New York Comic Con

Who’s going to the con next weekend?

Banditchain is a New Yorker, and I’ll be visiting him for a week. We’ll both be attending the con. Anyone else?

I’ll be there!

If anyone wants to meet up with me at the show, toss me a PM and we can figure something out.

If you have a PSP make sure you head over to Sony’s booth - 411 - they are giving out free UMD cases to the first 50 people who present them a PSP! Aw man, why can’t they give out PS3s? Ohs well, gotta love the freeness when you can get it.

From the E-Mail I got from the NY Con peeps -

“The first 50 consumers to bring their PSP by the PlayStation booth #411 each day will receive a UMD carrying case. You can also be one of the first people to try Motor Storm online against consumers at the PlayStation store in San Francisco. Show off your vocal talent at the Sing Star stage or download content directly to your PSP from the PSP Spot. A daily raffle will be held for a PSP and other PlayStation prizes!”

Here’s the site anyway. Seems all they have available now are Friday and Sunday passes.

I’m going to be there Friday and part of Saturday. Hit me up if you want to hang.

btw Where is Mike Mignola sitting? I need to go there badly to see what he has for sale. I’m really looking to buy a nice piece.

Oh snap, I put in a search for the NY Comic Con that I could post on and didn’t realize this was in the fan art section, I’ll create a seperate thread for this in General later on lol!

Yeah SFMC, I’ll send you a PM!

Don’t know where Mike is sitting for autographs, he will be at a panel discussion at least.

I’m not sure if I can actually go, it’ll be fucking SWAMPED (that’s an understatement) and the only day I’m free is Sunday.

._.

going sat and sun. i’ll be at the school of visual arts/cartoon allies booth

I’ll be there all 3 days but then again Chain already said that so… yeah. I’ll have my newly finished mini comic in tow assuming Office Max isn’t completely incompetent.

I will be at the SVA booth as well. =P
Friday and saturday.

PenguinC, who are you? a cvs2 fan that goes to sva? oh, it’s on…!

So ny comic con was overall ok. I expected it to be alot better.

Ron I think I might have seen you, but were you wearing black glasses and a black jacket? Getting your portfolio reviewed? I didn’t want to interrupt.

Sano - Sorry I didn’t call. I left the apt before I snagged your number. Ah well maybe next year.

Hey no problem, maybe next time. I had a really great time at the show! Wrote about me entire NY Comic Con experience here, I’ll thow up pictures later today.

Yeah, I was a bit dissapointed with the convention too. This is the first Con I’ve been to other than San Diego Con, which as anyone who’s been knows is ridiculously large. So comparitively it was qute small here.

On top of that I went to two panels and both of them the artists didn’t show up. Also waiting in line with a badge was a pain, when there is a line you expect there to be some reason; perhaps a bag check at the end or something, but no you loop around to the same entrance and they let you in just like they should have in the beginning.

Anyway, my main problem was the total lack indie and smaller press/publishers, and web comics people for that matter. With the exception of Comics Bakery, Dumbrella and a few others the small press/web comics population was totally unrepresented. On top of that no proper Image booth, Flight booth or Fantagraphics booth. Even when I had read some artists were going to appear at an Image booth in advance.

But enough complaining, I was able to meet a couple awesome artists namely David Peterson who does Mouse Guard for Asp Comics and R. Kikuo Johnson who did Night Fisher for Fantagraphics. I was able to give out a few of my mini comics and buy a few cool comics I had never heard of before.

I know the convention grew 2x this year but there is definately still room for improvement, especially with the crowded area that was dubbed artist’s alley.

My glasses are thin and brownish, but I WAS wearing a black jacket. You make the call  I vaguely remember what you look like from the picture thread from way back, and I kept an eye out, but I don’t think I saw you.

Tokoyama: I saw some of your art at the SVA booth and I asked if you were still around, but the girl I asked said you’d left already. Nice art you had there, though. I picked up some of the SVA freebees. Looks like you guys have a good program there.

I definately agree that the con was dissapointing in general for me. I think that it seems like a decent con for people that are purely fans, but for someone looking to break into the industry, it was only ok. Not that many places seemed iterested in checking out artists’ portfolios. There was also definately a certain lack in the area of small press/ indie publisher stuff.

I did pick up a few cool things though. Stephen Silver’s sketchbook is really awesome. You can check out some samples from it on his page.

aaaand, I got to play SFA3 at CTF. woot.

Yeah that was definitely you then chain. You were near the booth Mike Mignola was signing posters. Or somewhere near there.

Ends up Mike Mignolas was there, but was not selling anything. What a dissapointment. I did get to hang out with Jae Lee, one of my comic book heroes. He happend to live in the area I used to live in so three of us took a cab to the event. We passed up 800 people in line with his star power so I didn’t have to wait in line at all. That was probably the highlight of comic con for me.

Wow, all these stories bring back the good 'ol days when I went to conventions 5-10 times a year (smaller ones of course). Now though I haven’t been to a convention in years. I want to go to the convention in Chicago this summer, and it’d be awesome if I could attend the SDC this year as well. Hopefully I’ll be able to attend something this year.
