I don’t remember recieving a pm on this, from time to time i get pm’s about things and i do my best to take care of it. There are a lot of layers to the board, so you probably won’t get a great response from going directly to the supermods, they have like 10 forums to police and i have 1, they probably get PM’ed about every little thing people see. I can’t ban people tho… yet!
poets against the war
LAURA BUSH CANCELS SYMPOSIUM ON “POETRY AND THE AMERICAN VOICE” RATHER THAN HEAR POEMS WHICH SPEAK OUT AGAINST THE WAR
“And it’s madness
to ask poets to celebrate,
when people can’t even
breathe deeply
for fear of war’s imminence” – Gregory Orr, “refusing”
PORT TOWNSEND, WA; WASHINGTON, DC – On January 19, Founding Editor of Copper Canyon Press, poet Sam Hamill – who had received an invitation from First Lady Laura Bush to attend a poetry Symposium on “Poetry and the American Voice” scheduled for February 12, 2003 – responded by circulating an email to poets around the world.
He wrote that “Only the day before I had read a lengthy report on George Bush’s proposed ‘Shock and Awe’ attack on Iraq, calling for saturation bombing that would be like the firebombing of Dresden or Tokyo, killing countless innocent civilians. I believe the only legitimate response to such a morally bankrupt and unconscionable idea is to reconstitute a Poets Against the War movement like the one organized to speak out against the war in Vietnam.”
Asking poets to speak up “for the conscience of our country” Hamill called for poems to be included in an anthology which he would present to the White House on the afternoon of the Poetry Symposium.
“Please join me in making February 12 a day when the White House can truly hear the voices of American poets,” he requested.
Over 2,000 poets – including Hayden Carruth, Yusef Komunyakaa, W.S. Merwin, Philip Levine, Grace Paley, Galway Kinnell, Gregory Orr, Marilyn Hacker, John Balaban, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Adrienne Rich – sent poems to Hamill in response to his call.
But their works will not be heard at the White House. Laura Bush has postponed the symposium on the “Poetry and the American Voice”, which had a focus on Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes and Walt Whitman.
“While Mrs. Bush respects and believes in the right of all Americans to express their opinions, she, too, has opinions, and believes that it would be inappropriate to turn what is intended to be a literary event into a political forum.” the NEW YORK TIMES quotes Noelia Rodriguez, the first lady’s press secretary, as
saying.
A website – http://www.poetsagainstthewar.org – has been set up and plans “to publish every poem by every poet who wishes to contribute as a public witness for peace.”
“The war is ours, now, here, it is our republic facing its own betraying terror. And how we tell the story is forever after,” Ursula K. Le Guin wrote in “American Wars,” the poem she sent Sam Hamill to be presented at the White House symposium.

Why can’t the artsy people be for a little violence once this century :). Oh wait then they would be rappers!

here’s a good article about that too (via msnbc):
** Back to Iraq: Pop culture goes to war over peace **
As the United States ramps up for possible conflict, musicians
and other creatives have staked out different positions on the
looming war, some at odds with the arts historically pacifist
tendencies.
Thanks!
Hey kids! We all know that the Bush family is completely made up of crack heads and wimps. First Lady Bush would rather her own opinions be upheld and honorated rather than that of objectioners. Wait a sec, what opinions…oh yeah, thats right, Bush does the “thinking” for them both. Though how you can think with a skull full of nuts and bolts is beyond me.
I swear I have a touch of the flu. I was goin hoarse Monday, and when I woke up Tuesday I couldn’t talk, and I could barely move. I just ate my first meal in 2 days today, and I couldn’t breathe most of yesterday. I was running a fever for a little while yesterday until I took some Theraflu. God, that stuff tastes godawful (even with a little bit of sugar that they say you can add) but it works. So I’m still a little hoarse but I can breathe better.
Satomi, you have seen the light man. I’m happy to see you’ve picked her up. If you haven’t already, play her with Doom since that’s her best trap person and they can run battery for someone like Storm or Cable. I may actually go dressed as her again for the upcoming tournament but I haven’t decided yet. I don’t have the right colored coat (like blue or green) or hat, but I made due with what I had the first time in sweltering June heat, so I think I can do it again.
Yes, people thank you for more conformation that Dick Cheney is secretly running the country and accidentally let Laura Bush’s batteries charge up. When ever they or anyone else in the family’s charge up something stupid either happens or comes out their mouth. In Dubya’s case it’s a diagnosis of chronic recharge. His batteries are like the Energizers old commercials: They keep going, and going, and going, and going…
Rubes
Rubes: You might not be the only one. I’m thinking about cosplaying myself, but in the summer when Otacon rolls around. I’m thinking of either going as Strider Hiryu or Hotsuma from Shinobi. Here’s a pic of him.
are you having the costume professionally made? or are you putting it together yourself? (whichever one you decide to do) just curious
not much going on here. thought i’d stop by and say hi to everyone before I go to work.
later, Ang
Ang: That’s a very good question. A lot of people have told me that I should get the Hotsuma one done professionally because it is somewhat more intricate and more difficult to duplicate because there’s a lot of dark parts to the costume and I haven’t gotten pictures of Hotsuma where I can study all of it while Hiryu’s is pretty easy to study and base a costume on. If I can get it done my somebody, that’d be great although it probably means a burning hole in my wallet . Do you know anyone that does costumes professionally? Actually, I should shop around in my hometown. I’m pretty sure that there’s somebody out there.
Personally I would definitly have that professionally done. There looks to be alot of pieces that if you tried your own hand at it they would have you cussing until you decided to scrap it all.
A bit of advice - to save some money on getting it done by a seamstress or professional, go to a fabric store (like a Hancocks) and ask if they have sewing “helpers” or “advisors” to recommend for helping you with a clothing project. Or ask if they have a sewing/alterations advertisement board that seamstresses around town have placed their names, phone # and services offerred on. My local Hancocks has one that advertises both professional and amatuer seamstresses, that you might be able to cut a deal with. You can call them, meet with them and get an idea of how much it’ll cost and how long it’ll take to make your ideal costume. Tell them your on a student budget, and many of them will be understanding and work out a plan with you and advise you on what materials you will need to purchase for them to work on. I would reccommend always buying the material yourself so they dont add on the time taken to find/buy the material on your bill. You can also ask for referrences/previous customers to call and ask them how well a job they did.
If you decide to go to a more established tailor/seamstress with a store in town, be SURE to ask if they have a student discount. Some of them realize that people like us have plays, school shows, etc, and will take a percentage off for us. The more complicated the costume, the more they’ll charge of course.
If you get a better picture with more details, you can also look at it and decide what you can do yourself, and what you cant. You can have the seamstress work on a cheap, basic costume for you and add the detailing on yourself. If there’s any metal pieces, plastic pieces - check with a local art/design/jewelry/metal working class in a high school or even college to see if theres any students there who would like to take it on as an art project for a grade or offer a modest price for the work. Offer to let them use pictures of it for their portfolios. You can also check for amatuer blacksmith groups/clubs for stuff if you want to go that far. I know my jewelry classmates did stuff for other people to sell to them and some of the art kids I know in college are doing stuff for the SCA kids. Ang would probably know more stuff about that though, since she’s a fabulous art babe herself. Please feel free to correct me if Im wrong babe.
I need to decide on a person to cosplay before Project A-kon. I bought a pair of homemade wrap-around martial arts/Renn fest pants at a thrift store the other day and figured out how to make my own off them. Im thinking about a Gulity Gear X2 character. Ben just got the game yesterday and already Im enjoying it greatly. I got distracted by an Osbourne marathon today tho. Christ, gotta love them. They make me look sane and functional. And that makes me happy!!
my suggestion if you’re going to hire someone from art colleges is to go to their Fiber & Design departments first. here at the k.c. art inst. the fiber department was ALL about costumes. but visit their studios for a week or so, to get a feel for what kind of craftsmanship they’ve developed; if nothing else consult the instructors of that department as well to see who’s the better tailor of the class. occassionally a sculpture student will also be doing some costume/fiber work as well; and they could definitely handle the metalworks portion of your outfit.
that’s all i can think of for now. I’ll mention your idea to my art friend Melanie; she’s in Chicago and teaching at a Design school this year. If she comes up with any more suggestions I’ll be sure to pass them along to you Erik.
Random Hello.
Hey Mycah. Long time no message or anything. What have you been up to? Comiendote el arroz con pollo?
happy hallmark industry day
my best friend (matt) is getting married tomorrow. mmmmm…cake…champagne…presents.
i’m just greatful to NOT be working at a flower shop this year; last year i got so sick of roses and gaudy arrangements. shudders @ the memory
Hey gals and guys.
Misha, I’ll be sure to come to you when I really need some design advice on a costume. I haven’t really gotten into dressing up but the Ruby costume is looking more and more attractive to do right now. I just have to assemble every thing and see if I can find my eye patch. I think I lost it somewhere in my room.
Angie, congrats to your friend. I wish we were doing something that special but all we’re doing is going to the IHOP when Marcus gets off from work. He doesn’t get off until 11 and I’ve still got to go shopping (I get paid tonight).
Not to mention his birthday is Monday so I’ve got to get at least 2 gifts. I love buying gifts for him and I try to make his birthday special because he really isn’t into making it a big deal. I have spent the last 5 years with him on his birthday, with the exception of his 18th birthday because we were in school and didn’t let me know ahead of time. Otherwise we have spent them together. On his 19th birthday was when I told him how I felt about him, so this makes year number 3 that we’ve been together off and on. We’ve got so many anniversaries that it’s hard to keep up with.
Wish me luck shopping tonight:)
Rubes
I dread Valentine’s Day. So my remedy is going to the arcade with some friends to play some Marvel. There’s supposed to be some sort of showdown though.
Hahaha. That show totally owns. Too bad Aimee totally refuses to be on that show tho.
Sups to everybody.
Hello, Valentines day was fun, and I am going to get really drunk for St. Patrick’s day.
Misha, tell Ben that I watched and enjoyed the badass movies of his people “Hard Boiled, A Better Tomorrow, etc”…
So he must watch the badass movie of MY people. “The Boondock Saints.”
I think he’ll enjoy it.
Someone please kick my ass. I don’t care if you have travel across country to do it, but someone please do it.
Ok, being the ass that I can be sometimes, I picked a fight with Marcus Friday night and wound up making him mad at me. I stuck my foot in my mouth even though I know he was trying to make the best of a horrible situation. Yes, I feel stupid now because only a sucky person would be horrible on the one day where love is supposed to mean something and the other person was trying really hard. I now suck ass.
Instead of trying to be happy that he brought me a big teddy bear and a box of Hershey Kisses (my drug of choice and what I asked for) and wonderful card that basically said he was perfectly happy with me, I decided that IHOP at 2 in the morning was crap and went off on him at some point in the evening. I was frustrated about only getting to see him for a couple of hours that night, having to go to the IHOP that evening instead of someplace nice (like we did last year), and having to work earlier that day when I would have rather been home with him. Stupid, stupid me decides to take it out on him with some stupid question that I can’t even remember now. Also I felt like my gifts were crap this year since I had to wait until the last minute to get them (I didn’t get paid until Friday). I got him GGX2 and Smash Bros. Melee, whichever he wanted to open first was his Valentine’s gift and the other was his birthday gift (his birthday is Monday).
Now, I’m sitting here trying to figure out to get my foot out of my mouth and not look like a supreme ass. I’m just not used to him being so kind towards me. I 'm used to him being mean and not caring about the things I care about and how I feel. Now that he geniunely cares, I don’t know what to do. It feels weird.
Well, since my Valentine’s Day sucked, how about the rest of you? Please, someone find something to say to make me smile and tell me that you had a wonderful day unlike me.
