New mortal kombat is coming

IDK unfortunately. But yesterday on their GiantBomb bombcast he specifically said he dashed out of Kung Lao’s spin to set up a combo (he’s Kung Lao).

Didn’t say if it’s :r::r: and :l::l: though.

why can’t they just go with blocking like in normal fighting games?
i hate button to block.

Damn, over a half year to wait until it gets released.
I wonder if there is a “dash” action, too. I also couldn’t see any “run” actions in the trailer like it was possible to do in MK3.
Hopefully they put alot of MK characters into this game. A 50 character roster would be awesome. :lovin:

I’m not sure if I would like babalities, friendship or show mercy finishers but 2 fatalities for each character would be great.

Because this not a normal fighting game. This is… MORTAL KOMBAT.

There is already a screenshot of the character select screen. There will be 16 characters iirc

The original Mortal Kombat came out in what, 1992? It’s not like there were a plethora of fighting games flooding the arcade at the time, so saying something like “why can’t they just go with blocking like in normal fighting games?” is pretty silly. MK1 had a block button, so all they did was stick to it. Street Fighter II didn’t have a block button, so they too, stuck to it.

Here’s Gerstmann talking about playing MK last night. Skip to 1:24:15

He does say dashing is a double tap forward and back. He does mention dash cancels. Sweeps, uppercuts, wasn’t sure about roundhouses, turn around kicks, turn around punches, air punches into ground combo. Combo breaker is F+BL again. The X-Ray’s are different for each character. Some are a parry while others are just attacks. You can combo into them. The 3D version on PS3 will have different camera angles.

after the video i can say

fuck germany it will be banned here.

we didnt even get UMK3 on XBL -_-

I think this is the first time in a very long time I’ve not heard anything about a new MK that didn’t make me disappointed. So far it’s all good news.

The block button is better than having to hold back to block, it allows more freedom. In other fighters, holding back to block limits your options, since you could be trying to walk backwards, only to have your character stop and start blocking because the other guy started throwing an attack, even though it can’t even hit you. Block button allows you full freedom, and adds more depth, since you’ll have to choose exactly when to block and not block, not rely on the game to do it for you when walking away from an enemy.

Carefully reasoned argument there.

Okay, so, within the space of like, two or three pages, I had zero hope for this game and now I’m actually looking forward to seeing more about it. It really does sound like these guys are trying to do something other than just churn this thing out. It could actually be a good game.

Lol, on the contrary. Half as many people misinterpret my views on the new MKs, while the other half truly gets what I’m trying to say. Which is: Let MK remain MK. At honest best, it was a fun casual fighter that didn’t take itself to seriously that we all probably played hardcore without it possessing the quality, gameplay, or depth of a hardcore fg. This was what MK was. Until years ago.

Would I want this MK to be excellent? Of course. But recollect on what demand for a “good fighter” did to latter titles, most notably MKA and MK vs DC. It is because Boon and team are unable to listen to constructive criticism and suggestions, take this, and compile it into greatness. Instead, they go off in wild new wtf directions that produces shit.

I am convinced of this lack of comprehension from the development team. As such, I must be realistic in my expectations or even my desires. I’d rather have a mediocre fg which equals a decent MK with classic flair, that I can play for fun, INSTEAD of a undisciplined team’s failed effort built from the engine of hopes, dreams, and wishful thinking and stepping outside their limits, producing a game that I will neither play, nor make eye contact with.

We all want a “good” MK that we can play in tourneys and shit, yea. But don’t be so delusional that you forget past experience. I think we all just want a TRUE MK game again first. Once they give us a true MK again, then we can talk the next title being respectfully good and competitive. But fans bombarding legit additions after “hey you! put together a generic fatality with air combat with superman, and klose combat and some freefalls” shit will only confuse Boon and Co. Let them find themselves again. The inspiration behind what cultivated a popular phenomenon. Once they retain that, THEN lets hold them to that golden standard.

But for this title, I just want a classic true MK again full of badass and cheesy MK shit, that I may actually have fun playing when I’m not playing real fighting games. I dont want them fucking up and catering to folks by ATTEMPTING to do other shit. At least not right now. Get it?

Thanks,
Mike S.

A lot of the MK fanbase play for the fatalities and story. Those are the people that plague the MK fansites. So the MK team get a lot of dumb ideas from them. But now with twitter just follow the developers and send them stuff directly that fighting game players actually want. That’s what I’ve been dong since Boon set up his Twitter account. It’s nice to see good ideas actually come to fruition.

With all the positive reception they’re getting for bringing back the 2D gameplay they atleast know they’re on the right track to creating good fighters again.

BTW, block button > all

theres no reason why holding back to block means you have to have proximity blocking

agree 100%, and I can’t even fathom how MK borrowing from SF caused some dissension, I take that as a plus that this new team actually cares about making something playable. The heart of MK(for me) has always been the story, characters, and fatalities, but even those wore off once the mechanics got so shitty after UMK3.

I’m getting more excited to see this come to fruition, but unless Boon’s input is .minimal. I’m still holding out for failure.

That set up is the original MK set up

Not quite. Bloodstorm obviously took the button layout from MK but MK did the high punch/low punch thing rather than the front punch/back punch.

this… v

thank you

Here’s another hands-on, this time from GameSpot.

Interesting tid-bit about how the tag-team system works:

I don’t know what to think about the whole dash system… or anything really because I haven’t seen any gameplay footage. Well, I saw Scorpion do his spear, elbow and then uppercut. The animation for the pull looks a little slow, but it does look more realistic. Jeff Gerstmann said it feels “right” (the controls/movement of the game, that is). Well, in any case, I hope it’s a fast paced game! Also, I want brutalities!
