I think the correct time for the venue fee discussion, with regard to fight night, is AFTER the first tournament at the least. The rest of the players in RI, CT, lower and western MA, and the ME guys, need to see the space and what we have available there (more TVs than, I think, anybody, already on site, really nice projector setup, etc). A successful tournament will bring in venue fee funds from the tournament itself, get many more people who may not have visited the place to it, and definitely provide them with a positive enough experience that they would want to come back.
My vote is for monthly or bi-monthly tournaments with a $5 venue fee per person unless you bring a setup that is used and no venue fee for the fight nights themselves. I caution against a venue fee on the fight nights until we know the turnout is and will be consistent and established. At this point, I would say we should ride through the summer, see what happens, how many people we can get on a regular basis, potentially move the fight nights to weekly depending on several factors (PWA wants/needs because we are taking up space that could be profit making for them, souper bowl, tourney turnouts, etc), and run two tournaments (june and august). And then we hold the first tourney for KOF13 in the fall…
I think we should poll people for what games should be run at the tournament. I vote we run ssf4, a 2v2 mk, a bbcs2, and a marvel.
Cool thoughts so far, the theme being to hold off on any potential fees until we are more stable. Plus like Tim says the flyers for the next 3 nights have “no venue fee” attached, so thay have to be honored. There have only been two fight nights thus far and that isn’t enough time to gauge where this could lead. As we head into the summer months and people come to the air conditioned confines of the Arcade, I could see there being a huge boost in attendance as people schedules tend to lighten. It’s certainly up to PWA to make the call regarding a weekly outing and what sort of hurdles we would need to overcome in order to make that a possibility.
The other interesting point was the fact there are a lot of communities around us that have not seen PWA at all let alone the awesome setup we currently enjoy. A tournament is easily the best way to make sure they all see it at once. That would instantly build up the attendance for the bi-weekly Fight Nights making for a nicely populated arcade floor.
As for the tournament games I don’t think there is any argument as to what NEEDS to be at the forefront: SSF4:AE (by the time we have the first tournament it’ll be here), BB:CS2 (Platinum:rock:), MK9 (Casual fans love it), and Marvel vs Crapcom 3 (not a typo). If you have a tournament with these games featured you will get multiple entries from every person attending. Any more games unless they were of the arcade variety wouldn’t be beneficial. Utilizing the Arcade units in some way would be essential, even at the expense of one of the 4 console games mentioned. Once established we can start bringing in the guilty gear, arcana 3, melty, HNK type stuff for side tournaments. We should certainly have all of the above available and being played at Fight Nights anyway.
A venue fee is defiantly something to think about in the future (anything that would go toward a venue fee would go directly back into the community for PWA fight nights for additional consoles, fighting sticks, so on and so forth). Again we are still building the PWA fight night community so I don?t want to do anything that would bring a negative effect to what we are trying to build at this time
That being said I am going to put together a donation box on the new sign up table I will have there for next Tuesday (again all donations go direct toward the PWA community and helping support the growth of it).
Also remember if we start to get bigger turnouts the option for once a week is still open. It is never good when a venue closes down but if Souper Bowl does close its doors we would be more than happy for those players to join us and the travel time would not be far (if they are meeting in Lowell).
Now onto other news, I am finishing up the second pedestal and just acquired a new HD LCD projector along with another 37 in Sony flat screen CRT with Component inputs.
fun games Tuesday night, thanks for having us lawrence
As for holding a PWA tournament I suggest starting out bi-monthly. That way you can build hype/get the word out there for longer periods of time between events. After a few tourneys the PWA name and player base will be established enough to consider a monthly tournament. Though this is only my take on it, many ppl like monthly tourneys especially in the summer months when the weather is nice and people are out of school.
All good CP, you guys are fam, it was my pleasure. Certainly appreciate the advice as well, it won’t be wasted.
Thanks for the update Adam, and it looks like everyone is on the same page regarding venue fees and tournaments. It would be wise to start planning for our first by starting with an official date and filling in the blanks from there. I do like the idea of bi-monthly to start, since too many can have the opposite effect in attendance. What say the rest?
As an aside, Souper Bowl will not be in play Wednesday 5/18, but Tom was kind enough to give us a shoutout as an alternative for that night. We may see some more players come through on the 17th as a result and I was thinking of having a Wednesday Salt Mines if people from the Souper Bowl are more comfortable with the usual Wednesday time slot, but only if interest is shown of course.
Shouldn’t we work on getting more then ten people there before we start discussing venue fees. Im not trying to be a negative nancy but liek tounramnet are one thing and i think they will have much more draw then fight night but im def not sure i would want to have to pay a venue fee to play against only a few players (just saying again not trying to start no fights)
Good shit CP nice couple sets -_- Asian tom too good anto air demon also nice sets
And that’s the point. It was meant to gauge interest and feedback to assess when and if it would be a good idea to instill a fee. As we have all agreed now isn’t the time so we moved on to what IS the proper next step and that is a tournament. As you mentioned it would have a positive attendance effect on our fight nights going forward and totally agree. I really believe that we are more prepared from both a venue and setup stand point than any other scene on our immediate vacinity. There really isn’t a comparison to be had. It’s just no one has seen it and had a chance to experience it for themselves. Once they do however it should be a no brainer to want to come back. At least I think it would be. We have had good showings for the fight nights thus far and more than ten people the first couple of times, you left early both times:razzy:.
my understanding is that the place is setup for comcast internet, and potentially with wireless throughout the place but I don’t know if there are any ethernet ports in the room we use. somebody PM Adam.
then you can’t count cause we’ve had about 18 people in total each time. /discussion
moving onward, I actually went into training mode in ssf4 this morning. Been watching a lot of CS2 vids as well. can’t wait for that update to hit the ps3.
CS2: so much corner and “wall” carry focus or am I wrong? Seems like a 2D tekken haha. Lots of wall bouncing too. Did they change the combo system or is it the same and special/normal move properties changed?
i think laurence fell asleep trying to do noel’s challenges last night.
the mechanics are different now, no more wall bounces unless you are in the corner, with most characters. certain characters can get wall bounces off of a counter hit.
certain things like instant blocking are also less rewarding so you have to be able to ib block strings, rather than just ib’ing one hit and doing a command grab or dp.
yeah i’m very interested to see how the ib frame advantage reduction affects tager’s ability to do… anything in some matchups. Word on the street is that the psn is back for the NE area AND the cs2 patch is out for the ps3. so when i get back home from portland this afternoon i’ll be sure to hit it up today some time. really looking forward to PWA this tuesday. I’ll be bringing my ps3 and two sticks again. Might be a big turnout since there will be no SB or GU (tuesday) this week.
