Never Shall the God of Thunder Relent! - Ultimate Thor Thread

Yeah, it was crazy. While I was there, I decided to pretty much forgo Marvel so I could get in on Tekken. The few seconds I ended up commentating a match, I get pulled away half way through it to play a Tekken match. So it is what it is. With the personal stuff I was goin’ through that day, I really didn’t care. But anyway, it is what it is.

Thankfully, there was another Thor player there. Dude named Jamal. He ended up on stream, and with me goin’ through the archives right now, he’s pretty okay, considering he plays like 30 different characters at once, and from what I’ve been told, he’s still new to the game. I need to get with him and show him some stuff so he can level up.

A couple of weeks ago, I someone gave me an interesting comment that sorta made me feel special inside, so I took it as a complement. He said he didn’t know Thor could be a good character in the game until he played this dude Potato Salad. I’m thinkin’, “really?” Cuz ya see, I’m used to people underrating my character. That’s fine, but for him to think that Potato Salad’s Thor was good enough for him to respect every other Thor he sees is interesting to me, because I’m the reason Potato Salad picked up Thor as a side team in the first place. Some mad trickle down effect happening.

And it got me to thinking, which is the reason I’m making this post. If you have the means, go to tournaments, go to locals. If you don’t have a scene, make one. If there’s no interest, drive out and find one. It takes two people to play this game. For the longest, it was just me and Potato Salad playing this game on our own. We didn’t even know we had a scene around, so we made due with each other in vanilla. Then when we found out about it, we went to it. Met some good people. Then found out about tournaments. He’s big on going to those. I’m still handlin’ my business around here, and when that’s taken care of, I plan on heading out in the world, too.

While you’re on SRK, check out the forums for your regions. That’s where the real stuff is at. Make a facebook group. Commute. See who’s out there. Travel. If you enjoy playing this game, you’ll really enjoy playing it with more and better people. Yeah, there’s online, but we all know it’s no Tekken or Soul Calibur, so play offline. Get out and go play.

thats cute dj; yeah we thor players need to travel more and test all the supposed matchup knowledge

while we’re at it, i made this anti-phoenix vid for showing what Thor can do everytime to kill a Dark Phoenix, i hate when that ***** body my team

@DJ: I have the means to go to local tournaments, like The Runback at Super Arcade, because I live in Southern California but not the desire. I would rather play the game for fun and play it casually with people than play it for winning money. Its why I’ve only posted videos of my online sessions against random players. So when the opportunity rises for me to travel to Super Arcade during their weekly casuals event every Friday, I’ll go to that. On a side note, I did go to The Runback once last year because I happened to be in the area for something earlier that day and I’m so glad I went because it was a lot fun just being there to watch it live.

@Serp: Excellent video. I was thinking lately what Thor has for anit-Phoenix tech and its good to see what he can do against her. It also gave me an idea for another anti-Dark Phoenix tech that I wanted to try so I’ll make a video for that and post it.

Fellow Asgardians!

I have a question, I apologize if this has been asked before. Who are some of the best Thor players? Im looking to matches to Watch online, to pick things up from. So far all i know is Royal flush, and master doom man(saw him fight maxamilian). so any one you guys can recommend (heck even yourselves) would be extremly helpfull.

Thanks!

That’s one of the issues with Thor. Not many people play him at all, so it’s very rare that he gets to get put on stream. Royal Flush is one of the ones who plays him, but his team doesn’t offer him much support. Abegen is also a Thor player, but his team is more so centered around Tron. In both cases, if you watch those players, you’ll see how they work with Thor. They both show how well he can move, what his options are up close, and how he typically gets his hits, so watching them play is still recommended.

There are some other Thor players out there that do get their matches recorded either through local tournaments or casuals. Luizmau comes to mind. Pops Ghostly is also a good one to look out for. He usually plays on the hAZmat stream, and on occasion Duck Strong ends up recording his matches. They all play proper Thor teams, so watching them should benefit you the most.

i will wait for it anim8td, there is so much field to explore for new Thor tech

@skyhighclaw, Vega brother, pick Thor with a combination of strange, dorm, ammy, doom, raccoon, vergil, morrigan in the 2nd and 3rd position and you will do good, eventually will figure out all the individual tech with each character. While i agree that those players that Dj mentioned are very good, they commit mistakes some times, so better play you the character and see what you can do for yourself then watch other people and see what good things you can take from them. (ignore abegen though, his thor is ***)

I don’t know if anyone here knows this, but the new Thor: God of Thunder series that’s out is oh so good. Get on that now. Get inspired to level up your game.

Actually my roomate has some issues, i should borrow it and check it out, Thanks!

Brother in spanish Ninjitsu! Honestly i play iron man and strider and im not changing those charecters out, Because I’m the kinda of wierdo who picks his characters BEFORE the game comes out lol. I used to play virgil on point when the game 1st came out because spiral swords was alot more like ouroboros was in marvel 1&2 than ouroboros is in marvel 3 lol. and the over saturation of Virgil really left me drained and uninspired to keep using him. But then came the God of Thunder! So I try to play the best i can with the charecters I love because chances are I usually pick characters that end up being in the bottom of the tier list(Vega in vanilla sf4 shudders)

Also, I knew about abogen I really didn’t see anything special about his thor to be honest lol

Well, I rarely post around here, but I am always watching. I am proud to report my team got second place today at 3 vs 3 at Super Arcade. I’ll dig up the archive video later today.

My main goal lately is focusing on handling troublesome characters (currently Zero) using my true characters and NOT by just picking up high tiers.

SCR is THIS WEEKEND!

Can’t wait to see you pull out all the Thor tech. Also I know I have no reason to give you strategies since your Thor is better than mine but the way I always beat Zeros is with Tick throws using back :h: and Cmd grabs and when they tech throws I use :m: or :h: M.Hurricane right away to snatch them in the recovery cuz there is nothing they can do. Only hard part is pinning him down so hes forced to deal with a mix up.

I think the best way to beat Zero is to stay in defense mode out of his hitbox spectre, in other words, charging mighty strikes and throwing sparks in angles where he cant lightning > buster > dash down > dash forward > cr. M confirm, and thats out of his 90°, 45° and 135° angles when he has a buster charged. This is assuming Zero is stationary, Thor must also learn to react to his teleports, which is probably the hardest part of the matchup, but sparks and strikes out of those angles should keep Zero away or at least more respectful of Thor options. Zero cant air command dash > buster > lightning, its unsafe and Thor must react and grab him/punish him when Zero do it assistless.

Hidden missiles or Stalking flares/Vishanti DHCs are a mandatory to fight this dude, specially if he’s playing with his bfs. XFC > mighty hurricane L is a no-no, Zero release his buster and it hit thor out of it, Zero doesnt have a reason to ever be in hurricane H range. Mighty strike go through Jam session, and j.S/spark L beat Strider vajra, but Thor cant jus’t throw that stuff in Zero hitbox spectre so he must be careful and analyze if he can punish assists at all. Only fully charged mighty strikes have 0 recovery in the air/at sj height so Thor must be solid and charge the strikes every time he can. Grounded strike L > mighty hurricane can also be useful in this matchup

Hope that helps mr Flush n_n

Sorry for the delay, guys. Here are the archive vids from the 3 vs. 3: http://www.twitch.tv/iebattlegrounds/b/356504173 http://www.twitch.tv/iebattlegrounds/b/356594426 In the first video, I OCV our first opposing team. We face Knives’ team in winner’s on stream, but my teammates Quasidomo and Rayzyrbyrn put up a better fight than I did. Most of our loser matches were fought off-stream. I managed to OCV a few teams, but there were a couple where I had my teammates handle what I couldn’t  In the second video, you may watch most of it in it’s entirety because my team gets to run a gauntlet starting from loser’s semis to grand finals, with me as the starting player against each team. Enjoy and tell me what you see.

What do you Guys think Is Thor most underutilized tactic. To me its his norm jump air dash up into flight and call assists at super jump height.

I think it’s converting every hit of air :m: and :h: Mighty Strike into a combo. Obviously, you won’t be able to get every hit converted, but a good bit of them should work with just stand :l:. Also, people should really mix up using :m: and :h: Strikes. When you get predictable with one, you get sloppy. Let people know that you can do whatever you want with it.

/\ That’s my whole gameplan, lol.

well thats basically my neutral game with thor xD

It should be everyone’s whole game plan. Tricky assist calls make Thor’s approach safe.

H strikes are also very ambiguous when you’re right above the opponent’s head.

I figured I would go around and post this on character forums so folks can check it out:
