Hey everyone.
First off just want to introduce myself.
I’ve been playing fighting games on and off since the mid 90’s, everything from Street fighter, MK, Tekken, Clay Fighter, original KI, etc. I was never great, but I enjoyed them.
I remember being young and at the arcade and crowds forming around MK and MK2 cabinets to witness a fatality. Ever since then I was a fan.
Well fast forward, and I’m still playing video games, still a fan of fighting games, but just now trying to be decent at them.
I’m not trying to go MLG, I just want to be above average I guess. Basically being good without having to worry about frame stuff and all that.
Today, I practice the same way I did back then…
Find a character I like… Play against CPU in arcade mode and jot down what matchups were inherently difficult… Then enter training mode, learn some moves, and run endless matches against worst matchup for my character until I can consistently execute, punish and anticipate attacks. Then I’d play against real people.
It worked back then despite how “impractical” it may seem, and the hardest part about it is arcades are for the most part gone, and all my friends are too old to play or even care for video games, plus my life’s a lot busier today then when I was a teenager, so I’m trying out online…
Now, Online didn’t exist back then… So you played against real people at the arcade or at home on CRT TVs with no input lag, and of course no online lag to worry about either.
TL:DR: Can someone suggest a training method I can apply to fighting games in general that’s better than what I created as a preteen lol, and how to train, or compensate, for lag in online play.
Thanks!
