What I want to learn about fighting games?
-
What to do in a Neutral Game (my weakness area of my gameplay)
-
What to think about when learning a character (Tips and Advice please)
-
What are important things to practice, when you want to improve?
-
Do you really need to practice for more than 1 hour? I always tend to play for more than 1 hour every time when I just started playing. I almost always often can’t find the time to practice drawing when I wanted to because of this. So is it a good idea to take a break after playing too much?
How I learn in fighting games? You don’t have to read this if you don’t want to.
[details=Spoiler]When I first played fighting games when I was like 7 years old, I used to mash buttons and joysticks all together because I didn’t know how to block since I thought theres a block button. I didn’t know how to do a special move. But I kept playing just because I liked the art style, animation and music in the game(Dreamcast version of MvC2 for example). The music in that game used to get stuck in my head every time I go to school for some reason.
Then when I first started learning how to actually play way back when I was in middle school is that during Super Turbo HD remix I learn the game controls. I read the section that says “How to Play”. I learn how to do special move, such doing a charge moves. After asking my brother “How do you do a charge move?” I also learn that there 3 different types of punches and kicks, the light version is usually the fastest and does the least damage while heavy version is usually the slowest, and does a lot of damage. The medium version does something in the middle. The special move changes depending on the strength (LK/LP) (MK/MP) (HK/HP)
During SFIV, I learned how to block, so there are low attacks, overheads, and cross-ups. I learn the strategy about the fighting game when I read the footsie handbook on sonic hurricane. When that happens I started winning more often during online. After that I learn more about the strategy through video tutorials, and blogs that includes pictures or screen shot that shows what they are talking about.
Now I look at Newbie/Beginner Links because it saves a lot of my time. Thats how I learn.

The way I learn in fighting game is learning from every match that I lose. I learned that from testyourmight.com (How Losing Helps You Get Better) and Umvc3 guide when they said " loss is an opportunity to learn". I won’t remember every details of why I lost or why it happened during the match unless I record that match.
Since I’m a visual learner, I don’t really learn things by doing, listening to lectures or reading a posts through forums, reading does actually helps but I actually learn 1,000,000 times better by seeing, I watch video tutorials that are interactive like David Sirlin’s or ElTrouble’s Super Turbo tutorials so I like to skip to the part where I want to learn.
I play Umvc3, so I use Umvc3 Bradygame guide as a learning aid, since I have a learning disability.
