New matchup thread being made....rejoice!

some match up info here, seems pretty usefull

Alright I talked to daigo over the weekend at SB4 with the help of Issei.

I asked him what he thought of the tier list and also what he thought of for the Ryu vs Akuma matchup.

He thinks its 6/4 in Gouki/Akuma’s favor because of how good Akuma’s mixups are now.

Also he thinks the top 4 characters in this order are Sagat, Akuma/Gouki, Zangief, Ryu.

That top 4 is for arcade though not console.

I would probably say my personal tiers are Sagat, Akuma, Ryu for top, so I’d concur with him.

Good stuff Daigo. I agree with everything he said except the Ryu vs Akuma match up which I feel is even. Akuma has to take risks on his mix ups and if he’s wrong on those mix ups he takes damage. His mix ups are superior to Ryu’s, though.

I think Rufus and Balrog are better than Zangief though. Gief has 2 crap match ups, even in the arcade(Akuma,Sagat,Dhalsim,Blanka).

EDIT - Maybe not Rufus. I’d put Gief over Rufus at the arcades for sure, but not Balrog.

Daigo is correct about Gief. Gief has so many option selected mixups that when he knocks you down you become free.

To be honest, I don’t think Gief has a worse than 6/4 matchup now among arcade characters.

Same also as far as console is concerned I think people exaggerate the Seth/Gief matchup too much. Two head butts literally and seth is stunned.

When is Seth in range for neutral jump attacks though? Unless it can hit a j.HP.

I was like half screen away and he hit me.

I was like - _ -

Always thought gief and sim were even, if anything gief has a slight advantage, like 5.5/4.5 gief IMO.

So I think I understand why Daigo says akuma vs ryu is 6:4 in akuma’s favor now.

Cross up tatsu is super good. I am not talking about on wake up I am talking about in footsies. Ryu has to turn around and dp if he wants to get a hit its really hard.

As soon as you jump and he dps if you do tatsu to go to the other side you hit him from behind.

Also without meter ryu has a very hard time fighting akuma.

Facts in this post right here. Using cross up tatsu in footsies vs anyone is something people sleep on. I’ve always said without meter Akuma beats Ryu, but with super meter/ultra meter it is Ryu’s advantage.

I have been playing the match up wrong for a while now but I think I have it down pact fully from a strategical standpoint. If Akuma has a solid lead on Ryu he should absolutely turtle it down. 90% of the time that player now has ultra and/or super meter and can punish you for wanting to end the match quickly. All it takes is one shoryuken to ruin your lead and even lose you the match. Turtling it out is still very stressful but they’re not going to win more than likely without taking some sort of risk as long as you are smart.

Playing footsies with sweep and st.hk is good, but don’t fall in love. A good Ryu will adapt on the fly and begin spamming focus attack which Akuma cannot deal with. Defensive pokes and fireballs should be your bread and butter in this fight. Get the vortex going at any possible time and be very careful of how long you try to extend it. Sometimes stopping your vortex and turtling is the best option vs Ryu IMO.

I can’t vouch for the effectiveness of Cross-up Tatsu in footsies at all. Making cross up tatsu work is about pinning them down first so they can’t move. Japanese players most commonly wait to pin the opponent with EX air fireball first or move in on an opponent that just forward jumped a fireball mid-field before they start a cross tatsu.

How does that hit in the open? they just walk back and you glide at their front; easily blocked or SRK’d. It’s not like I’m theory fighting, this just never worked for me in footsies, unless the jump is going over a big whiff or something they’re just gonna walk back and deal with it with no trouble.

Rant:
People still rave about cross-tatsu’s like it’s free stuff for milking, it just crosses the opponents block direction and often beats SRKs. cr.HPs, crouch jabs into combos and duck~throw all punish these unless you confuse and threaten them enough with the other options.

^i’m interested in other suggestions on ways to incorporate x-up tatsu outside the untechable knockdown. the two scenarios above seem reasonable (following up an ex.fb or after someone forward jumps your fb mid-screen).

i often don?t try incorporating x-up tatsu outside the untech knockdown, and feel i’m missing opportunities.

any approaches others can share regarding x-up tatsu setups outside the untechable knockdown would be appreciated.

Careful being totally wrong about roundhouses and focus attacking vs akuma.

Tiger Knee is a pain in the arse. Try these:

  • Make it whiff completely with c.mk. Punish for free, or just grab. Alternatively, buffer demon with your c.mk.
  • You reduce push-back from blocked attacks if you block STANDING. This can sometimes give you an advantage against Sagat’s TK by way of a free SRK or a simple grab.
  • You can always teleport away
  • EX tiger knee is extremely irritating. Teleport away or get ready to tech.

Edit - I just noticed DevilKnight’s post that details very similar information which you can read here: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showpost.php?p=7709623&postcount=680

Blocking standing reduces block stun with all attacks btw.

^… by how much?

What do you mean?

Maybe he’s referring to demon.

Once Akuma has ultra Ryu can’t focus your footsies.

Just 1 frame.
