New Rufus player looking for some help

I just think I need a more simple character that I can work with, and instead of focusing on insane FADC > Plink > 1 Frame Link into Ultra shit. I would prefer to focus on Footsies, Spacing, Y’know, The basics.

Just with a unique character.

lol dude we have the same my set,i play rose for that reason . sigh but i dont find she has enough tools so i’m checking out rufus . he doesnt have the best footsies but his mix ups and pressure are wild. his go to combo is hard but with lots of training it will happen. Rufus is a right choice.

  1. I can’t really say because I’m still extremely new to him with only 3 days of work, but I’d say he isn’t beyond grasp for new players and still deep enough for veterans to enjoy.
  2. I think you have the right idea for how most people use U1. I’ve seen it used more for jumpy characters rather than Ryu or Sagat.
  3. dyeout has that one covered.
  4. From what I’ve read around here, I’d say they’re all pretty friendly and ready to help anyone. I know personally I’m going to be as positive of a member of this character forum as I can be, along with all the other forums of course. You have to represent your community well, and I think this group gets that.

I should of said spacing haha, His Dive kick and cr.HP will more than likely be the two aspect I focus on first, aswel as his Divekick combo, TC into Ultra, and basic blockstrings.

Also, I wen’t onto ranked and played 1 match with Rufus. I’ve never really played with him before, nor have I seen many videos but wow…EX Messiah…My Avatar was more or less my face at the time. Disgusting how easy it goes into Ultra.

His basic blockstring are more his go to combo, lol safe on block hehe. Yea i pretty much spent my two day learning his go to combo, freaking hard. ex messiah kick aka jesus kick rock ,and into ultra even more lol.

I’ll do a little basic write-up of how I think Rufus should be played, not sure how useful it will be to you newer guys but imo he is certainly worth taking the time to learn.

The most important part of playing Rufus is conditioning your opponent. As soon as you are one step ahead of your opponent then you can land huge damage off of a divekick combo or tc=>ultra. What makes Rufus so strong is that when he is in you have more options available that counter your opponents more limited options. This is good ass news. If you get in there, you’re in as long as you play smart.

Your options-

  1. grab- basic as it gets but once you know your opponent is afraid of pushing buttons this is a good option
  2. instant divekick- your opponent wants to try and tech? think again, eat huge damage
  3. cross up divekick- really good idea for those nerds who like to mash option-select crouch tech. if you see good anti-airs coming out (often a characters cr.fr) that keeps hitting you out of divekicks then this will cause it to miss and you get a good punish
  4. block- try and bait and punish, works well on dp spammers and people who like to mash anti air normals

You get safejumps on most characters off of front and back throws, and a hp galactic tornado combo.
im sure there are videos out there somewhere for people interested
front throw- dash forward twice divekick, or whiff st.fr and jump immediately after
back throw- jump instantly fierce punch
galactic tornado- jump after the tornado and you are safe

these are simple as it gets and easy to do so once you get a knockdown you start a guessing game with whoever you are fighting, knowing the matchup obviously makes this important so study up yo.

here are some little tricks Rufus has got going for him-

baiting anti-airs with a quick divekick is an easy way to get an untechable knockdown with a sweep, especially on characters that can be crossed up with jump mk

going for safejumps where you make someone think you are going to grab and then instant divekicking can be tricky

df.mk is super good for getting in, and especially avoiding lame akumas who like to air fireball predictably

A big problem for a lot of Rufus’ is playing predictably. A solution?- dont play predictably.
as soon as they are on to your jumping patterns or when you do and dont divekick, you will eat a buffet of srks and techs. Vary it up, condition them, and make them afraid to press buttons. A grab is so valuable because all the options you have after it.

There is a lot more detail I didnt go into so if any of you guys have any questions you can message me on here, this is a really basic outline so yea. Also, if you need help on xboxlive you can add me @dannyglover9090 and I will see if I can help.

Peace!

Swweet ,thanks for the info. sadly i’m on psn

Just double tap, Its where Your middle finger Hits the button first then your pointer finger almost instantly after. I actually triple tap ( A skill I got from playing flamecno guitar Ill try to make a video ) But if You can triple tap it makes hitting the 1 frame link easier, but you have to practice it A LOT.

Rufus is not a good character if you want to focus on the basics.

By any chance is rufus go to combo a one frame link? the lk lk hp xx hp GT.

Yup lk -> hp is a one framer. If you can plink then do so, otherwise get practising!!

What’s his best basic punish? I’m guessing some kind of cr. attack into galactic tornado?

His best punishes are cr.LP xx EX GT (fastest and furthest reaching) and st.HP xx HP GT (best damage, no meter, can more easily lead to ultra). Target combo, Ultra 1 is also good if you have the meter, although a lot of the time in these situations you can take them to the corner with HP xx HP GT and then ultra.

Great, thanks. What about the divekick? Let’s say I do it early, am I at a huge frame disadvantage?

I believe if you do it early you’re actually at worse frame advantage as Rufus doesn’t start descending to the floor straight away. This typically only applies if you are right next to them where you can do the dive kick much lower anyway.

If you aim at their feet then you should be at least about +6 on hit (you can combo straight to HP) and safe enough on block to not get thrown before you connect with a st.LK.

What’s the best combo after putting an opponent in a crumple state? (Focus attack)

st.FP xx HP GT

Rufus’ general gameplan is to get in he has tools to get over fireballs examples galatic tornado mp hp & ex all go thru fireballs snakestrike also goes thru fireballs neutral jumping & FAing to beat out fireballs dive kick low to the ground to get in on opponents (really good zoning tool) also his roll to close the gap beats out fireballs on start up (if your in range) galatic tornado is really good for pressure safe on block he has tons of life 1050 i believe & 950 stun you have to learn dive kick lk lk hp hp galatic tornado tuff link but it does really good damage you can also do dive kick lk lk mp hp galatic tornado easier link not as much damage as the other combo but still good damage dive kick shenigans is a must you need to learn how to use them correctly on your opponent try not to jump in unless you have a knock down guess thats most of the info any rufus player needs

Best combo would actually be:
cs.HP~EX.GT->FADC->cs.HP~EX.GT->Ultra 1
… Ultra 1 is corner-only obviously.
Costs 4 meters tho.
If you have 4 meters and need big dmg to end the game, it might come in handy.

Btw, in a no crumple but dizzy szenario:
The same combo but starting with neutral jump HK is the most damaging combo with rufus ( what i found & isn’t char-specific )…:

nj.HK->cs.HP~EX.GT->FADC->cs.HP~EX.GT->Ultra 1 /// 608dmg/630stun

btw:

if any new rufus player wants to mirrormatch my rufus, just add & pn me, i am only on psn tho.
whenever i am playing street fighter i’ll play u
i dont really like the rufus-rufus matchup, but its okay…
u can play another character too, just to get some basic ideas about playing rufus and/or how to play him.
