Keep in mind that I don’t use Anji. This is all based on observations of people using Anji.
With Anji, I think there are 2 main reasons. First is that no matter if the opponent eats or blocks the butterfly, the 2nd part of the butterfly will activate. This makes it more easier to do lockdown with Anji. Also, it seems to make it easier for his lockdown to work in the corner. In #R, unless you had excellent spacing control, if the opponent blocks the butterfly in the corner, the butterfly followup would fly offscreen making the lockdown useless. In Slash, it seems that it is a lot easier to achieve lockdown in the corner.
Second, Anji has a new followup to Fuujin and it looks pretty crazy since if it hits, it knocks the opponent down and creates a bounce so Anji can followup with an air combo of his choosing. Also, people were just getting hit by this move over and over again while they are trying to counter the move which suggests to me that it either has really high priority or maybe it has autoguard.
New Fuujin followup has autoguard. Low hits still eat it up, but space yourself far enough away and it doesn’t really matter, I guess. Move is also hella hard to jump away from, and you can do the Fuujin followups even if the Fuujin whiffs now, so the new attack makes for awesome space control.

yeah that’s right. I mentioned arario and jop because they’ve been playing jack from the start. I think sanford has too. beating steve, nina, bryan with jack actually took some skill in t5.
But then you got ricky who’s a top tier whorefemale user (storm in mvc2, chun li in 3s, julia in ttt, nina in t5) going from nina to jack, and justin who was a feng/nina player afaik, going to jack (this is from sabin’s post). random t5 players going to jack for DR.
myself I played ling a lot, met some good law players (rip) started using him, found out a lot of people in my area play law, better than me, so I went to jack. when DR comes out, a nobody like me will already be more generic as there will be more jack players. gotta change characters.
Nothing wrong with play a popular character if you truely like them. I might just play some Jack. He is straight up, if you have good fundementals you can be very successful with him. And most importantly, he is a fun character to use.
yeah ain’t nothing wrong with playing a character you like, i like using jack vs good law and steve players that will actually attack you and shut down your offense, cuz it tests your blocking and reaction.
but then if he’s gonna be number 1, there comes the argument that, fun=winning, not about the character. lots of bandwagoners don’t care about characters and such, as long as they are top tier, and they win…that’s fun. so it’s like even if i’m not a bandwagon jumper, if jack 5 is number 1, and i play jack, i’ll already be considered one since i’m a nobody aka non top player to begin with.
Wong was a primarily Feng user, with Nina as backup, as if he fucking needed it. =/ He doesn’t touch J5 too much, although Sanford loves him. I dunno, Sanford loves big black robots. lol
I started using J5 shortly after 5.1 came out, since they fucked over Wang, and I started getting him often as Mokujin. =/
NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY would play Sentinel in MVC2 if he wasn’t so damn godlike. Not to be a Jack hater, but some people are playing him solely because he’s top tier. It’s like saying "Character A is boring, uncool, unpopular, and low-tier in Game A. Game B comes along, and although Character A is still boring and uncool, Character A becomes top tier and suddenly becomes popular. Now THAT is hopping on to the bandwagon. Even though there aren’t many Twelve players in 3s, if they had ever made a patch in which he was top tier, than people would play him despite how he was in the previous game.
In other news, I’m kinda believing that Ky is #1 now. Everyone has viable evidence to say why he’s top (as well as Anji), but what suprises me is how everyone was all like “Order Sol is going to BEAST!” and yet here he is, bottom tier (as well as Robo Ky, who suffered from the SF2 Bison syndrome, which means being awesome in one game and trash in the other).
I think people are playing jack mainly cause of his ease of use, even though hes so unsafe lol. even if hes so unsafe you can just play footsies with db+1 all day then df+2 if they start trying to crouch it or ws+1 afterwards if they try to attack. and he has braindead bnb. so easy to play, even a sf player like me (tekken scrub) can whore it out for some wins lol
I know it has been asked before… but noone has answered this question before and I can’t find any information on it… It’s about the changes for Testament. Would really appreciate if someone could explain why he is top-tier now? He was one of the worst before : |.
