I’ll give this tut a run through and see if I run into the same problem [but my computer, plus my work ethic is slow so it might take me a moment]. I’ll post up in here if I find out what the problem is [if someone hasn’t responded by then].
And thanks for the image link. Greatly appreciated. I’ll use it for the tut.
Note: Try saving it as a PNG. I’m just guessing, but PNG’s are the highest quality format you can save them in [as far as I know, but if I’m wrong, then someone please enlighten the thread].
I’m thinking you missed a step somewhere. Remember that the alpha channel is only being used to create a selection. That selection is then used to deleted out the white space on the subject.
Also, when he refers to gradients, he is talking about gradient maps. These are under Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map…
For the gradient map on top of the Alex layer, you need to use the selection from the alpha layer again to make sure the top gradient layer only applies to Alex.
I’ll upload pics of that in a bit.
Here’s how mine turned out:
Edit: Here’s a screen that might help
As you can see, I used the gradient maps to give the colors to the BG and Alex. The gradient map used for Alex only applies to that area because of the mask to the left of the gradient icon, hence the white figure inside the black.
This thread has inspired me to start a thread about Photoshop. Something like, Photoshop 101, where a bunch of people participate in a weekly tut [chosen at random], then put up their results at the end. Then people could discuss problems, etc…?
That sounds like a great idea. It can help newer PS users start building their knowledge of techniques as well as getting some practice. It may also teach more experienced users some new or different ways to get something done. All around, it can help create some inspiration.
Yeah, I’m diggin’ the Photoshop idea but participation would be a factor. I have to spread the word a bit more and find some tuts in the meantime. I know at least two good ones that are very detailed and easy to understand [one involves making a glass ball by hand and distorting a newspaper. Looks very realistic].
i, too, think it would be a great idea, sas. maybe one of the IMM mods would sticky it and replace the current photoshop tutorial thread with it. (like what they did with the image finding thread.)
like the first post would have the link to the old thread and all the tutorials that have been done already. and the second post would be the current tutorial.
