New Goukens: Ask a question get an answer

Great answers. Thanks Climaxter. Found the piece of advice about the psychology of long combos especially interesting because its so often the case that I freak out when I’m in some long chain.

Have a third question:

There’s many times when I find myself in the second round and have landed EX senku with 2 bars of meter to ex cancel, but don’t have Ultra 1 to land. I would like to learn some tricky resets or some new options to use. I was trying the Dash x2, Jump MK as Kaoculus mentioned above but its not too reliable. I’ve used the EX Cancel > J.MP (2nd hit) > S.MK > LK Demon Flip > DF Grab, which is pretty nifty but isn’t that safe.

What are some good resets I can use to keep the attack going and lead to stun on the opponent?

I’ve been experimenting similarly with this. I’ve been trying dash > j.mp (1 hit) > mp.fb (or maybe it’s lp.fb…I forget) > sweep which leaves you able to dive on their wake up but it’s not a reset and sometimes the sweep whiffs…it seems character dependent or at least bumblefingers dependent. After the fb, I have seen people use cr.mp xx hk dive which is cool looking and all but as you have said, isn’t that safe. Perhaps after the cr.mp, cancel into lp.fb to catch a shoryuken or someone trying to jump out?

Watch this example here of the cr.mp reset. It starts at around 4:30:

Also, anything by phunkism is always good to watch:

And there’s a really interesting idea here at around 3:40 where you double dash>st.lp>dash under to confuse your opponent. I suggest watching the whole vid though because it’s actually pretty stylish:

From those you can get a good idea of what might work for you.

Ooooo that that J. MP > C.MP > Demon flip grab is PRETTY! Especially after fireball. Gonna have to incorporate it.

Also think that dash under will be realllly effective. Thanks.

I’m a huge phunkism fan and also that third video is in my favorites. Dubstep drop + Gouken’s demon flip grab = get me some tissues.

Heh. I’m an old school techno head…been spinning since 95ish. I was skeptical about dubstep but I’m coming to appreciate it’s raw, dirty sound. Anyway, that’s for a different thread…or forum.

these vids were pretty sexy. i’m gonna have to make one now. it’s been so long since i’ve upped a match.

I’m just filled with questions this week.

Does anybody Kara Gouken’s Focus attack with S.HK? I do it with all my throws, I feel like it would be good to get a few extra pixels on the edge of my foot sometimes, and people wouldn’t be expecting it. Is this common for very high level Goukens?

I never really tried although it would give you a half step more reach…I usually use kara hadoken during fireball wars and sometimes for grabs.

Demon flip dive kick into close standing medium punch is not a block string. At least, not from MOST angles. IIRC it’s not a block string at all for any character with a three frame reversal. If I’m wrong on this, then I’m pretty sure the only time it would be is if the DF dive kick is very shallow and is blocked somewhere at the knees or lower. This should also be true for dive kick into close standing fierce or crouch fierce.

I’ve tested this in training mode before. Try the shallow example I just mentioned above just to be sure. But, I’m almost positive the only guaranteed block string from a blocked DF dive kick is close standing medium kick xx low punch palm.

Crouch or close standing fierce can be masked out of after the dive kick. Also, the fireball can be mashed out of during startup if its cancelled into from close standing fierce, crouch fierce, or close standing medium kick. I believe it can even be mashed out of after a close standing or crouching jab. All of this is because while Gouken’s fireball recovery is better than most shotos, his startup is not. I believe it’s slower than normal? Also, the block stun on his normals is generally low compared to most characters while his hit stun is fairly higher than normal.

I always kara focus unless I know for sure I’m in range of a normal. It’s such a valuable tool against players who really know their max ranges on pokes.

I also use Kara fireball, and kara super a lot.

I could just imagine the stupid things that would come out on the screen if I tried to kara super…I think Gouken would actually press pause, turn to the screen and say to me, “It’s no use…dumbass” LOL. I can do some things really well but anything that involves blazing reaction with lots of motion and button timing gives me dickfingers.

Thanks for the great advice guys. I’m getting better as a result, making the old man look like a champ.

Another question: What are some instances where you should use DJ.HK’s ability to land quicker than the opponent thinks? I usually just follow it with a sweep because most people will see me in the air and assume I’m going to hit em high but then come down quick and knock their asses to the ground. I know there has to be some more mindgamey stuff I can be doing.

To clarify I’m using DJ. HK when I’m doing a crossup usually, then whiff with the HK, land early and sweep.

Yeah, that’s good to make them stand and if you exepecf them to tech it sets you up perfectly for counter hit st. Mp. This is like the holy grail mix up in the mirror match.

Nice. Wish I knew that before I tried my first real mirror match. Realized I have no idea how to defend against Gouken’s shenanigans. Oh how the tables have turned

Speaking of mirror match, I can’t find the thread about how to fight Gouken! Any one know where this is?

Also just quickly, I’m finding it really hard to go from blocking a palm rush to punish with C.HP > Senkugushoha. I read this was possible, but I just can’t get the motion in fast enough. How do you punish a blocked Senku or EX Senku?

We never created the mirror match thread, I thought it would spill the beans too easily for the lurkers :).

However that’s the only way to truly learn Gouken, bc it exposes your weaknesses with the character very quickly. It also shows you how other people use his strengths and hide his weaknesess. I played with some of the top Goukens when I was new to him in Vanilla and it instantly changed life with Gouken.

That one mix up we discussed is very good on Gouken, once you really understand “why” it will take your game to a new level. Trust me.

i’m starting to like mirror matches again since i’m learning stuff almost every week. especially watching infiltration use gouken.

Not sure where you read that but I wouldn’t try that too often…you are plus 6 frames if he hits you deep…and cr.hp has a 6 frame startup so you need be frame perfect on your punish (maybe also need to block standing?) or you are dashing into your own trouble. If he doesn’t hit deep, you won’t even be able to cancel the cr.hp. It might even whiff completely…palm is a good poke against people who don’t have great reversals. In the same light as iam, I’ll let you experiment with what are better options rather than explain to the whole world the best ways to punish Gouken.

It’s really not horribly hard with some practice in training mode dude. And I don’t mean that condescendingly. Start off by using Ryu because he has a ton of links that can be plinked.

Crouch jab --> sweep, crouch medium punch --> sweep, crouch medium --> crouch medium --> sweep, crouch medium --> crouch fierce, etc.

You’ll know you’ve succeeded on training when you have seen the two buttons you plinked with, over the one button you wanted to come out like this:

.

I’ll explain a good way to start: try plinking crouch medium punch into crouch medium punch via your middle finger on medium, and your pointer finger in jab. Literally “roll” both fingers onto the button they’re assigned to, one after the other on a quick split second motion.

Start that way. Once you have it down, you’ll easily be able to do Kara super. I do it with jab, but it can also be done with medium punch.

When doing kara fb, are you supposed to press kick then motion then punch or motion then kick>punch?
