I always enjoy.
Story itself is still pretty bad, and the cinematic visuals don’t nearly match the quality of 1/2, but they cut out nearly all of the Quicktime events aside from the Kunai Climb/Falcon Dive. Level navigation is back to NG/NG2 style, in Vanilla 3 wallruns, pole swinging, rope traversing was all QTEs. They cut out entire sequences of QTEs aside form Kunai climb stuff. You can finally turn off the tutorials and not get fucked over by forgetting what a QTE event was…
There’s some left on the larger boss fights, but way less button mashing involved.
I’m about to finish Master Ninja, and I enjoyed it way more than 3. Challenging but not as cheap as NG3/NG2 could be, only part I really loathed was the Acid Pit sequence(you’ll see)
Unlockable content is nice, lots of it, all the Mission Mode chapters are available, and the online seemed much better on Co-Op, was playing with some guy in France and it ran smooth the whole time. Bosses seem a bit toned down on difficulty overall, but regular enemies have been ramped up across the board, but everyone of them can be Steel On Boned if you get the timing down.
Times when I was praying I could land a Steel On Bone chain, fights get really hectic at times. Few camera issues on some of the larger bosses with odd zooms and camera shifts, but nothing a seasoned NG vet will have problems with.
Bit more platforming elements involved with getting to Test of Valors, but otherwise it’s pretty straight forward level design.
Not really too much that I’d call cheap actually, see what Ultimate Ninja does.
It’s got it’s rough spots still in the Story Mode, but otherwise it’s probably the single most content loaded Gaiden out there. I really like the combat system, like the scoring system. Keeping the Rage Mode active is pretty challenging, but in Chapter Challenge I nailed 1st place(been passed now) on the first 3 levels without doing much SOB abuse aside to trigger the rage mode. SOB system may not be everyone’s preferred combat style, but since high level Karma runs on Black(Dabi UT spam FTW) and NG2(no timed encounters, UT spam for eternity) got kind of tedious, it’s an interesting change. It’s hard to land in some of the more claustrophobic encounters.
Only thing I disagree with again(same as Gaiden 2), is that the scoring methods should be universal…UTs at 100 points was a good change to tone down UT related score abuse, but SOB being 500 points and being the most surefire way to trigger Rage forces a bit of reliance on it, but I’m pretty sure if you do Obliteration/Silent Kill(arrow headshot) or more specialized finishes quickly it will go to Rage Mode as well. Should have made Obliteration Techniques 500 points as well and trigger rage mode, cuz honestly keeping the Rage up under pressure is fairly tough. Once you get all the weapons to level 3, Rage Mode UTs can chain up to 10 enemies. Again, may not be the perfect scoring system, but it does require quite a bit of precision.
Good Game. Does require and Online Pass for online/Co-op if you’re renting, but it restores my faith in the series.
Yeah, honestly they should have called it the Apology Edition instead of Razor’s Edge.
Story Mode is Ryu exclusive
Chapter Challenge lets you play through every chapter with any character and leaderboards
Gold scarab collectables(unlocks weapons and costumes)
Tests of Valor are back
Have like 5 costumes for Ryu, 4 for Ayane
Around 100 Total Trial missions, tracks each one you defeat with each character if you’re the completionist type
If you like the whole cheevo/trophy thing, it’s got a bunch requiring multiple playthroughs(beat every chapter with every character)
Damn, just beat Master and didn’t get the cheevo for Hard Mode. Have to play Normal, Hard, Master and Ultimate Ninja modes each to get Chapter Challenge version. Beating Normal unlocks Master Ninja(and I’d recommend Normal mode actually). Any items you purchase through Normal will be available for purchase right away when you start the next difficulty.
Got the game yesterday and played a bit over my friend’s house. Very pleased. I have some questions though, while fighting the first boss (dude with rapier) I didn’t know how to deal with him countering me. It seems like he can dodge and counter attack before I’m able to block (like, holding the block button as soon as I see him dodge my attack) and he’d often catch me in the recovery frames of my slide. This may just be my shitty timing though.
Just hold block and Furious Wind(Block Attack+Left Analog at attack hitting you). Have to learn to use this move heavily in this version. Regent has attack strings, what I usually do is wait for him to start attacking, Furious Wind his attack strings and dodge to his left on first hit, dash to his right(kind of a back and forth action) until he stops then slash. If you’re using Katana, XXXX is safe usually, or XXX. You can also hit him easily if you have the Cicada Surge move unlocked too. Hold Block and when he hits with first attack, tap A and you’ll do a teleport and wind up behind him. New technique, comes in handy alot, but takes a sliver of Ninpo to execute
Really easy method if you’re still having trouble, upgrade the Scythe to level 2 and jump and do a 360 motion+Y on landing. Ryu will spin the Scythe in two circles and Regent will often run into it.
Just finished the game and holy shit. Worst final boss ever. These bosses are DMC2 levels of ass. After MGR the bossbattles in other games just can’t compete, but this was just so goddamn bad.
Spoiler
Who the fuck thought it was a good idea to have you spam UT’s for 10 mins against enemies you’ve been fighting the whole game. If that wasn’t enough, let’s have the boss scream like a little girl every 5 seconds
I will say that the game is alot less cheap than NG2 which is good. SOB works well and feels satisfying. Some of the scenes were a nice change of pace, they kept them short and sweet. Test of valor has cool NG2 throwbacks (that really suprised me). There is so much stuff to do and unlock and co-op was pretty fun aswell. Multiplayer is the worst piece of shit I’ve ever played. Just terrible. Only reason I played more than 1 game was because I wanted to get all the MP achievements. Never touching that again.
I’m about to go on a bit of a rant here. Maybe someone can explain some things to me so I can understand some of the decision making and hopefully see the error of my ways.
I definitely had fun playing it, but compared to NG2 the combat is so lacking. Didn’t they playtest their game and think: “Hey this doesn’t play nearly as tight as NG2, maybe we should start from there instead of our shitty flop named NG3”. Even without the comparison, things just don’t make sense to me.
Why does everything you do have so much recovery? So defending sucks I get it. I’ll be more offensive then. Nope. Enemies superarmor through everything and delimbing hardly works. And the enemies that don’t have armor simply dodge your attacks (and they do it alot) and punish you during recovery. They can dodge counterattacks…are you serious? What’s the point of even having counterattacks then? I feel like half the time I’m swinging at air and the other half it feels like I’m using a wooden sword.
Well offense doesn’t seem great, let’s try this defending thing again. When my armor gets broken I slide as far away from an enemy as I can. The game doesn’t give a fuck and gives enemies shittons of tracking and insane leaps. Not a problem, I’ll just block after the slide…Oh wait recovery. Sliding into the group isn’t an option either (yay recovery). Turtling is not very effective. Some grabs are to hard to see coming and you’ll eventually get guard broken. Resulting in you sliding away and getting hit during recovery.
Seperated these decisions could work I guess (putting more emphasis on defense/offense. But together just doesn’t make sense.
I sometimes feel like I’m getting hit because of the sloppy mechanics and not because I fucked up. And no, I don’t find the game too difficult. My 1st playtrough was on hard and I found it to be pretty easy.
I don’t know if it’s the mechanics or if I’m doing something wrong. Hopefully someone here can clear things up.
I just got RE for the WiiU not too long ago. I like it so far, but it seems like I can’t use anything besides the Falcon’s Talons efficiently lol. It allows me to rapidly attack and take advantage of enemy hitstun, and I can dodge like a badass with them on. It’s not nearly the same story with any other weapon though. I’m 99 percent sure it’s just me, but does anyone else feel like they’re just limited to the proficient use of just 1 or 2 weapons?
NG2 was so fun because Ryu was so fucking good and the enemies were designed in a way that forced you to beat them using all of Ryu’s broken shit. In NG3 I feel Hayashi couldn’t figure out how to replicate that so instead of making Ryu too good he just made him shit and the enemies somewhat stronger, just feels like you are playing a gimped Ryu. Flying Swallow is a fucking joke in this game lol.
