All this talk about SNES and Saturn controllers has me thinking… am I the only one who likes the concave dome dpads that use actual microswitches? Ones that use them include the PDP Versus Fighting Pad (bad build quality though), Neo-Geo CD gamepad, and the Neo-Geo Pocket Color. They have an actual click to them, and are like micro sized arcade joysticks.
It’s only a prototype, I’m assuming that if the community make their voices heard, Mad Catz might change their minds. The MKX PDP Pad originally had a thumbstick instead of a cross shaped dpad.
I don’t think that’s fair. That’s just like saying we should never use analog sticks on anything just because the N64 stick was prone to wear. The Neo-Geo CD controller had plastic that wore out. The PDP Versus Fighting Stick eventually stopped registering certain diagonals. But the Neo-Geo Pocket Color was executed well, and if a similar design was implemented with a larger nub in a standard controller, I think it could rival the Saturn for best dpad ever.
If you are looking for something modern that’s similar to the Saturn controller, though, the Logitech F series for PC uses a floating dpad that’s very responsive. It uses a floating dpad that sits on top of four cylindrical actuators that press down on a rubber dome for each direction. I kind of wish there was a six-button variant of it.
And physical evidence does not care about being fair. Science does not care about being fair, all it cares about is the facts, the truth.
It is proven the PDP "Marvel Fight pad thumb stick, the Neo Geo CD game pad thumb stick and the Nintendo’s N64 thumb stick all has the same flaw with two grades of plastic grinding into each other producing plastic dust which fowls the controller. The Dust is more contained in the N64 “analog” thumb stick (hint, it not analog it works off a optical encoder). But those are the facts.
A lesson SNK partially learned from the CD game pad with the later PlayStation variants (but not enough).
I have a hard time believing that people won’t constantly hit the Select/options buttons by accident, unless they have some kind of lock. Doesn’t matter for me, if I ever bought one it would just become and organ donor.
Here are some real pictures of the D-Pad. Hard to say you can’t trust it when you haven’t tried it. I’ll let the players impressions speak for themselves. I’m bringing the FightPad PRO to PlayStation Experience/Capcom Cup this weekend to let some pad warriors try it out.
From my personal experience and our internal testing, we strongly feel this is the best D-Pad/controller we’ve made with fighting games in mind.
To be the D-pad might be good, its disk design very similar to alot of Sega Genesis/Saturn d-pad designs
and the Sega Saturn pad is arguably one of the best game pads for fighting.
I am thinking this thing would be great for those quarter circles in fighters.
I’d like something with more defined cardinal directions. Either like Sega’s (+) shape on top of a disc, or an all-out cross like a Nintendo/FC pad. The “dish” types that a lot of designers go for always feel numb and sloppy to me. It’ll be interesting to see if MCZ can do something different with it.
Why don’t they make the damn right side bigger and put some Sanwa buttons
Why have you removed the second analogue stick?
Is it too much to ask to have a fully functional gamepad with 6 face buttons?
Or is this a simple matter of production cost?
Edit: I just don’t get why they don’t have a second analogue stick when there’s clearly enough space left, as shown in the sneak peak and it would make the pad attractive for casual fighting game players, that are looking for a second gamepad.
I feel like this way you’re just reducing the number of potential buyers.
When I look at this I’m like: “Looks cool but it means I still have to buy a second PS4 controller for other games, so fuck it I’ll just get a second PS4 controller.”
I’m mostly interested in the durability. How long can I expect this to last with normal use? High hopes for that D-pad though. The “lock” feature for the peripheral buttons would be a big boost too.
