New Goukens: Ask a question get an answer

i know why it would be true for me.
i’d be so pissed i was fighting yun that i’d miss all my shit.

I think Gaku is on to something. I’ll check again later. I might not be blocking long enough. Will lab as soon as possible.

Edit: After doing what Gaku suggested, I was able to block Yun’s U1. All is right with the world. Thanks guys! Sim’s U1 still trades though. @iam: you’re right man. Frame data doesn’t lie.

I realized I was still confused over a pretty basic part of this game yesterday: How do you beat someone’s throw if you know they are going to use one.

For example I found that I can get good players to consistently tech throw after I do a cross up J.LK on wakeup. So now that I know they are going to tech/crouch tech, how can I use that to my advantage?

I’m aware of one way, which is using LP Kongo to catch a crouch tech. That works awesome! I’ve also just done neutral jump, but I can’t come down fast enough to hit them. Are there any other ways to beat out throw?

cl.st. mp > whatever you want.

Well ANY frame trap is why frame traps are what they are. They get you to push buttons when you dont have frame advantage. Throws are a big part of this category because everyone has to guard against throws in some form or fashion, whether it be cr teching or just pushing throw. So I guess to answer your question, frame trap the hell out of them. Jump in normally or by dive kick, cr.lpx1 or two then cr.hp or f.st.mp… do lp palm…OR figure out what normal they’re are teching with and use the appropriate kongo. In short, you beat throw by hitting them. They cant block if they’re pushing stuff lol

Actually my frametrapping is pretty strong, especially with ST and C. fierce punch. The tactic just seemed pretty basic to me. But with throw I feel like my moves are going to get grabbed by them… I think that’s what I don’t understand. I was under the impression that if I did a Cl.st. MP they would grab me before I hit them…

if they are a crouch-techer, you can low kongo.
those more knowledgeable in the gouken matchup will probably be wary of the low kongo, and are more likely to stand-throw for the tech and to beat kongo, and correct me if I’m wrong, but then you should be able to either backdash to punish or st.mk X lp.palm to punish.

It’s common to NJ to determine which they are doing.

The frame trap of close strong(+4 on block) to any 5 or 6 frame normal should beat any throw attempt(though 6f needs to be frame perfect or you could get thrown out. If they are just blocking they might be delaying the push to get it in the later tech frames and you’ll need to delay the frame trap or use one with a bigger gap, these are ofcourse vulnerable to fast normals.

A backdash will not lead to a punish(27f backdash vs 24f throws(28f in the case of our backthrow) NJ works better vs command throws as it’ll then lead to a full punish.

he’s talking about j.lk to throw and having trouble figuring out what to do about standing tech people. I think he’ll have to get to the lab to figure out his frameadvantage after the j.lk before we can give solid advice.

so you’d have to backdash from +8 to get a cr.lk? that doesn’t seem right.

If both are started simuktaneously then thatll happen. If you do get a punish its probably cause they threw real late(during invincible or airborne frames of the backdash) ormaybe they pushed a button after the throw.

What is the best thing to do after a backthrow if you don’t have Ultra? I usually go for heavy tatsu but that sometimes I miss and then they quick stand and punish me super hard for it. Are there any other options? Or is tatsu the best one?

Hard knockdown setups with 2 hit j mp cr hk, lp fb cr hk, or resets setups with st cl hp to demon flip.

But for damage hk tatsu is usually the one. It’s my personal go to.

Better damage option: Single hit j.MP to EX Tatsu, but it costs a bar. Sadly not worth as much as it was before backthrow nerf, but if you need that extra 40 damage it’a nice.

Welcome to Gouken. Don’t Miss.

i’m completely new to gouken, i usually play guile
what are his bnb’s?
which of his normals are safe/AA?
option selects?
and best punish combo?
appreciate it

After playing gouken for a couple of months I’ve been improving a little bit. One thing that I have found out is that with gouken you must learn to tech throws consistently, sadly, that’s my weakest point.
Any help on how to train myself to be better at teching throws?

Tech it to the rhythm of your opponents attacks… it’s a lot tougher online b/c of lag or whatever… but that’s usually the best method.

Also knowing how long certain attacks keep you in block stun for a is a good to know as well.

thanks! this is great

Def what IAM said. The way I used to train defense was to go into training, put the cpu on cpu and just defend for like a hour at a time. Pick a shoto so they blow you up. You WILL get blown up because the cpu responds to your button inputs but its cool. The longer and longer you can go without taking too much damage or getting thrown, the better you will get. You could do the same thing online in endless but people will get mad at you for not fighting.
