New Advanced Tactic: Up Canceling

Alright, I stumbled upon this today. First off I’ll give a little background into it. Back around the time of XvSF there was a move called crouch canceling that some chars were able to do such as Wolverine and Rouge. This move let you cancel moves into other moves that usually were unable to link. Basically you would do one move, press down, then do the second move. It tricked the system into thinking you were crouching. This was able to be done in the air during combos or on the ground. Yeah, you would be able to make some nice combos but the big advantage was to not be left open for the opponent to then go ahead and hit you. So basically it eliminates the recovery on moves.

So, now that the spiel is out of the way I’ll go ahead and explain it in TvC. It seems that up canceling is only able to work while in the air. This is because the game will not let you super jump cancel moves on the ground. The best way to use this tactic I have seen is to cancel out moves done with C (heavy moves). For example, say you are Daima? the genie and you do a regular jumping C, he does his hit but he is left open to oncoming attacks since he does not recover until he hits the ground. Right after you do it just hit 8 + any attack button at the same time and it will cancel out. So, basically the game thinks you are double jumping but instead you are keeping yourself at the same height and continuing your combo or even your lock down. Another great way to use it is with dash in air moves. Say your dash in move is blocked, you can just up cancel and do another move to keep the opponent blocking or whatever. This has great potential for infins and it seems that that one Jun the Swan chick might have an infin after all.

Sorry if this makes no sense, it’s 4:15 AM and I’m having insomnia and decided to post this up.

Great find
Are you really going to coin it as “Up cancelling”?

So are you keeping your double jump by doing this? Sounds like it has some good potential!

Reminds me of Rei’s jump cancel hp where he just drops to the floor…

So does the char have to have a double jump to use this? If not, it could be very useful for Alex.

Wonder if this can work on the ground, w/o the jump? Have you also tried mashing back or foward to see if there is some sort of cancel there?

You lose your double jump when you do this. Alex can’t do it.

Yeah, as I thought. Just the same as Rei in HnK. With him you can cancel 236C with u/f+button, doesn’t really do anything just negates the jump. Cool find…

yeah, doin that shit right now with morrigan. dash and hit u+light attack or medium attack and it will cancel immediately into the attack. rush that shit down. now with morrigan though, and ill post this in her thread, but if you dash, and cancel with u+hard attack, she just does what looks like a small hop off the ground, and it does not connect. depending on when you cancel it, you can get the hard attack to connect and you can proceed to combo off it

Damn. Ah well, thanks for the info.

Yes, you lose your double jump for performing this and you can only do it with chars that have a double jump. So yeah, Chun can do it twice at a time. Doesn’t seem like you are able to do it on the ground since you cannot super jump cancel ground moves.

morrigan can up cancel her dash with u+medium attack without actually connecting the medium attack, but you have to do it real fast. its easier with u+hard attack. played with chuns dash with up cancelling a little, but she just jumps up. morrigan actually hops a small bit, but you go right back down to the ground. i guess do to the fact that her dash is a forward + up motion. so you can have someone in the corner, dash in, up cancel with u+hard attack, and immediately go into a low attack combo string, or whatever.

still got much testing, but it seems like she has a special dash, and she might be the one of the few, if not the only character that can cancel her dash the way she can. pressure pressure pressure

I’ll get this edited into the basics guide later when I resort all these threads into their character’s forums. Good stuff, keep it up!

ehhh… I didnt understand your wording (From Mexico) but I already post this on the" The Begining of the End All AKA The Basics Thread** Thread V.3",** I guess we have to make a new post for every new tech? I want my credit back (kidding) **:rofl:

So basically, in laments terms, you cancel a move or the ending animation of a move by tapping up? Just to get it clear.

If that’s the case, I guess its useful to characters who aren’t Megaman and Alex. LOL.

Well, if you tap up then you’re going to double jump. Tap up + the button at the same time to perform this. You CAN tap up and not double jump out of certain moves like if you wait long enough after you do j.5C with the genie guy.

Oh also, it seems that the genie guy does kind of have an infinite, I just have to get my timing better. In corner, j.C xx up cancel xx j.B, land, repeat.

Megaman has double jump AFAIK.

Yep yep. And he has 3 dashes and air dashes.

so does chun li

So by doing so, you still lose your second jump? or do you retain it?

This was evident in all the videos released for character combos in Japan.

If you do a jumping attack, the game allows you to cancel aerials into jumps to ease the extension of combos, but you can also cancel your upward momentum into another attack. So Genie dude can do jumping C and up+jumping C for a 2 hit jump in.

I thought it was old.

EDIT: This is the same way you perform the Karas corner infinite with just B. Jumping B, up+ Instant air dash, B, B. Rinse Repeat. Megaman can land 3 medium kicks as well with this same method.
