Hey everyone! I am a moderately seasoned fighting game player (It all started with punch out! xD) I’ve played Brawl, Mortal Kombat, Bloody Roar, Virtua Fighter, Guilty Gear, Naruto Clash of Ninja+Ninja Storm+Ultimate Ninja, Every Tekken, and now I am looking to add UMVC 3 to the list. I did not play any of the other games because I didn’t have any friends that were into it so I had no local competition. However I met a guy who lives not too far from me and he plays UMVC 3 ALOT.
I picked up the game for myself and after watching a few videos of the characters and how they play, my main team is Vergil/Spencer/Strider, although I do like Ryu, Iron Fist, Storm, Nova, Dante, Zero, and Thor(I am horrible with all of them except my main team, though). I’m the best with Spencer because he is the coolest character in the game to me. My new friend plays Magneto/Wesker/Akuma and Vergil/Morigan/X-23 and man he puts a hurting on me every single time. I think the outcome of our last session was 51 wins to 11 wins… So I decided that since i’m so fresh to the game I need to seek external sources of information to help me get better at the game.
I have watched hundreds of videos trying to imitate combos and setups, but I am still adjusting to the speed and technique requirement of the game… for instance with Virgil after doing forward, down, down-forward L then teleporting down I can NEVER jump into the Air M… not in devil trigger, not in X-factor, or anything. I also cant find a good button config that allows me to hold down a button to attempt sword loops. Same problem exists for Zero… every single zero player constantly charges the fireball and I cant do it lol.
I guess the purpose of this thread is to gather tips and tricks to kinda level out the learning curve of the game. Links to threads or videos or streams are welcome, tips from personal experience, recommended beginner teams etc. I really like Virgil/Spencer/Strider but I feel like it lacks severely in aerial combat and ranged combat. (Mainly because I keep completely locked down by my friends Magneto beams and akuma assist spam)
I’ll be exploring the forum while I wait for replies, so until then… thanks and hello again!
you can start off with spencer/doom[plasma beam]/vergil
to start you off, just:
- work on your basic combos with each character, both midscreen and in corner on both sides. So a total of 4 variations
- create a basic 50/50 mixup incoming for each character
- focus on plink dashing. For doom, you’ll need to learn tri-dashing
- play a lot. And try to adapt to your opponent. Your friend using Magneto beam too much? Maybe just zip over the beam and smack him in the face.
Thanks for posting!!
- As far as basic combos go, I’m still extremely new to the whole premise of Marvel Combos. For instance with my favorite character Spencer, I would say I can reliably OTG with the wire grapple. However, I cannot reliably do AIR S to Armor Piercer. It comes out maybe 1 out of 20 times I attempt it. Also, when I try to do Down, Down-Forward S in the air for OTG it doesn’t always pick up. My friend usually tech rolls it before I can get the pickup. Is this due to my hit counter? I haven’t practiced doing it with only 4 air hits(M,M,H,S) instead of the usual 4(L,M,M,H) then 2 wire pulls then S.
With Virgil I can’t do sword loops despite attempting them to the point of callusing my d-pad thumb, therefore I only know his basic standing combo (L,M,H,S - AIR M, AIR M, AIR H, [AIR S, or Helm Breaker] - If I do helm breaker I follow up with Down-Foward H + super, and if I do AIR S I try to TAC or just do one more air rep before Down-Forward H then super. I also do the crouching combo (CROUCHING L, C. M, C. H, Forward H, Down-back M, STANDING M, H, S then into the second part of the previous combo.
I suck completely with doom. I can do his basic L,M,H,S AIR M, AIR M, Foot Dive, S. Then after that if I’m not in the corner I can’t dash over fast enough to get OTG and if I am in the corner after OTG I either do the second air rep too fast or too slow and miss one of the footdives.

I don’t even know how I would do this… I’ve watched many people do it on streams and in videos so I think I know where to start. I have to get used to using assists because I am horrible at using them currently. I can’t do any combos with them and usually when I call them normally for help my friend gets a “happy birthday” or just smacks them and they jump back off screen xD

Plink dashing is just canceling normal dashes with crouch, right? I can do that quite well. I haven’t heard of tri dashing. Is that like a ground dash mixed with an air dash? Ive seen doom players jump then dash like down-forward… I can do it but not as fast lol.

See I try to zip over, but between Akuma spin kick assist and gravitational pull or whatever (He pushes me down to the ground out of the air) I can’t get near him. Also, sometimes he will do his magnetic grab on me while I’m ziplining and get a full combo… for the life of me I can never guess which direction he will TAC…

Just go with these combos for now
Spencer - L M H S jump, M M H S Air Grapple land Bionic Arm
Doom - L L H S jump M M Foot Dive S Air dash down forward Air M <- This move should not hit your opponent
Vergil - L M H Stinger S jump M M H S High Time Dimension Slash
-
When you call assist, you should be moving around so you don’t get that happy birthday situation. Dw about getting happy birthday, worry about how did that occur and wonder what you can do to avoid that same mistake.
Just go with these incoming setups for now
Spencer - j.H zip down forward j.L
Doom - Air dash forward j.M
Vergil - Round trip, teleport
-
Plinking is just a normal attack and then cancelling the startup of it into a dash like so
attack x dash x attack x dash x attack x dash etc.
Tri dashing is exactly as you describe it. If you can’t do it fast, then learn it

OK, good, so you notice what he can do when you zip line. Now try to think how can you beat that. Perhaps you need to stop him from pulling you down or grabbing you. Maybe you can only zip in certain situations like say when he can’t do those moves. How can you make it so he can’t do those moves?
A lot of these things can be searched up on Youtube or the shoryuken wiki. Give those a check
I’ve already read the wiki for spencer and doom, as well as watched the videos. There isn’t one for virgil, but i’ll check out some more basic youtube videos because I mostly watch high level play xD Thats how I got good in Tekken!!
Thanks alot for the help… really puts it in perspective. Marvel is so different from the fighting games i’m used to… xD
