"Needs more Dudley!" The Boxer Video Thread

Been trying to put up more G1 finals and more causal games with friends.

Foxisquick, nice, from what i could see you were anti-airing him fairly well and had some nice defence generally stopping him from pressuring you too badly, second round he managed to punish a couple of times due to a missed sweep and a couple of focus baits but i think you handled the trickyness of gen well especially considering there seem to be so few around!

at .38 seconds just wondering what your thinking was behind that particular punish i thought you could have maybe put in a cr.MP EX RU cr.lp cr.sh f.HB maybe

take this comment with a pinch of salt because its just what i personally felt and your a better player than me anyway so not sure how helpful it is :wgrin:

Hey guys i’m back after a while away mainly due to me being in the process of playing my xbox while it has red rings it really is a miracle!

hopefully you can once again give me some constructive criticism,

i had a small conversation with ropedrink about the rog mirror and he was very helpful giving me a few pointers but last night was the first time i got to put them into practice,

he offered to give me a first to 5 and record them (these vids are from his channel) it was the first time i had ever played him we were due to play in a tournament but i couldnt make it in the end due to work commitments, we had a first to 5 (well one wasnt recorded so it was a sort of first to 6 in the end) i won 6-1 but just like you guys to tell me what im doing right and wrong in this particular match-up not sure if i should play more patiently or aggressively

Thanks!

can’t do ex rush upper loops with lag, that being said c.MP headbutt would have been better.

Solid Rog, bud. I watched the first match and saw a few things that stood out as odd, but overall you’re very solid. Disregard any points where you know you have specific reasons for doing what you did. This is just general advice.

~0:24: You answered a late j.fierce with a block. St.strong/cr.fierce would have worked here.
~0:27: You did cr.jab, cr.jab, cr.short(whiff). When you push your opponent into far range you need to remember to switch up your combo. You could have canceled into a dash/hb after the second jab or linked a cr.strong. I know it can be hard to break the jab-jab-short bit on situational reaction, especially if you use jab-jab-short a lot, but it’s something you need to work towards being able to do. You’re missing out on damage/stun in these situations.
~0:29: You did cr.jab, straight, and had zero stocks. Solid punish on reaction given the situation. However, you have 35 frames to punish a whiffed FA. As such, consider replacing cr.jab with cr.strong in those situations.
~0:36: Your opponent whiffed an ex.upper and you didn’t answer. Since he whiffed, you weren’t in blockstun at all, which meant you had the full 18 frames of ex.upper recovery to punish him. You also had one stock. You missed out on a potential ex.upper loop.
~0:43: Woo boy. A halfscreen ex.upper on trade. That was quite a gamble, especially since he had ultra. You were very lucky his reactions weren’t on point there. On a trade like that he should have been buffering his ultra just in case his opponent did exactly what you did…
~0:45: …but at least you got a combo after the block. You did cr.jab, cr.short, straight. You had one stock and finished a second on the short. You could have squeezed in an ex.upper loop here.
~0:46: cs.jab into throw on reset. Solid.
~1:14: Fantastic dsb reset combo. That was textbook perfection right up until you dropped it after the dsb, which rendered reset gamble pointless. If I had to guess I’d say maybe you rushed the cr.strong and it didn’t come out? Regardless, that was beautiful up until you dropped it. The only thing I personally would have done differently would have been to make the dsb an ex to maintain the visual pattern of ex flashes which makes it harder for my opponent to react. Either way though, that was some good shit.
~1:26: This point is probably moot, but I’ll throw it in here anyway. On a dizzy jump-in you did j.rh, cr.jab, cr.jab, cr.short, f.hb for the win. I realize you were probably just keeping it simple to guarantee the win, and you probably know what I’m about to say, but on a dizzy jump-in you can go for j.rh, cs.rh, cr.strong, ex.upper, etc for far more damage and stun than the usual jab-jab-short business. You won with what you did though, and that’s really all that matters.

Good shit, bud.

You are a hero! the way you just look through the video and find out the finer points of what people do wrong is brilliant!

yeah i agree with everythink you said on that post, you were also spot on on the reset as well i missed the cr.mp. I know about the last point you mentioned regarding the j.rh, cs.rh, cr.strong, ex.upper the reason i did the basic was just to make sure i got the win! didnt want to be to flashy and miss the link and look like a fool lol

thanks man much appreciated as always!

Ultra David posted an interesting option select video for every char in SF4. For Balrog, he posted a jumpin RH that comes out as a TAP if wiffed…the vid shows him punishing a sim that reversal teleports on wakeup with the option select TAP.

I thought this was interesting, although i dunno, this might be old news to alot of you since I’m sorta behind the curve with alot of the option select/safejump stuff.

Man alive. That j.rh/tap os is really awkward to do. Especially since you have to start charging the tap before you jump. It seems useful vs chars with escape-reversals, but man alive is it awkward.

Didn’t try it yet, you mean the input is just awkward to do? I imagine I’ll find a use for it against Bisons and Sims, but even more so for knocked down Akumas (actually, nm, i guess akuma can’t really be safe jumped though…).

xaaz doing j.HP s.HK c.MP ex rush upper is like really a gamble. It’s a very small frame window to execute that online and you should really take that into consideration when you give feedback. His option instead is far better because it lands with lag or not.

TVTVTV

Yeah, the input and the setup.

Personally, my hand does not agree with using Index-Middle-Ring on 3P, then Little on rh while letting go of 3P. It just feels alien and unnatural and I don’t like it at all. That’s how I pull it out anyway. What can I say.

The setup seems sketchy too. I use tap sparingly, but when I do I like to hide the fact that I’m charging it. I don’t like the idea of my opponent seeing me just throw out a random normal and knowing instantly that I’m charging a tap.

With this j.rh/tap os it’s a tough hidden setup to do out of the blue. It seems like it would lend itself well to combos that you know end in a non-techable knockdown, but otherwise it seems like it would be a gamble to setup.

Like if I just throw out a cr.rh poke and hide the charge there. If the cr.rh hits, great. I can do the os next. If it’s blocked or whiffed, then what? I’m near my opponent, all my punches are locked down, and I’ve got a tap that is quickly becoming more and more unsafe to do to get rid of. That’s not a good situation to be in. Jump back, shed tap, j.fierce or dash back, jump back, shed tap, j.fierce are probably the safest options to get rid of it, but even those aren’t completely safe. The whole idea of being in close range with no punches and sitting on a tap at a complete disadvantage is just a nightmare for me.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m putting more thought into it than I should. I should probably just take it for what it is; a situational os to use on occasion to keep your opponent guessing.

foxisquick

Online lag is irrelevant to me when I give feedback, bud. If someone feels a certain combo is unsafe to do under certain laggy conditions, that’s fine. That’s their decision to make. That does not mean though that one should gimp ones knowledge and execution of combos in order to play safer in those types of situations. Cs.rh into cr.strong is a 1 frame link, as tight as they come, whether you’re online or off. Many people pull out 1 frame links online all the time. There are even techniques, such as plinking, that make pulling out 1 frame links safer in any situation. If you want to make a distinction between online and offline viable combos in any advice you give, go for it. More power to you, buddy. I personally however will not cater to lag in the feedback I give. It just adds another layer of complexity that I don’t care to go into.

Not sure why you’re mentioning plinking, it can’t be used with balrog in these situations.

“cater” or “irrelevant”. That’s not really fair now is it? I mean that would be like saying “hey you need to land that link after an ex rush upper!” by your logic you’re willing to critique landing of a 1 frame combo online? Which is obviously ridiculous considering that with increased latency the timing of a live play is different so of course he’ll miss it. But you’re trying to make it out that lag doesn’t matter to you when giving advice? and yet it has to in order to give sound advice.

I am glad you’re willing to give advice to people but to say “lag is irrelevant” is a bit laughable.

After getting sick of all the endless new threads about BnB trouble and ‘How do I do the EX upper loop?’, I decided to make a tutorial video encompassing the majority of execution needed for Balrog. There’s nothing particularly new here, just me doing a bunch of his combos plus dash ultra with some tips on execution as well as displaying my hand inputs at the same time.

Nice

Someone post a new Maeda vid quick! I need to be inspired…

recently there have been some solid rog vids out.

I guess this would be the place to put this.

I made this out of boredom today.

Enjoy

Weird, the video cuts off at 0:43. Tried Firefox and IE several times…

EDIT: Must have just been my work computer. Works fine from home. Nice stuff!
