Never Used an Arcade Stick - Worth It? - Please read and share your opinions!

Specifically, the HRAP2-SA is probably the best. Though you can also mod a Mayflash or Honcam stick pretty easily, and those are usually compatible with PS2 and PS3.

alright guys, I just got a TE stick. Is there any tips on how to use it efficiently? I find myself to have trouble dashing unless I remove my whole hand from the stick and pick which way to dash and it takes some time.

I also find myself not being able to execute quick motions but when they’re executed slowly, i can sort of pull them off. Also have to press the buttons a little later than usual for the move to come out.

I find the stick to be more fatiguing than the controller lol. I guess my thumbs are kinda trained in the ancient arts of the control pad and are ready for anything.

What kind of motions are you trying to do on the stick? The square gate can really throw people off at first when they try to do quarter-circle motions. Try not to ride the gate and use the feel and sound of the switches being pressed to confirm your inputs. This is particularly useful when I’m trying to do 2 QCF input for ultras when facing right.

It took me about a month to get as good on a stick as I was on pad, though I was never really that great on pad to begin with. I started out with charge characters and learned how to charge buffer, which gave me a good feel for the square gate. You’ll need to spend many hours in training mode, but eventually you’ll get used to dashing left and blocking high without unintentionally jumping back or crouching.

The next step for me is learning to double-tap all of my combo links.

Go for it

So you’ve decided to get yourself a HRAP3.

I don’t know which parts it contains (sanwa, seimitsu or whatever) but it really looks good, in my opinion.

I’m probably not much different than you as far for using an arcade stick. I’ve played with nothin but controllers since the very first Nintendo NES and Sega master system (I’ve played many beat em up’s for consoles, almost all of them) and then, 3 weeks ago, I’ve decided to buy an arcade stick. I was simply tired of playing SF4 with the controller (xbox360 pad) since I sucked balls once I’ve tried to execute great combos like my opponents did against me. I’ve tried so hard to get better on my combos with the pad but it just didn’t work at all.

Now I got an arcade stick. I’ve ordered the TE of madcatz which is already modded with sanwa parts (buttons and joystick). Am I better now than I was with the controller? Hellno!!! Now I even suck more but that’s no big surprise at all. I knew I would suck balls at the beginning but I can see that I’m gettin better with it day by day. If I ever mess up any special attack or combo than it was me who messed it up and not the arcade stick (I had a different feeling about this when I used the controller, though).

To come to an end;
Buying an arcade stick itself will not make you naturelly a better player. It will take you a alot of time to get used to it (maybe weeks or even months…you simply have to start from scratch…you have to train your muscle memory again that you don’t push the wrong buttons) and there will be times when you just want to throw your stick out of the window and makes you want to use the controller again but no matter what…never quit, never give up…just force yourself to use the arcade stick and forget that you have ever played with a controller. At the end you will be happy that you didn’t give up, trust me. You’ll definitely have more controll about your character. It’s worth it, really.
Once you get used to your arcade stick, you would never like to play with a controller again. Alone the use of an arcade stick itself is so much fun. It almost gives you the feeling that you are playing on an arcade machine.
I personally didn’t regret the buy.

Hope it was some help. Now it’s all up to you.

Sincerely,
Ray

I bought it as a fighting game that I could have people over and play. None of my friends can beat me on street fighter unless I go easy on them AND use a character I despise.

I wanted a game that we could all just button mash and have a good time with. I may not keep it though. I still have soul calibur 4 for that.

Well, I main Gouken and secondary Viper, so I’m just trying to get all types of motions down. I’m not one for charge characters but I know it’s much better to use charge character on a stick than pad. I did complete all normal trials with a variety of characters with a variety of movesets (ryu, chun, viper) in order to get used to different motions. Surprising since I never used a stick before until then.

Yeah as soon as I started using the stick I noticed the clicking sound and when testing ingame, I saw that as soon as the sound clicked, that is when the action is registered in the game. So it’s unnecessary to go the full distance on any direction on the joystick.

Oh and man it was hell getting used to using viper on a stick. If I tried to do burning kick I would just high jump backward it was extremely annoying. Question though, should we use the setting for DPad or LS on the arcade stick and what’s the key differences between these two? Also, is there any advantageous grip or finger placement on the buttons or is it all just instinct?

One more thing, forgot to mention that I notice that I have to press the button a lot later than I do on the pad when I do special moves. Maybe it’s just something just starting out until I begin to master stick motions.

Tekken is probably your best bet for that, especially with the new bound system.

i share ur history with playing mostly on consoles but i have to say theres nothing on a stick i cant do on a pad. . i’m sorry, even as a stick owner my self, i have to say if you feel good on a pad play there. if ya wanna try a stick go for it. my personal opinion on pad placers at tourneys is that like you alot of people are told that they have to go stick to do good anywhere. i just dont agree. ive beat stick players ( typing with a beer buzz) with my pad and been beat by pad players on my stick. its all skill. thats my opinion and im sticking to it

I don’t think skill relies on what the player is using. I am still using keyboard and whoop most people’s butt regardless of what they use. But keyboard does limit me to some certain things though. =/

Well, it arrived today. I’ve got the box setting here sealed. The only reason I haven’t opened it is because, while playing a little SC4 last night, I realized that I really like how quiet my fightpads are. I feel like the stick noises are going to really bother me.

I’m also not 100% convinced that I’m going to gain a decent advantage in game play (after training with it for a while even).

I’ll probably have decided by the end of the day.

EDIT: Decided that the stick is just not for me. The funny thing is, I’ve had no trouble pulling off combos with it. I just don’t feel comfortable without my good old 1994 sega relic.

@OP: Respond to my PM please. Thanks!
