The sound cuts out in online. Not the music, but all the sound effects. It’s really weird and annoying.
what do u mean by that exactly?
When you play the sound effects are lagged out, or completely eliminated.
The netcode so far is excellent, but that audio glitch…annoying >_<
I’m a game dev working on optimizing netcode for an online game right now, and while your right about 2-3-4… 1 is horribly inaccurate.
Bandwidth does matter in many circumstances. Specifically if you don’t have high enough upload (since almost anyone has high enough download) or if you have a high percentage of packet loss (which is fairly common in wireless setups). This problem is multiplied if you are the host.
Granted, lets say (throwing out random numbers here) you need 20KB upload to play, it won’t matter if your 50KB or 100KB, but you would be surprised how many connections have horrible upload speeds. Upload is also typically affected more by bad signal strength than download.
For example, I have a friend on Cablevision in NY (a fairly reputable company) who has no problems in most circumstances, but if he hosts a game he’ll have bad performance due to bad upload. Even trying to host a 1v1 in Twisted Metal results in horrible lag, but if anyone else hosts he can join 15 player matches without problem.
See I get have about 20Kb upload and I have a really bad connection most of the time, and I’m playing people in my own city. Is it more of the game than my ISP at that point?
yes there is
Has anyone tested the online 2 player training mode yet? Is it a real feature or do you only get in while waiting for matches? This feature has me excited, because i want to get someone into the game who lives far away from me. It was always annoying to show him stuff in a vs match environment, so yeah. Would be nice if someone could test it
ok having witnessed this with my own eyes (bear in mind i’ve only seen it, not played it) i’ll chime in with my two cents.
- netcode seems on par with sf4 at the very least. 5 bars seems smooth as fuck.
- lobbies/spectator mode are exactly like sf4, but with the added option to ‘team up’ with someone in the lobby.
- 1 bar connections and stuff like that are still ass, don’t think that they won’t be.
- the audio glitch is kinda annoying but not as bad as it sounds on paper. however, if they don’t get rid of it after a while, i can see it being something that potentially starts to get frustrating.
If you are playing people in your own city it’s probably not routing issues, so you can mark that off. (it’s technically possible if the routing problem is directly in your city, but this would probably give you problems on the internet and many games in general and not just a specific game). Distance is obviously not an issue either.
It may definitely be the upload, although you will want to check packet loss as well. It’s hard to test on fighting games, but if you have anything that’s FPS or a larger room format, you can do a test by making a game as the host, and then joining a game with someone else hosting. If it’s worse when you are hosting in all likeliness it’s your upload.
And of course, it may always be router settings. Consoles can be a pain in the ass with router settings. I suggest one of the guides for setting up DMZ to your console. Some people worry about potential security issues, but realistically you don’t need to worry, it’s much (much) less of an issue putting your console on DMZ compared to a PC since you use web browsers to random pages less and there’s not as much multitasking going on with different programs in the background. If you need a guide just do a search for “ps3 dmz guide” or “360 dmz guide” on google. If you are set on DMZ and still having issues, it’s in the connection somewhere.
When it comes to the question “is it the game or the isp”… I’d say it’s almost definitely the internet connection. But I need to clarify, because putting the blame on the game is always an iffy issue depending on perspective. Because if you look at it one way the game can’t be the blame because under the right internet conditions it was already confirmed to work (for example, even MvC3 works great with some connections). But if you look at it on the other hand, again using MvC3 as an example, sometimes people may have probs with MvC3 that run fine in other games (such as they run fine in AE but not MvC3) because of different requirements - so in this sense you can blame it on the game. With that said, if your playing people in your own city you should pretty much NEVER be having issues regardless of game (even Smash Brawl worked fine with people in your own city at release, and that had the worst netcode I’ve seen), so that’s why I say it’s almost definitely the internet connection.
I hope that all made sense, some of it may seem contradictory, but that’s because there’s a lot of variables and complexities. If you have any more questions I’d be glad to clarify =)
You can set fight request on or off in partnered training mode
The sound bug is a little annoying when playing online.
Is there a rematch option like marvel or is it the same like SFIV?
same as sf4. haven’t seen a 2 man lobby yet, so maybe if they were smart they made that an option. doubt it though.
Netcode is better than SF4. I think they tried to copy ggpo because of the way online behaves and the audio drops. Played a guy who had 2 bars, and it didn’t feel like a mess like sf4 would. No heavy input delay.
Unless i’m missing something the absolute worst thing they did was to not allow you to pick who you fight against in ranked. It automatically pairs you with someone. Don’t know why they think that’s a good idea.
Why do that? It was never that way in any version of SFIV. Not to mention, this is mostly the same team behind this one. Glad to here positive reports on online play so far though. Hope this hold once the flood rolls in.
Do they at least tell you what the connection is like before you accept, or let you set that you’ll only fight people with optimum connections?
Yes they tell you the connection and you can back out of the lobby if the connection isn’t good, but it’s going to be annoying having to constantly back out of sub optimal connections.
Eh, you had to do that with blazblue and some other things, it’s not really a big deal to me. Thanks for the heads up.
