Sounds cool. I’m willing to hit San Mateo. Worse comes to worst, I would just go coin. You can alter coinmechs for damn near anything, so if you want to go token and then swap over to nickels/dimes/quarters later you can. Card system you’re kind of stuck with it.
Re: East Bay: Most of the good places have been gone for years. Concord has maybe Q-Zar, which could be the shit if they tweaked their offerings. I think I saw a Tekken 4 in there and either MvC2 or CvS2 in a generic Dynamo cab the last time I was in there. A lot of dance and driving games. I’m pretty sure it was a hot…well, maybe luke warm…spot for beat and rhythm players during the peak of DDR. I mostly go there for Spiderman Pinball now days (one of the few pinballs I can find in this city that is taken care of…plus the game is the fucking shit if you dig pinball)…and the distinct smell of fog machine gas. That place smelled like that the day it opened. Brings back memories.
ok san mateo is fine but there’s nothing here in frisco except sfsu or metreon tilt if that even counts! the hours at sfsu are limited and i work a lot so there’s no chance i can make it there at a reasonable hour. the cost might be higher to open an arcade here but there’s a lot of interest here in sf. i definitely will be there first day wherever it is!
location is very critical in where you put this arcade.
not putting it in SF might be a drag for some people. At least in SF you have a lot of foot traffic and people walking everywhere. so some people who dont even play fighting games might come in and play to waste time. Sf is also accessible by a lot of people and pretty much even distance from all areas.
Not only that, at least people who get bored and want to do something else, there are bars, restaurants and clubs in SF and they are very close by.
Put this Arcade in SF. people from all over the world come to visit the city.
Nima, San Francisco has waaaay higher rent per square footage. Make sure you’re paying $2 or less in this economy. Stay away anything close to $3 a sq. ft.
Nima’s main concern is that if you are going to do THE nor cal arcade you should do it right. San Mateo may cost less, but will it get as much traffic as SF? I’m not saying it should be in SF. I would like it to be. However, the people’s arcade should be located where the people would most consistently go.
If San Mateo’s rent makes up for the people that you’d be missing out on if it had been in SF, please do so. However, Nima does have a point. SF may produce more traffic.
SF may produce better foot traffic, but people from other parts of the Bay Area would hate coming to the city due to toll, traffic, and parking. And I live in the city!
I think SF would produce more traffic because it would attract more casual players and it’s also more central for everyone.
Consider this:
SF has heavy foot traffic/tourists. Horrible parking, loads of money for parking, heavy freaking traffic. Would you guys really handle that every single weekend? I honestly think it poses more problems than it does solutions.
Also, although SF gets foot traffic from all over the world, most of them are usually hanging around Union Square or the Piers. Leasing a space around there is suicide if there’s no guaranteed return, and arcades… seriously, really aren’t a tourist attraction… maybe even just a novel appeal in their perspective. Based on those things, would SF realistically draw more traffic just because more people visit the city?
Honestly, I don’t think so. Just the thought of parking gives me a headache, and traffic is something that will never be resolved.
But would being in San Mateo supply ample foot traffic to make up for the fact that it’s in a less central location? Totoro’s gotta make money and realistically, I doubt the community will be paying most of his bills. It’ll be the average joe from the neighborhood or the wandering person who drops in, in my mind, that’ll supplement most of his profits.
Like our arcade cab probably saw a lot of money from regulars, but realistically, it was the suckers dropping in that were hit with nostalgia that paid the thing off in majority. I mean Jack, Korea, Tanaka and I murdered a lot of scrubbies to pay off 24k O_o…
This statement right here is the truth.
Oh trust me, the location has lots of foot traffic.
Like Myung said in the previous post, there’s a lot of parking, and a lot of good restaurant. Let me talk specifics:
Pho, burgers, pizza, Japanese, Mongolian… just some examples of what is available within WALKING distance. If you’re a culinary adventurer, there’s even a Michelin rated restaurant in the vicinity.
Also within walking distance is a Century Theater… that’s right, if you’re bored, go watch a movie. The vibe of the area is very similar to walking on Castro Street in Mountain View, if any of you guys have been there.
Edit: Forgot to mention Quickly’s is within walking distance too… so for you hoes that love tapioca drinks, that’s another feature the location would have for you. Hoe bags. <3
Alright good location.
Whoa this is gonna be in downtown San Mateo, sexy
imagine this… say the arcade becomes a huge hit and they start having very large tourneys. tourneys so big that people from other states or areas visit. Having the arcade in SF would be ideal cause not only would they come to arcade to play but they have an excuse cause they easily be like " well after the arcade we can cruise around Sf and go to strip clubs and shit"
where as if it was in san mateo people will be like “what the fuck is there to do.” nothing!
anthony seems right about the whole where is there to park and toll and traffic in the city.
The only other reasonable place to put it is in Oakland. San Mateo sucks.
i want it to be in sf so bad!!!
If it becomes a huge hit, I’m sure we’d be able to move it to SF eventually. =]
you want to make an arcade work you cant really target a fairweather niche scene, you have to go where there is action. Putting it in some cheap spot that mainly targets sf heads is a huge coin toss. Putting it in SF while targeting general audience with a decent amount of fighters seems a bit safer imo.
i agree with this guy!!
Time to play a little devil’s advocate…
If it’s THAT big of a tourney, it would probably be held elsewhere. And even then, those kinds of tourneys wouldn’t occur often enough for that to be a major point of consideration. The arcade isn’t catering to people from other states.
While this may be true, putting the arcade in a more expensive spot that targets the general audience (but might not necessarily bring them in) is also a coin toss.
I dunno how true Anthony’s statement is, but they have the right idea. If the arcade is a big hit, they can always move it to a bigger, better location. Let’s see how it works out. Myung’s intent is to open this place for gamers like us, and the location he’s set out seems pretty good for that. Lots of parking, and lots of food around.
But yeah in all honesty, San Mateo and SF both are a little too far to show up more than once a month.
