New to this game and most traditional fighting games in general, help?

Hey guys. Just as I am new to the game, I’m also new to this forum, so sorry if I placed this in the wrong spot.
So just as the topic said, I’m pretty new to most fighters like this. I’ve played Super Smash Bros Melee and Brawl at a competitive level, and I am pretty decent at Persona 4 Arena, so I’m not a complete newbie. The main things I’m having trouble with in this game is being able to use assists properly(as in, actually having them extend combos), being able to defend well (I’ve played a few matches in which my opponent just spammed some projectile move the whole game and I wasn’t sure how to get out of it, so I just kept blocking, took chip damage, and then lost), and actually being able to combo well. The only combos I’m able to do only do about 200-300k damage.

I’m also not too proficient with my characters either, nor do I really know which characters and assists go together to make a good team. I like playing Vergil, and I’d also like to learn Amaterasu as well. I’m not sure who my point character should be though. I love playing Zero, but I absolutely suck with him, and seeing that lightning loops are the main play done by most Zeroes, I don’t think I’d be able to use him just yet as I’m not good with even the most basic set ups. The characters I would be fine with learning for my third character on my team are : Morrigan, Dante, Tron, Wesker, Hiryu, Wesker, Felicia, Nova, and Deadpool.

So yeah, if you have any tips or anything at all that may help me out, that’d be great! I also don’t have a stick - I play on a PS3 Gamepad (though I mainly use the analog stick. Should I switch to using the D-pad, as I’ve heard that is better). Also, if you could recommend any teams with the characters I’ve listed, that would be great as well.

Honestly, put Vergil in 3rd/anchor since he has very good comeback factor with XF3. At the very least, this should allow you some breathing room as you learn a couple of other characters.

He usually is my anchor, though sometimes I switch him and Amaterasu up (Ammy is usually middle), though I’ll see to it that I leave him be anchor more often. Yeah, his XF comebacks are insane.

As for input method, just use whichever you feel more comfortable with. Analog Stick and D-Pad can both do the inputs you need.

You’re team looks OP as hell and thats a great start in marvel! Just a quick tip though, zero is one of the characters that require good execution so to start off try characters with more fundamental based movement/ normals. IE. Mag, Wesker, wolverine
