Granted it wasn’t a tournament that brought out top notch competition there were still some decent players there. I mean hell there were 64 people in the Street Fighter bracket. There’s no fun in winning a free tournament? Are you serious? I had a lot of fun. Not to mention I won $60 in walmart giftcards, two PC SF4’s, and a bunch of other small crap. So I paid $10, got to play the games that I love to play with a bunch of random other people, and came back with prizes. Sounds like a pretty damn good time to me.
But why is it common knowledge? There has to be some concrete source that makes everyone accept it as “common knowledge”. Any pro-360 bias also destroys any credibility to a debate, argument or references that isn’t from an expert source (it can also be said for a pro-PS3 ass as well).
Get out of my head, you psychokinetic freak.
Re: CGS, I saw Shaun Cosby the day before and talked to him about it, and he basically told me it was one of those things that he always went to, but then ended up asking himself “why did I go to this?” Sooooo, whatever. I mean, I did have fun the one year that I showed up out of nowhere to ruin everyone’s fun in GG, but in general, not worth the gas money it takes me to drive out to Goldsboro. I probably could have done it again in BB, but screw that game.
The people they put in charge of the tournaments also have no freakin’ clue what they’re doing. I remember they set time in GG to 60 seconds, because they said otherwise, people just turtled too much. Total absence of logic: if the timer is shorter, timeouts will happen MORE OFTEN and people are more inclined to just turtle it out. <5 hits was also hilarious.
CGS was good this year. Tournaments were ran much better. Prizes were WAY fucking better. It was fun. BB had a really good RANDOM ENCOUNTER Hakumen in finals that gave me a run for my money. SSF4 was a lot of fun. The band that played was great, got to hang out with friends, chill with people, made 100 in gift cards and got a bunch of computer shit.
Stop being so high and mighty. We were all scrubs once too, I’d like to pull people in to the community, not push them out. Plus sometimes it’s cool just to have fun and not be at an ultra serious tournament.
Also, plaques!
And 3.99 lunch / 6.99 super hibachi buffet. And underaged hot nerd chicks! WIN!
Super was ONE MATCH. Yes, 2/3 rounds and you’re done. Almost everyone set their buttons at the start of fights (i.e. didn’t restart). I go with that if the other person wants it, but many would have a problem that.
Once they got to top…8?, they changed to 2/3 sets, yay, however, grand finals were 2/3 matches, 3/5 rounds, INFINITE time. Hey, you’re down on life and don’t want to risk getting in? Well…you don’t! lol
CvS2 was also pretty amazing. So me and Jon signed up for it late, they had the two of us fight each other somewhere in loser’s, I beat Jon and tell the guy I’m going away for maybe 30 mins, I came back 10-15 minutes later and I was disqualified haha. It’s like they just wanted me and Jon out asap. Oh, speaking of, Super had 30-second DQs. In a classroom, with a 64 person bracket. I like that in a way, but don’t you dare have to piss lol.
All that said, I still had a decent time, and losing to Jon was kinda expected since we’ve been going even at gatherings. I’m also bad against Blanka and after losing with U1, made a bad switch to Satellite and got overwhelmed with special moves. I was impressed with some of the players there, I VERY nearly got 4th place because of a solid Bison player. Was that match taped? geez it was hard
Coolest thing was the Ninja Gaiden soundtrack played to a speedrun, like the band was playing the music that corresponded to where the guy was. Especially amusing when he would kill a boss in a few frames and they would only play like three seconds of the boss music lol.
I guess I understand the appeal of a not so serious tournament because it basically means you get to win but without the danger of losing. It’s like having your cake and eating it too. Win win!
