NEUTRALIZE! The Sentinel Guide (Last update 27/1/13: Check out the incoming mix-ups)

The issue with playing sentinel in the air is while I agree 100 percent thats where he should be played, its really not easy, you need to know your spacing and keep your unfly’s on deck or your gonna get opened up/air thrown mad easy. Plus its a lot of inputs, I mean a simply fly unfly :m: :m: is 6 different inputs which can be difficult to get the hang off, especially when a wolverine is tryna get in that ass. And then theres the issue of landing after you’ve taken flight while a wesker is right underneath you crossing under you left and right and jump up air throw you(seriously how do you guys land after taking flight? Im currently experimenting with :l: unfly :l: and while its prevented airthrow attempts, I still get crossed under. Is this one of those “just dont be in that situation” type situations?).

I guess what Im getting at is, while I pretty much agree with everything you said, the robot can be a little difficult to play effectively, so in typical mvc 3 player fashion, people just don’t do it. I’ve begun playing him on point with tatsu in the back to improve my offense, since at the moment its literally non existent, I get all my sentinel kills from air throws and punishing bad teleports(that shit is so insulting). But I definitely think my game is getting better.

A quick question to you guys though, I have noticed in training mode that when I do like a fly :l: unfly :m: and I set the dummy to pushblock, sometimes I end up a half screen away and other times I land right next to them. Im not sure if its the timing of my unfly’s or the timing of my dashes thats causing this(or both) so I figured id ask.

Doesn’t Fly/Unfly negate pushblock? If so, it would be the timing on your unfly after j :l:

But dash timing can affect this too, so it’s a combination of both, i guess. Definitely the first one.

I would agree on Kanta with the unlfy timing after the j. :l:

IF PERFECTLY TIMED, you should end up right next to the enemy every time, but our slight errors in precision can occasionally cause Sentinel to be slapped across the screen with ONE pushblock.

As for the FLY j. :m:, UN-FLY j. :m: stuff, you just gotta keep practicing… (Just look at RayRay’s Sentinel, just complete nuts!)

I really need some help in the vergil matchup. It has gotten to the point to where I can’t really even get him to block one of my boots. When I get in that booty, he’s a dead demon, but can I get some help on getting around the swords and get in on him.

Terrible matchup for Sent. If you’re playing a twitchy Vergil who likes doing teleport mixups, a good read with Hyper Sentinel Force is amazing. It’s fairly safe if he doesn’t do anything (if you get him to block, it’s plus on black, otherwise watch out for sj. shenanigans). However, if he wants to do a teleport mixup or vergil’s berzerker slash into one of his power up or spiral swords hypers, you’ll catch him and get a free kill.

Obviously the neutral game is hard, but that’s why it’s a bad matchup.

I knew I wasn’t imagining things when I thought the netural game was bad, but this makes the matchup sound like a 9-1 in vergil’s favor without meter and 7-3 with meter.

Yea it and zero are probably sents worst match-ups, try to get the hang of throwing him out of his berserker slashes, its a very useful tool to have if you get a good read on a berserker slash. Also, if he puts the crown on your head, either snap him out, DHC out or super jump when the swords are coming down(they won’t combo if your at super jump height). Do a lot of fly unfly :m: to get a really low altitude :m:, it should get him if he tries to preemptively AA you and then you can dash in cr.:m: for a full combo. But most importantly, be patient, all it takes is one clean hit and vergils dead so no need to get impatient. Heres a video of ray vs omniscythe sent vs vergil.

On a separate note, what purpose does :h: unfly :h: serve? I originally thought it deterred air throw attempts but Im certain that isn’t the case since I spent most of this weekend at toryuken getting air throw out of it, so now I have no idea. It isn’t a good stomp string since the second :h: whiffs if the first is push blocked so quite frankly Im not sure why I should be doing this series.

Fly H, unfly H usually used when I have assists backing me up or they don’t pushblock too often. Well now I have more than just dive kick and dante’s air S to grab people out of. TO THE LAB!!!

Here’s a simple vid i was gonna do with those combos and other misc stuff. hope u guys like it and share. Thanx.

Does the Rocket punch Relaunch combo only work in Lv3 X Factor?

Also, does the grab combo work on small characters? Heavy Characters (Haggar, Nemesis)?

Otherwise, your video was most impressive! I gotta hit the lab for DAT ALL :h: combo (a.k.a. the ALL :h:ELL BROKE LOOSE COMBO) and the grab combo.

When you say rocket punch relaunch Im assuming your referring to the rocket punch pick-up after a throw. If so then yes, only in lvl 3 x-factor on only in the corner.

Yea, that’s what I was referring to this whole time. The Rocket Punch Pick Up combo is nice, sort of like Vanilla style combos, but I still miss those classic combos…

Is this new?

No X-factor. Can’t do it from point blank cr.M (except on larger characters, for some reason) but it works off of mid range cr.M or st.L/cr.L into cr.M, stuff like that. I like this thing.

st.:l: xx cr.:m: xx Fly > j.:l: xx unfly j.:l: [land] :l::m::s:

This is COMPLETELY new to me.

This vid makes me smile on the inside cuz there is still some MvC2 left in SentiJamal

It’s not new, I remember seeing it showcased in Fanatiq’s original combo video for vanilla. It’s definitely cool though.

I did the cr.:m: fly :l: accidentally in training mode once, but could never get the unfly :l: to connect and deemed it impossible so I never bothered sharing it. But now Im feeling like it didn’t connect because i was practicing it on nemesis. Good to know, should be useful, is it corner only though?

nah the first example is done midscreen.

Also, ok then hamsworth, thx!

lol true say, I have no idea how I missed that. Good to know, definitely gonna hit the lab and practice that, least it works on everyone cept the bigs as opposed to the other way around since most(if not all) top tiers aren’t bigs.

It works on the big characters too though :o i think…
EDIT: tested it again. works on big guys but whiffs on Arthur, Joe, RR. didnt test ammy

Really? It kept dropping on nemesis, ill have to run some more tests and practice, guess my execution was just booty then.
