New Zealand, Aotearoa

I’ve seen about 2 other New Zealanders on SRK during my years of reading, so I’ll just put this here in case any others ever show up & perhaps search for “New Zealand” or something.

There are a few people that play decently up in Auckland, but I’m in Hamilton. So if anyone comes around the Waikato region, PM me or something. I play just about anything (I have to, with the comp here!), but prefer UMK3, MvC2, ST, HF, GGXX#R, A3, SamSho5sp, KoF2k2… Tekken 5 even…
The main Hamilton arcade has an MvC2 machine, Tekken5:DR, Tekken Tag, Soul Calibur 3, SF2:CE, SVC:Chaos, XvSF.

I’m also struggling to get a web site/forum up for the “New Zealand Fighting Game Community” (a.k.a. The Lost Cause), more for my own satisfaction than that I think it’ll get anywhere. Googling for anything like New Zealand Fighting Game brings back shit all, so that’ll be a start…

-update- I’ve got a stub-site up at http://fluxcore.technodump.com/nzfgc, very feature-free atm, but it’ll progress… eventually.

-update update- I’m trying to get Bunkei of AlphaISM radio fame to host a forum for the site, he’s more or less agreed, I just have to do it. One sticking point is the name, should I just go for the functional “NZFGC”, or something more exotic? I was brainstorming yesterday, but everything was pretty corny. The best I came up with was NZism, however there’s an nzism.co.nz already (institute of safety management!). Any suggestions??

Yeah, I’ve been looking for something like this for awhile!
I live just out of Wellington atm (moving into the big city) next year.

I don’t really have any idea what the level of play is around here, but I’ve done pretty well in random pick ups at the arcade on 3S. We need to get some stuff organised and see what the demand is like, cause it’s gotta be out there. Not to mention how well the oz scene looks… I found ozhadou today and had a breif browse, it’s pretty nice.

Anyway, catch you round, or email me and we can maybe do some talking about getting a site going.

Hey.

I’m a good friend of Fate, in fact it was him that got me into fighting games.

I live in Auckland, I couldn’t tell what the competition is like up here though, I don’t get out to the arcades much (yet). I’m far from being a great player, I have zero experience fighting against other players, as most of my play is home versions, for now.

There is a really great arcade here though, about an hour’s busride from where I live, which I should hit up and see what Auck players are like.

So yeah, lets get this going!

Yeah, ozHadou is indeed pretty good. I don’t imagine the NZ scene will ever be as good (even if you only take into account population level!), but it’d be nice to at least have SOMETHING going on. From what I understand, Welly has some decent comp, but I’ve not been down there to find out. My friends from high school/uni that were into SF moved down to welly, but I haven’t kept in contact, so I don’t even know if they still play.

The important thing is to keep it up! Spread the word

Cheers,

Yifan’s in the center of town has pretty healthy comp every time I go up there… ages back I certainly got some good MvC2, 3s and SamSho5 comp. But yeah, vs human experience is pretty important, even if it’s not very attainable in NZ…

Good shit with the Guilty Gear av, too… gotta get that game played more! Personally I’m stuck with XX#R on the PC, but it’s still damn good. Suppose I could mod my ps2 and, err, ‘attain’ AC…

Good luck!

Nice. Most of the games I’ve seen played in the arcades when I last went was KoF, heaps of play on those. The SF3 machine sat there pretty lonely, but when I move down in a month or two it’s gonna be getting some loving.

And your right, I doubt there is anything ozHadou like, but we need something. It’s hard to improve when there isn’t an active community of people playing. I’ve got #R on my PS2, but i’m more into 3rd Strike.

In the big scheme of things, NZ is pretty small so travel isn’t too bad. Meaning if we got something going surely people could make it? I’m sure if we get something up and running on the web, we could spread the word in our local arcades, maybe make a flyer or two.

Also, as I mentioned on the chatbox on your site, any idea on where to get seimitsi/sanwa parts around here?

Anyone know if Yifan’s has KoFXI yet? They seem to be pretty onto it when it comes to new games, especially KoFs. Or GGAccentCore, that’d be good to know if it’s there or not. I envisage some sort of “arcade finder” on the site which will have the hotspots and what kind of competition/games are available, along with local players and their interests for match-making purposes. Once I get a proper site up I’ll advertise it on gpforums and anywhere else that might be interested, and I might ask the timezone in hammy if I can put some flyers up or something. Should get a few bites.

And you’re completely right about NZ size; the Americans can travel for hours to get to a tourney if it has enough payoff or skill-level… I can imagine driving to Auckland for a decent tourney, Wellington might be a bit much though  It all depends on what kind of tourney could be run; it’s so hard to gauge interest. I’ve been contemplating trying to run an MvC2 tourney in Hamilton (maybe even a monthly or something), but the more I think about it, the less I believe anyone would show up; so I probably shouldn’t waste my time. Kind of sad.

Sticks: I replied on my site, but here it is again for completeness’ sake:
Ozsticks.com.au sell Sanwa parts, I was quoted ~$35AU (incl shipping) for a balltop. I haven’t actually completed an order with them, but I believe them to be a pretty decent place. As for locally, nothing that I’m aware of; Coin Cascade deal solely in MCA sticks from what I understand.

I see. I would be willing to travel for decent competition, on almost any game. Though, I sold my MvC2 (IDIOT -_-), so I haven’t even seen that game played in ages.

Well, I’ve been thinking about possible tourneys, and while I’m not sure MvC2 will be worthwhile, I know there’s a pretty decent following of Tekken5:DR down here, and if the timezone is willing to let me/help me run a tourney I’d be more than happy to do that for DR. I don’t play (only Tekken5), so running a bracket wouldn’t be a problem, and maybe my friend and I could put on a little MvC2 “exhibition” on the side to try to get some interest. That’s probably the most sensible way to approach the scene, at least here. I’m sure in Auckland or Welly maybe a 3s tourney would work as well, but we don’t have 3s here.

And if the tourney goes well, I’d think about making it a monthly thing, maybe something like a ranbat… who knows? It just needs to start somewhere I guess.

Also, I’ve set up a website at http://nzism.alphaism.com, with a forum. Things aren’t settled yet (the theme IS going to change, it’s ugly as), but it’s a start… I’ll edit the first post & start advertising it some more once I’m happy with it.

Peace,
