New body; same moves

They did start to change them up in later games, Hanzo even got a teleport move if I remember right. But yeah, WH1 was a HUGE SF2 ripoff, but then again, who wasn’t back then?

But SNK has a long history of transplanting moves. Hell, didn’t Kyo’s special moves back in '94 remind anyone else of another SNK character?

I’d still take Vanessa over than Rick Strowd, even though she jacked that boy for all his moves. And poor Ron, I knew that fool well, Dou Lon just walked in.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure was first released in 1987, so I think they did manage to introduce Dio Brando long before WH 2 saw the light of day.

And i thought i was the only one who thought Mai Shinrinui is copy of Chun Li becuase they both have boobs. :wow:

Archetype needs to be your keyword.

The II series was the best at this, because they have more playable and viable <- archetypes than alot of the newer games. Tekken suffers because they have some great archetypes, but alot of the other characters seem to be essentially the same or like a spin-off(yes i know they aren’t the same, just like Ken and Ryu aren’t the same). This is also a reason why a3 is a great game, that gets overlooked because it also introduced some new and great mixed archetypes.

A game like ST was just right, because the game’s features didn’t overshadow the game’s archetypes, making you rely completely on universal features way more than the characters’ innate abilities. This was something that made the DOA series suffer, because the universal features overshadow everything else. For you RPG only players out there, look at this analogy like FF6 -> all the characters have all of their own abilities, but in the end the shit doesnt matter because everyone could learn ultima, and thus just spam ultima. The uniqueness of the selection took a backseat and just doesn’t matter, straight up.

Some of the “New Challengers” kind of blurred the lines though between some of the archetypes though, they are sort of hybrid types. Like Zangief to T.Hawk. Ken/Ryu to Akuma.

Of course i’m probably wrong on some of the grouping though.

What’s up with 3s? No Vega archetype, for one, and to top it off alot of the other archetypes are unplayable because they can’t win. AAAAND there’s a universal gameplay option that takes away character uniqueness. We all know what it is.
HOWEVER, the III series brought in some really good archetypes though. Like Urien(because of Aegis), Q, etc.

Alpha series:

New archetypes in ALL of the Final Fight characters. i’d say that Sodom is the only one of them that isn’t completely original.

Characters like Guy and Rolento make the alpha series what it is. Adon, Rose, Sakura, Gen, a3 Cody, were also great Archetypes that were present. Even a3 Dan, and Juni who is what Cammy SHOULD be IMO.

Kof has a ton of archetypes too, too many to list actually. But the game hurts itself because some of the universal things work too well for everyone, i.e. hyper hop CDs etc. but some of the really great archetypes that stick out in my mind would be K’ and Chang.

You know what though, Guilty Gear is really good with playable archetypes.

Don’t mind me, just trying to derail into better discussion than what was previous.

:rofl::rofl:

even though yang > yun? so does that make yang useless unless he’s fighting yun?

err… anyway…

don’t say that shit, because 3S is NOT marvel. Saying anything other than SSMC is usless in marvel (outside of being an assist) can be accurate, but even then, not entirely. Seriously… SvC:Chaos… now that’s logical.

Ash is pretty much Guile/Remy, and very femmy.

Uh, except he didn’t say any of that shit. All he said was 3s makes his drills and stretching useless.

Redundant.

Namco sez : ALL UR BASE ARE BELONG TO TEKKEN

Now, now.

All y’all can pull the panties out of your crack. Pretty much all my hate on any fighting game is joking.

I don’t dislike MvC2, even though I infamously said that it “doesn’t actually know what buttons you’re pressing, it just knows you are pressing buttons and spits out moves.” And constantly say that there are but two tiers (the Magneto, Storm, Sentinel and Cable tier and the horse shit tier).

I play plenty o’ 3S, with Alex as my main, even though I constantly say, again, there are but two tiers (the Chun, Yun Ken tier…and the horse shit tier).

And I’ve said that GG players are “teh anime phags” even though I play GG.

The only games I haven’t hated on are SNK games (and I’d hate on them if everyone else wasn’t already hating on them), VF (since I’ve got no frickin clue about anything in VF) and Tekken (same as VF).

So yeah, I love all fighting games. Except the Art of Fighting games. They suck.

::keeps Ryo Sakazaki avatar::

I always thought Alex was like a new school Alpha Sodom. Dash punching, weaker grabs, very little anti air.

tekken is the 3D fighter for those who failed at 2D

With regards to the SF3-SF2 character similarities, I’m probably stating the obvious here, but pretty much every unique aspect of the various characters were copy-pasted into various members of the cast from each game.

SF2->Alpha doesn’t really count, since much of the SF2 cast was present in Alpha (excluding Fei, T. Hawk, Dee Jay, etc). But between Alpha->3, alot of stuff carried over from the characters. Be it Raishin Mahaken taking after Gen, Alex’s 4c6K taking after Sodom’s charge and his 2c8K taking after Bison, Yang getting Fei Long’s 3 hit special, and so on and so forth.

Yeah, this shows up in SNK games as well. But so what?

It’s true, though.

T. Hawk really suffers from not only his ridiculous height–he’s only person in the entire series that’s taller than Sagat–but from that fact that uses his fucking face to attack.

You know need a better moveset when Balrog’s quip of “blocking with your face” actually applies. T. Hawk just needs to copy Vega (Claw) and then he might get some autoguard frames.

…The ugly bastard.

Heh.

Remy was my main in a while, but I have completely agree.

He’s also completely paradoxical like Iori.

“Oh, I hate fighting so much that I’m going to beat your ass for pissing me off even though you’re not related to my problems. Woe is me.”

…Butt I like them there.

grabs boxing hands

Do I really have to break these to keep you from grabbing at straws?

How the fuck are they even remotely the same?

Sodom uses weapons while Alex uses only his body.

They don’t both have a “dashing punch”. Hell, neither of them punches. Alex uses his elbow; Sodom uses his katana or his jutte. Alex’s is barely safe, and that’s not even taking parry into consideration; from the right distance, outside of Alpha Counters, hitting with Sodom’s Demon Scrape is pretty safe with either weapon.

Speaking of lacking anti-airs, Alex has the universal option of parry, his knee, his EX Knee, and fucking Boomerang Raid. Sodom’s Demon Scrape is what I use to knock people out of the air most of the time even though also has a move specifically for counter anti-air moves (that pretty much has the active frames of P-Groove, which is sort of what 3S parry system should have been but I digress).

As for “weaker grabs”, um…Sodom’s grab are rather damaging, especially the blockable one where he just drags you across the floor and friction burns the hell out of you. His super grab is not Gief, but much better than T. Hawk’s, who shtick already just comes down to grabbing since T. Hawk just sucks so much, or even Birdie’s. Alex just has relatively normal grabs with even easier motions to complement his vain attempt at “completeness”.

Apropos his “completeness”, that’s why differ so much: Alex was made to be those “jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none” type of character while Sodom was made with the “character so quirky that his attacks are actually surprisingly effective” archtype ala Faust and Zappa (though no really that weird outside of his gibberish Engrish).

I have to agree that looks like it’s the case a lot of the time, even though I’ve played Tekken (3) myself.

I’m not sure where the relation is to the graphics, but Tekken is definitely fit for those who couldn’t manage to think while they played 2D (SF-esque) games. In Tekken, all you need is to memorize the maximum hit-number combo, and mash away…

Greed from Rumble Fish is one of the more obvious Terry Bogard ripoffs:

QCF+lp projectile: Power Wave
QCF+hp projectile: Power Geiser
QCB+K: Crack Shoot.

Sadly he doesn’t have a Rising Tackle or Power Dunk move :frowning:

FAIL.

It won me arcade mode too too many times…

DOUBLE PENETRATION OF FAIL.

Also why I sold it back to the store…
