Necalli Beginners Thread

nash - birdie matchup? no one talked about that?!

I’ve only been playing Necalli for a few days now, so take my input with a grain of salt, but (as a former Nash player) I find pros and cons between their normals in general; not specific to the Birdie matchup.

Necalli seems to have better normals from close range. But his limbs are quite stubby and it’s hard to get anything done from mid range. Nash has a good variety of normals with reasonable speed that cover a lot of ranges. For most chars in the game, longer range normals tend to be more negative on block. Nash has more long range normals so at first it may seem like a negative point for him, however it’s a way to make up for the versatility of his normals.

His close range normals (with the exception of the lack of a 3f normal) seem to be comparable to Necalli’s. In addition, Nash can actually get an easy confirm into lk scythe from a light normal. Necalli can only confirm into ex stomp off of lights (not a bad option mind you, but meter management comes into question).

On the other hand like you mention, Nashs cr.mk has amazing range but to make up for its range, it is not cancellable. Necallis cr.mk is shorter range but you can cancel into lk stomp as a small gap closer.

Overall which is better depends on how you prefer to play. Like Audric mentioned, I believe Nashs buttons are much better in the neutral game, but Necalli is scarier up in your face.

Edit: like I said, I am still new to Necalli, so feel free to criticize and point out where I went wrong. Could always use some criticism on my thought process.

Hey there, Necalli beginner here after not playing since the release of alex.
I can’t get his meaty s.lk to work after his TC on a backroll quickrise. Do I have to input a specific ground burst or just the regular one without directional inputs?

I am not a guy who struggles with execution but i can’t connect it. His s.mk does not connect because they are too far away and after 2 dashes I am inputting the s.lk as soon as possible.

I have no problems to do it after a sweep but this one…is funny.

How is the meaty not working? Some clarification on your wording would help.

If the st.MK is whiffing because it’s too far, then just using cr.MP instead.

My bad, yes that is the problem. After two dashes and the meaty, Necalli is too far away to connect his knee.
Hm is it that easy? I thought the meaty into TC is guaranteed.

Thank you for answering such an old question.

Okay, iirc, Target Combo to double dash, the preferred meaty button is standing or crouching jab, for beating 3f normals. On meaty or counter hit, your jab should be able to combo into st.MK and you can finish your combo however you’d like. If you use st.LK as your meaty button, you will trade with the opponent’s 3f wakeup normal. If the opponent doesn’t have a 3f normal and wakes up with a 4f normal, you should be able to beat it with st.LK, however, I think the pushback from st.LK makes it impossible to link into st.MK. Anyways, if you’re trying to beat a 4f wakeup normal off your target combo, you should use st.MK or cr.MP instead, since the priority system will have your medium normal completely stuff the opponent’s 4f wakeup light normal. Your combo potential will increase, too. IIRC, you should be able to use st.MK or cr.MP, combo into MK Stomp, cr.MP, LP Disc’s Guidance. I may be wrong. I split my time between Necalli and Ryu now so I’m not 100% on my tech for either character anymore.

  1. I think you just answered your own question  . Cr.Mp is like the glue that holds his combos together.
  2. When you are at point blank range, you want to go for knockdowns and pressure. Your pressure consists of mixing up your 5-frame normals that lead into combos, meaty command grab, Cr.Mk>stomp, Overhead, Nj.hp>combo (one of the best J.Hpunches), CCs and your 3-frame jab.
  3. Use it to punish others for zoning. Never spam it because it is too slow. Your goal isn’t necessarily to do damage, but build v-gauge.
  4. I made a guide to help me: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1k_DL6mljw8ITBCFQRriyKkIyzjVxc_vvFZXrHT7dry8/edit#
  5. I like to mix up between CC’s and cmd grab.
  6. Yes, it is a crappy crossup, but you can learn to make use of it. Even then, most characters can cause it to wiff just by ducking or doing anything that moves them even slightly. Watch some of the best players in the world use him, and they almost never make use of his crossup.
