Need help understanding channels in PS

I was reading a tutorial on how to do a “vintage effect” it worked out fine http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/ange1s1ayer/?action=view&current=ScreenHunter_01Jan131514.gif
but when I save it, it doesnt save the actual effect I guess I have to merge the channel with the layer first or something?.. Im new with this stuff so any help is appreciated

to be more specific when I save the picture it looks plain with no effect. if anyone knows an easier way to make that effect Id like too know

What did you save the file as? [PNG, JPEG, etc] That might have something to do with it…?

Could you link to the tut? And that’s a dope Alex image by the way.

I saved it as a jpeg heres the link http://www.photoshoptalent.com/photoshop-tutorials/retro-effect.php

oh and heres the pic of fem alex if you want it http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/ange1s1ayer/1199817382861.jpg

I’ll give this tut a run through and see if I run into the same problem [but my computer, plus my work ethic is slow so it might take me a moment]. I’ll post up in here if I find out what the problem is [if someone hasn’t responded by then].

And thanks for the image link. Greatly appreciated. I’ll use it for the tut.

Note: Try saving it as a PNG. I’m just guessing, but PNG’s are the highest quality format you can save them in [as far as I know, but if I’m wrong, then someone please enlighten the thread].

 thanx you rule

Edit: Here’s another shot at it. I’m guessing the more ‘shadows’ the image has, the better the quality. :xeye:

From what I’ve seen, I think your forgetting to do a step. I’ll look into it right now.

I’m thinking you missed a step somewhere. Remember that the alpha channel is only being used to create a selection. That selection is then used to deleted out the white space on the subject.

Also, when he refers to gradients, he is talking about gradient maps. These are under Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map…

For the gradient map on top of the Alex layer, you need to use the selection from the alpha layer again to make sure the top gradient layer only applies to Alex.

I’ll upload pics of that in a bit.

Here’s how mine turned out:

Edit: Here’s a screen that might help

As you can see, I used the gradient maps to give the colors to the BG and Alex. The gradient map used for Alex only applies to that area because of the mask to the left of the gradient icon, hence the white figure inside the black.

BTW Sas, I saw your original. :wgrin:

That tut left out some important steps for noobies such as myself. I had to take a moment to find that damn Gradient Map.

Also, I think he forgot to do the FILTER->ARTISTIC->CUTOUT step.

ok got it thanks for the help guys I just wanted to learn that cool dot effect heres a test http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/ange1s1ayer/osdhfoishfoiashf.jpg pretty snazzy

I guess we all learned a new useful effect

Looks good to me.

This thread has inspired me to start a thread about Photoshop. Something like, Photoshop 101, where a bunch of people participate in a weekly tut [chosen at random], then put up their results at the end. Then people could discuss problems, etc…?

Good idea? Lame idea? Already Been Done idea?

I’ll leave it as a ‘thought’ for the time being.

i think its a great idea seeing as a lot of people here use PS

That sounds like a great idea. It can help newer PS users start building their knowledge of techniques as well as getting some practice. It may also teach more experienced users some new or different ways to get something done. All around, it can help create some inspiration.

Sas, I love your new AV. It rocks.

Thanks Vegett0.

Yeah, I’m diggin’ the Photoshop idea but participation would be a factor. I have to spread the word a bit more and find some tuts in the meantime. I know at least two good ones that are very detailed and easy to understand [one involves making a glass ball by hand and distorting a newspaper. Looks very realistic].

Here’s hoping!

i, too, think it would be a great idea, sas. maybe one of the IMM mods would sticky it and replace the current photoshop tutorial thread with it. (like what they did with the image finding thread.)

like the first post would have the link to the old thread and all the tutorials that have been done already. and the second post would be the current tutorial.

I have no problem replacing the Photochop tutorial thread with a photochop 101 thread.

Sas would have to run it.

Good lookin’ out everyone. I’ll go find the tuts I was thinking about and think of guidelines. And I’d be more than happy to run it.
