Need help on how to get better

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but this is my first post on this site.

I’m new to USF4 (2 months?). At this point, I can beat hardest arcade mode most of the time without losing/retrying (Seth can be pretty ridiculous) as Evil Ryu. However, I win probably 1 game every 10 games in online mode. I know I still need to learn the basic, but I’m not really learning anything when I kept getting combo to death. I know the game is pretty old, so most people playing online mode are pretty good at this point, but I need some suggestions on how I can get better. I really don’t want to play against CPU over and over.

Where I am:

  1. I can input special move 100% of the time
  2. I understand the basic “concept” such as cross up, link, combo, fadc, etc.
  3. I can successfully do the basic Evil Ryu bnb about 75% of the time in training mode and 50% of the time against CPU (st.hp > m axe > cr.lp > l.tatsu > h.dp).
  4. I can successfully do fadc 90% of the time (fadc into ultra or other bnb)
  5. I bought and have been playing on a fightstick for about 2 months.
  6. I watched A LOT OF tutorials and matches on youtube (I have a very addictive personality)
  7. For about 2 months, I played about 100 hours at this point.

Questions:

  1. do you have any suggestions how i can practice in addition to doing combo over and over in training mode?
  2. anyone here want to play with me? I usually play on steam between 10pm~1am PST. Is there some kind of newbie community out there or on this site?
  3. how do i practice the so-call basic?

Oh btw, I tried normal Ryu and had a better success. I got to about 1k PP as normal Ryu. I switched to Evil Ryu because e.Ryu is just cooler, and successfully landing combo feels amazing. If I’m still too new to play e.Ryu, please let me know. I don’t mind switching character if I can learn how to be better, but I do prefer shodo characters. I also tried Akuma and Sakura, but they are way too hard for me.

after posting this, I read a few similar posts. 1 of the suggestion people gave is to play on xbox over ps3. i do have an xbox although i prefer to play on pc (steam), but i feel that the people on steam are really good (or i’m just too bad) and the community is fairly small. i assume there are a lot more people on xbox than steam (since steam usf4 is still fairly new)?

I think there’s two schools of thought on who to play when you start playing. It can be hard to say and it probably depends on each individual. I’ve always said, play who you want. I started out playing Viper and I definitely went though my share of frustration I don’t think playing a different character would have helped. That was just me personally though.

Arcade mode isn’t the best way to practice. It can be kinda gimmicky. I do think playing the cpu on hardest can help with spacing and it definitely helps with practicing your setups and frametraps. Just because of the fact if you mess one up Ryu bot is probably gonna uppercut your face off. It’s no substitute for real people though, but sometimes its all you have.

The fact that you watch a lot of matches helps a lot on its own. Until I got some friends involved in the game thats all I really had to go on. If you go on the character forums you can find lots of resources for set-ups and things like that.

When learning a new combo repetition is key but when it comes to practicing what I know I prefer to keep things a lot more free form. I always found myself doing the same things over and over in matches because my muscle memory would always shoot me in a certain direction. So keeping things a little random can help you be prepared for situations where your second cr. LP of a combo wouldn’t hit. You’ll just naturally be ready to do Cr. LP > Cr. MP instead.

Last but not least. Keep a list of the things you’ve learned like combos and set ups. That always kept me from practicing one thing too much and forgetting something else.
