This was very enjoyable I didn’t get to play Marvel as much as I wanted to (only about 3-4 games) but I played a lot of SF4, thanks for the freeplay. I also find it AWESOME that you carry both cherry pepsi and cherry coke but that’s because I’m weird.

One thing i did notice last night though was one of the small marvel machines, near the third strike and other games, the screen was too high. I couldn’t see my first and second characters health. And maybe a little token we might get in the future for supporting this place even more, possible Sanwa setups for those sf4 cabs?. Either way can’t wait to see what you guys got in store for the community coming up this year.
Yeah, that’s a problem with the monitor itself. I’m going to see what we can do to fix it, but we might have to replace the monitor (which is a bitch to do).
We do want to make dual controls for those Head-to-Head SF4 cabinets, but before we get started we wanted to make sure it was still working. We got rid of it before because one of the boards got screwed up, and nobody we sent it to (including JP Capcom) could fix it. It’s working now, but we just want to make sure before we put the effort into that project and then the board dies =/
Sorry I wasn’t able to fix that MvC2 last night, didn’t have any time left. I had to do all the closing stuff. I fixed it first thing this morning, though, and it’s working fine now. I also noticed a few other problems and fixed those, too (i.e. JP 3S).
To avoid some confusion, a lot of people thought that Ralph was Tim >_<. Ralph is the owner, Tim is the ass who is behind the register at night. Ralph usually wears shorts, and a baseball cap, Tim is taller, and crankier.
Ralph said it was great seeing a lot of you, and that there might be some more surprises in the future. So, stay tuned!
As for me… This is my last week working here. I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me at school and I don’t have the time to work a job. I’ll still be around playing games and stuff, though, so all is not lost.
Not a hater. Out of all the arcades I go to FFA is the best. It still sticks with the American cabs which I love (I like how SF4 is in an American cab) and it’s probably the best place today IMO to play third strike. Yes there’s Denjin but it’s too far and unlike FFA you can’t just go at any random time and find players there.
My question is why are the SF4 cabs still $.50 a game? When I go to FFA I play SF4 a lot but don’t you think that you would get ppl playing the game more if it were only a quarter?
There are times when I play SF4 and I get a 10 game winning streak and then people just stop. And there are also times when ppl aren’t playing at all but they’re still on Marvel and 3S. IMO I think there would be a better chance that ppl would keep playing if it was only a quarter.
Out of all the arcades in So Cal I think FFA is probably the only place were you can get ppl playing 3S, Marvel, BB, CVS2 and SF4 all in one place. In other places for example only Marvel gets played and no 3S or vice versa even though they have all the games.
If FFA could make SF4 a quarter I think it would be top notch. But I understand that the boards are hella expensive and you want to make the money back but it’s been 10 months since the console came out so I don’t know. You think it’s time to make it into a quarter?
There’s a lot of factors involved. Essentially if we lower SF4 to 25c we’ll make half as much money on it, and since it’s our best individual game in the arcade on the outside it seems like it would be unwise to lower it. You need to make money to buy more games and keep up expenses.
But we’ll see, it could happen. I’ll send your message to Ralph and see what he says. I keep hearing people talk about how we have the best SF4 cabinet in CA, if only it were a quarter…

the best players around went there for tourneys and all that shit. [pyrolee, yi wang, victoly, tom, mike z, frankie 3s, even out of staters like jwong and ricky ortiz and even DAIGO UMEHARA swung by there if there was a good enough event] but after a while the problem was that there would always be at least 7 non working sticks. and its not even “sets of cabs” were broken. it was like… FFA had like 8 3s set ups and one side of each set up would always be fucked up and once denjin opened (fyi opened by a former FFA employee) we all had no choice but to say peace out to FFA. why the fuck do u think only random mexicans, koreans, or kids from granada high school who come after school and lick taint at sf are the only ones playing?? every 3s allstar either moved on to sf4 and/or plays at denjin now or even ai now since they replaced the boards. and the only reason i need to stress that is cuz FFA used to be home of the socal sf scene and now its still struggling.

^^^ I don’t know if you realize it or not. But at the time FFA was having poor stick and button problems with their cabinets, there was a guy who was there to fix them. His name was Richard, and he was fired. The guy you’re praising was, in my opinion, the reason why most of the cabinets were broken. Why then do you sigh in relief when he co-founds an arcade? Wouldn’t he make the same mistakes he made back then we we let him go?
If you understand the story from the whole picture I think you’ll understand why you think people weren’t showing up at FFA when Denjin came around. Once Richard was gone, I was in charge of maintenance, but by that time, everyone who was fed up with arcade controls left for Richard’s place. Don’t you see the irony? Once things started getting fixed around here, people left for the arcade co-founded by the person who was the reason things were broken in the first place.
One big reason why I stopped talking on SRK, is because it was full of middle schoolers who didn’t understand business or anything from an arcade’s perspective. Games break everyday and typically every Friday I go and fix the MvC2 big screens three individual times from seperate problems. We’ve got the best parts we can buy, but it only goes so far. Things break, but if the customers let us know, it will get fixed.
Without the whole Video 94 debacle, I bet AI would have kept roughly the same price scheme as us for SF4. Games have always been a quarter, back when pinball was the only thing in the early 70s. If you count for inflation then we’re making less money now than we were in the 70s with the same amount of people. Don’t you wonder why arcades are dying?
As for replacing our 3S cabinets, our Japanese 3S cabinet is one of our least selling ones. If more people played it, we would put in more Japanese cabinets. We’re not American or Japanese exclusive, whatever the customers prefer is what we’ll put out, and the quarters are saying, “American cabinets.”
As far as consoles go, the main reason why I’m for them is so that we can get console exclusive fighters as well as playing online. STHD, SF4 (console), etc. We’re for hardcore gamers in general, that includes Modern Warfare 2, and Left 4 Dead 2. just because we have consoles doesn’t automatically turn us into Dave & Busters.
I’m a hardcore gamer too, I play fighters just like you guys, but get over the stigma of liking one place and hating another. The owners of the arcades don’t do that, and the customers shouldn’t too. Just be glad arcades are still around. As long as there’s enough hardcore arcade gamers, there will be FFA.

I know you care about FFA, but let me say this. We replaced every stick in the entire arcade last year with BRAND new stcks. The reason why sticks are grimey is because people have grimey hands. The switches we use are the best possible, and they still break down way too quickly. The only way to make sure things get fixed is by telling us so we know about it. I don’t always have time to inspect random games. Things break down so fast because they don’t treat the sticks like they would at home. We don’t expect you to treat them like your own stick, but when players slam on buttons, they won’t last very long.
Oh yeah, we’re raking in the dough, Ralph is so rich that he drives here everyday in a limozine </sarcasm> If you want to make money, arcades are one of the worst decisions you could make. That goes for AI, Denjin, Super Arcade, everywhere. There’s a reason why arcades close, and it’s because they can’t pay their rent. If we had more money, we’d be buying new games and new stuff. But we don’t, and people complaining that we charge too much for something doesn’t help, either.

I agree with what the FFA guy says. Lets just leave it be. There is no reason to trash on one arcade or the other, everyone does what is best for their business. I’ve spoke with Ralph many times and what you guys think isn’t always the truth. I also talk with the owner of Denjin all the time, and everyone just does the best they can for business.
Maybe one day FFA can have 3rd Strike tournaments again, hopefully on good Japanese cabinets and I would have no problem bringing the top 3rd Strike players to FFA. Besides, FFA was loyal to 3rd Strike for so many years, I think it’s a new year and we should put all the past behind us.
