So I am more of a new player. Despite having played Third Strike, several versions of Street Fighter 4 and Street Figher X Tekken I would still call myself not really experienced. Mostly because I never really tried to become good in them and played them more casually. I want to change that now though.
The problem I have is to decide who to main. I played the majority of the cast so far and I definitely have my favorites but I can’t seem to make a final choice. I prefer to learn the ins and outs with a single character instead of diverting my efforts among multiples which puts me into this awkward spot.
On a different forum I asked people if I should go with Cammy or Karin and pretty much every response I got was in Cammys favor citing things like better AA, less difficult combos, good footsies, etc. basically saying she is easier to play which will help me learn the game faster. After playing for a bit I can definitely see now that Karin may not be the best choice for a newbie like my no matter how much I like her as a character.
Now it’s between Cammy and Chun-Li though. I was never much into Chun-Li in previous Street Fighter games but for some reason I really like her in this one. Can’t even tell you why exactly. I have noticed already that Chun-Li demands a bit more execution skills to really pull off some impressive stuff which I honestly don’t quite have yet but on the other hand she also has great normals and isn’t utilizing those one of the fundamental things I should learn and master first?
So which character I should go with it? Which character would be a better choice for a newbie who wants to learn the basics and improve himself?
I’d go with Cammy. She’ll teach you SF with the less executional work and gives you a meterless DP to anti air and get out of a situation when you need to.
Chun Li would be good also since she does have a projectile and is partly a charge character so it would help you learn those aspects of the game also. Overall though start with Cammy, then transition over to Chun after when you feel comfortable.
Welcome to SRK. Make sure you read up on the forum rules, threads like this asking for suggestions are not technically allowed (rules are in the stickies).
Everyone here will ultimately tell you to play who you like/enjoy. Having fun is important and progressing with a character will happen naturally over time.
Cammy, Chun, and even Karin are all pretty good characters to get acquainted with the game. Cammy is arguably the easiest of the three, good buttons and offense in general.
Chun is very well-rounded, superb buttons and can mix offense/defence well. Karin can seem a little daunting at first but basic gameplay and fundamentals can take you far with her (watch some of Justin Wong’s Karin for example).
Cammy is good beginner character to use but you have to know to pressure the opponent. Also she does have lowest health of all the characters is something that should be worth noting. However like all characters it does take some degree of execution and timing to user her properly.
also if you want to use chun li do note she does have two charge moves in her arsenal. If you are not found of charge characters I would suggest forgetting chun.
Cammy is definitely a good beginner character but choose who you have the most fun with. I’m actually starting to sub Cammy. I love her V-trigger combos. Cammy has one of the easiest and highly damaging V-trigger activation combos. The best part? You don’t need to spend any meter to do her V-trigger combo. Then after you wax that ass on a good CC punish you still have your critical art stocked, which means you’re still a threat. Cammy is awesome bro.
I personally wouldn’t be having such a bad time if I didn’t main Vega. I love him in this game so I tough it out.
I would say go with Cammy, basically for the reasons other people mentioned above. For a newer player, her offense will feel great to execute as it’s both rewarding and relatively easy to do. She’s got good pressure, good normals and a good AA.
But if you’re really stuck about who to choose, you can check out Street Fighter 5 official guides about each character. I’m sure you can find better resources to learn each character strewn across the internetz and the Shoryuken Wiki is also great to check out, but Capcom does a pretty good job running through the basics of each character. Here’s Cammy’s:
You make a good point. Getting into Chun later on is definitely an option too. Especially when I then know what to watch out for and what’s good and bad.
Your avatar makes your comment even better because Bison is definitely one of my favorite characters in the franchise but I won’t lie. His charge gameplay is really tough for me. I tried getting into it several times even in the previous games but never made any progress on that.
I find it OK with Chun-Li though. Since one charge move is a projectile and the other one is mostly a combo ender. It’s easier for me to process than pretty much every special move being a charge one. If they turn Balrog into a hybrid or a complete motion character like they did with Vega then I wouldn’t have a problem with that to be honest.

Thanks for recommending those videos. I know they existed but I didn’t actually watch them. I watched the Cammy one and did find it helpful and I think I will watch all the others too now.
his charge moveset is tough indeed, that’s why i decided to dedicate all the time i will put into this game into learn him. He has some good tools, which i feel if I can learn his charge timing correctly it work wonders. You really should use who ever you love using though if you choose based on learning curve you might end up changing later down the line again. See I tried laura, didn’t work then I swithed to cammy. Now I am back to bison who I didn’t try previous do to the charge moveset and difficulty in learning him. Bison was one my most favorite characters use since the early days of sfiv, if just stuck with him i could have practiced much more then i did instead of changing characters.
So yeah Im going with Cammy for now. I have to admit that the release of Alex actually made me a bit interested in all the grappler types (Zangief, Birdie, Alex, R.Mika) though. Those are also the only ones along with Cammy whose trials I could manage to complete. Certainly helps that they don’t have overly long, complicated and finger-breaking combos.
Im not ashamed to admit it that Cammys last trial easily took me an hour maybe even two to complete. Ironic that the earned title is “Precision is key” since quite obviously I was lacking exactly that.
yeah if you’re a casual player, i would definitely recommend cammy over chun. execution is always an issue with more casual players and chun definitely has a steeper learning curve than cammy
