Weren’t some of these animes or visual novels or whatever before they were fighting games? I guess you could knock Melty Blood and Tatsunoko off my list with that definition, but I mean new fighting games with original characters. Something that isn’t using pre-established characters, preferably from an established company like Capcom or Namco or Nether Realms or Arc Systems. That’s what I want.

When people talk about the “drought”, they should really mean the drought of players. Yes lots of games were coming out between the time that Capcom Fighting Jam came out and SF4, but they were mostly games with already established player bases. Those games (minus Tekken perhaps) could all be considered niche games that your average joe wouldnt even know existed unless they maybe had some friends that were really into them. Consider the timeline of fighting games.
SF2 basically turns the genre into what it is today, and establishes a large player base.
Other games come out that expand on the genre, and people looking for something new find their favorite and start to play it.
The “same” thing is happening now, SFIV got a lot of brand new people excited about 2D fighting and now the other companies can benefit from that by doing the same thing they did when SF2 was king. Give people who want something different an alternative.
SF is general and basic enough to the point where everyone who wants to play it can, and learn the basic skills required in most other fighting games. Mix in a little nostalgia like IV did by including all the original cast, and you get what we had here with the influx of “09’ers” who now have either left, stayed with the game, moved on to Marvel, or MK, or KoF, or what have you.
SF 4 AE Vs Samurai Showdown SS characters been sitting out too long, A new Final Fight perhaps. But Capcom should just really lay low for awhile they took a bad wrap for SF X TK, though that’s just how business goes hit or miss, but I really can’t see how they could bounce back from this year, any product Capcom comes out with FGC will grade them hard I mean Gamespot grade hard. When Daigo said that nobody in Japan was playing SF X TK that meant that game was very dead and very bad. I think it’ll be awhile before they release any fighting games outside the DLC’s they’ll be releasing. They gotta come out with some very bright ideas or go CVS old school with grooves if they do decide to do SNK mergers to get the respect back. I say let KOF 13, SkullGirls, and Tekken Tag 2 own FGC for awhile til they get shit right, but RE 6 looks good.
