Why?
I’m the official best Sim player in Holland. You wouldn’t believe how many competitors there are for this crown.
Hahahaha! Gorilla!!! Yea I cant wait for the game to drop. The more footage I watch the more I wanna play it.
Also @ bishop, that should come as no surprise seeing as even mvc3 as simple as it is and yet most here droped it not long after the game came out. Main problem here in memphis is that honestly most of our players are sf4 players and its the game they are most comfortable with so most ppl here dont want to bother taking any other game serious and even when they try to its not long before they flock right back to sf4 lol
Marvel,tekken,mk9,3s, flavors of the month and it was right back to ae. I mean I know sf4 is a good series even tho I personally dont like it very much but damn too much sf4 makes me wanna throw up lol
Thats why I dont even bother bringing my st set up cause I know it will be a waste of time and I really wanna.play it. But yea sf4 has made most of our players here too comfortable to really get into other fighters for long. Kof13? After a month if that it will come down to a handful of ppl if that, that will actually play it. Thats why its so hard to get our scene to grow here outside of sf4 because ppl just wont give games a fair chance. The variety here is very minimal and ppl dont take the games they play serious enough and then we wonder why we get raped by the shit other players do. Its hard for the ppl that do take their training serious and wanna get better when others are not on board. Oh well back to playing super mario rpg.
I invited you to play ST a few weeks ago but you were too busy with Marvel. I love that game dude, bring it and I’ll play it every week. I’m on GGPO all the time.
Because it’s not Street Fighter and we all know how non Street Fighter games get treated around here. Everyone is all hype and starts claiming characters after seeing trailers and whatnot for the game. Then once it comes out, everyone “gives it a chance” and quickly stops playing it because of some reason that can be overcome trough practice or just simply playing the game still. This has happened with BlazeBlue Continuum Shift, Mortal Kombat, Tekken 6, and even Marvel vs Capcom 3. It’s like if it’s something “foreign” then it doesnt keep attention long and considering the past, Skull Girls will share the same fate. Please prove me wrong Memphis. I would love for a different fighting game to share the spotlight.
SF4 is what I’m most comfortable with, I’ve invested the most time in it, and that’s what I like to play.
I don’t have enough time to really invest in more than one game at a competitive level. I started fight nights because of SF4, and that is probably going to be the primary game at fight nights. I’m not going to speak for anyone else but myself here.
MK9 - Hat tier. Broken online. Bugs all over the place.
BB - Combos last forever, good game overall, but not enough ppl played it outside of 2-3 regulars, if that.
Tekken - No interest really from the regulars.
MvC3 - As you yourself has said Jas, MvC3 is BROKEN/Dumb/Stupid. 1-touch death. And you even use good characters! I use Thor.
KoF 13, I’m moderately optimistic, I hope the top 3 are somewhat nerfed because I am planning to use garbage characters that I’m sure will suck lol.
Thing is, SF is the biggest/most popular game in the current scene PERIOD. More ppl sign up for tourneys, more ppl play it online, etc. It’s the number 1 fighting game in the US community right now in sheer numbers. Why would the Memphis scene be any different?
Not saying that other games are not good in their own way, but ppl like what they like.
Have I been frustrated that other games don’t take off? Sure. But viewing the FG scene as a whole, Memphis simply reflects what is being seen in the larger FG scene in the USA.
For the longest time Street Fighter wasn’t much of anything in Tennessee. Arcades never really got the upgrades here so everything kind of died but Tekken and Soul Calibur were everywhere, so people play what they see (stark contrast to everywhere else in the US) but as soon as Street Fighter IV became huge (and Gamestop’s National Tournament had a lot to do with this whether people like it or not. 25,000 people entered it) the scene reverted back to what it was in many places with SF being the main game.
I have been used to SF always being the main and everything else being secondary except for a couple of years in the early 90s when MK was a big deal. MK is more like Tekken now and that turns some people off.
Tekken is a hard game for people to get into because it’s not a game you can just learn on your own. You have to study it and people with a lot of stuff going on in their lives don’t want to dedicate that to Tekken whereas you can learn and see and understand things in Street Fighter by site, you can’t do that with Tekken. Add to that the community is not as good at “teaching” in that game because the character base is so large you have a very frustrating game. A lot of people play it (because it is easy to play) but it’s super difficult to master if you don’t spend the time on it.
All the other fighting games have some type of ridiculous thing in them causing people not to want to play whether it be chain combos, infinites, lag online, losing 65% of your life guessing wrong, etc…Street Fighter has always played a lot slower because it is not as spastic (a lot more options to make errors and correct them) and well, they have done a pretty good job with the rebirth of the series whether people like it or not.
Normally I see people play play the “old” school games whine about how SF4 is not as skilled (and mind you these are sometimes 3s or ST players) who just can’t adjust to the new games because they don’t succeed in them. A lot of people playing 3s/ST nowadays play in such a small group winning is a bit easier whereas SF4 the competition is a bit rougher…I’m the one who should be talking about old school but I play the newer stuff because well, I’m sick of 20 year old fighting games…if I wanted to feel like I was in college or high school I would listen to Lithium on XM radio instead.
Something like MK9 which plays with a lot of spacing and footsies as a base has a lot of issues with characters that some things can not be overcome. It also plays like Tekken and a lot of Tekken players like this game…it’s a good game, but it’s not an MK game anymore. I still play it but no one here has interest much in it either and I have taken my character (Jax) to a ceiling that means practice won’t do anything for me (especially with all the changes the game keeps going through) I would like people to play MK more (which is why we hold tournaments to see) but the community for MK (outside of Nash/Mem) is pretty obnoxious…
It’s unfortunate if you are a player of non SF games but I’ve been there when I moved here…had like 4 people to play and that was it…luckily games were dead (CVS2 was the newest arcade one and it was 6 years old already and 3s was 8 years old) so it didn’t bug me as much but if SF4 had no one playing it, I would be feeling the same thing like I did when everyone was playing Tekken 5…
I dont understand what is confusing about not liking the aesthetic of something so you pass on using it. I know Honda civic’s are great cars but I think they look like shit hence I dont spend my money on or drive them. With Skullgirls its the same thing. I personally dont like how it looks at all so I am not interested in it. I dont care how “good” it supposedly is it looks like ass to me. Were this anything else no one would be shocked if some people didn’t like the look so they stayed away from it.
Re: playing FGs other than SF. There were a variety of things that caused some games to get dropped but the thought that it boils down to being they are not easy or too execution based as the only reason is silly and elitist.
-MKs biggest issue was that for many people there were bugs and patches that didnt work unless you were online ect. Yes I know this has been resolved but the dmg was done. I love watching it played though and see value in it. But if no one else is playing I am not gonna bother. Also between Hastings people you are either a PS3 or Xbox person few people that show there have both. Its generally accepted this game is played on pad and we all know PS3 pad is where its at so that leaves out some of the Xbox people
-Tekken: This one is annoying to me. Thanks to Mike/me this game was getting mad play at Hastings week after week. It was drawing more people that any other game for a while. But the ONLY person who brought a set up for it on PS3 was me. I miss 2 weeks due to being out of town and no one comes to play Tek anymore so that sucks. That aside the game also has terrible online which like it or not has a lot to do with popularity now maybe TTT2 will be better. Here to you have the PS3/Xbox issue too
-MvC3: People stopped playing it because it was kind of silly which is basically just accepted now. Phx along with some of the other crazy shit in the game its lol worthy. Even still as far as I remember it was pulling the same number as SF in ranbats. But this game is weird in general, hell some of the people that still play this game are like “I hate this game it sucks but I cant stop playing it”. Also the online for this game was ass and we know how that goes
-3s: People who played this game the first time around new this wouldn’t last. This game is a tier mess and while its cool and I think it looks great no one should be shocked its not played hard core
-KOF: I like this series and played 98 like crazy back in VA. I am excited about the new version too though its a little disheartening that there are already like 100% dmg combos floating around for like every char. Also the prior KOF had TERRIBLE online (noticing a trend). It remains to be seen if this will last or not.
Has anyone watched the Battle Medley Singapore vids? The commentator may be the best EVER. “Links and stones may break your bones in this match!” Shit’s genius.
I don’t understand people perceiving 100% combos as a problem. Yes, every character can do them but NO character can do them easily. It takes tons of meter for almost everyone, and Ive never seen a 100% combo done in a real high level match, and I’m sure it rarely rarely happens. Even if it does happen, its 1 character out of 3. It isn’t like they Kula is calling in Maxima for an assist and you just 100% them both with 3 buttons in Xfactor for 1 or no meter. I mean hell, Gouken and a few other characters have 100% combos in SF4 but I would put money on them never, ever having been pulled off in a real match. I think me being able to land a random wake up demon, then hit one fat combo off of a vortex mixup and killing a character is just as dumb, or all of the match ups where a character can get a nice life lead and hold down back and the round is basically over.
KOF13 definitely has a ton of dumb shit. I mean the game has infinites! Nobody seems to mention/know about those. Also the top tiers are incredible. Raiden in arcade against a low-mid tier team seems like trying to stop a semi truck with three children.
The only thing I’m worried about is the online. I really hope it is good. Even this probably won’t save the game. Unfortunately, most people who bitch about defensive games and say they just want offense and rushdown I feel like are just talking out of their ass. KOF won’t really take off here at all in my opinion. As soon as Raiden is drop kicking them from full screen for 1/4th+ of their health, or they are pinned in corner getting mixed up into oblivion in a game with short hopping and twice as fast as SF… They will be right back to SF or whatever.
You really surprised me with this post. I thought you of all people would shun Skullgirls instantly.
Holy crap. Arrested Development is coming back for one more season.
Really, that just made my entire year. I’m gonna be strutting like Leo for the rest of the week now.
If it ain’t one excuse it’s another…
Lol @ astaroth. Not really I like a wide variety of games in general and skullgirls is looking interesting so far. But just like with any game ill give it a fair chance before I pass judgement on it.
Fair enough.
There are many different ideas that is setting Skullgirls apart from other fighters (choose which move will be an assist, one to three characters per team (player choice), infinite detection, etc.). However, the art and name will drive many players away from it. It’s good to see that a male character was announced, but then the name of the game makes no sense to me. The “all female” gimmick of games is already getting old…
Who are you referring to? Excuses for what exactly?
Because last I checked ppl were just posting about why/why not certain games got played etc.
I agree with that but I try not to bother too much with the name and all female.cast. I’D HATE to miss out on a game that could potentially be awesome because of the look of it,etc etc. so hopefully the game will show promise when I get my hands on it and if not well at least I gave it a chance. Theres always umvc3 and here hoping the game feels more legit and less stupid. Its a shame mk9 never took off here cause I really liked that game a lot. Its hard to feel interested in training in that game when my only competition is bishop lol. Too bad cause I think I have a lot.of potential in that game but then again mvc3 stupid ass always draws me away from any other fighter lol
Oh I know they take a ton of meter and what not. I was speaking more about the way something like that is perceived by newer players. And I feel you on the tier thing. I saw a ton of Acho vids for it and all I was was like K and Raiden on every team. And Raiden looked scary as hell. As for the people talking out of their ass on offense I wont speak on it. All I am looking for is a fun game with varied styles being useable. Then again what do I know I would play HnK all fucking day and I know it broke I just love the series that much.
My only problem with UMvC3 at this point is that the new characters (except Nemesis) are probably going to be top tier or upper-mid. Hawkeye is awesome, and has great assists. Strange has instant teleports and crazy potential. Firebrand IS the new Wolverine. Strider has two level 3s, and he has already shown he’s a very solid all-around character.
But, at least there’s no dhc glitch. That alone makes me giddy. I’m excited for it.
You think Nemesis is going to be low tier Astaroth?
