NC HATE THREAD LII: Where the rare Whoopi-Q can be found!

We could also do what the Smashers do and create a Power Rankings with the top 10 being judged by tournament performance + overall opinion in players’ respective games.

Also, Sentinal is gay.

Stopped reading.

Edit:
I’m kidding, I’m kidding. I can’t NOT pick on Smash. And for real this time, no more posts. I couldn’t help myself.

lmfao

Yo Ian, Me and Shino plan to come up there in tommorow afternoon as well. That cool with you?

Also, since Shino has to leave kind of early (around 9:00), East if you can ask Kyle if I can come back with you guys I’d appreciate it. Otherwise I’m cool with going back when Shino leaves. I have gas $ for both parties if necessary (via my card, no cash on hand sorry).

Yo wordtalk, it’s time to get it in. Majors are right around the corner.

Good posts Jimmy. Glad this was something posted instead of something said in an xbox live Illuminati meeting.

I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow night!

Have fun guys D:

Yeah have fun.

Jimmy you’re right on that stuff. But mostly in your post the getting better stuff also didn’t involve worrying about who is good and who isn’t.

I promise you with good information and good practice consistently, anyone will get good. I guess what I’m trying to say is, we need to stop sitting around worrying about hierarchy because in the grand scheme of things NONE of us are really all that good. So why don’t we ALL just try to get better and stop saying “this guy is good or that guy is knowledgeable” or whatever. I guess I get tired of seeing every other post people list Matt/Roski/Etc like they’re some sort of gods. Get better, read up, and beat them. I don’t like to see people so stuck in a hierarchical mindset. It’s like how everyone assumes Justin / Daigo / etc are unbeatable and just accept it.

The people that win are the people that put in the most effort and have the most experience, plain and simple. So, we should all be “those people” and not worry about who’s the biggest fish in the smallest pond. In the end, it would benefit us much more as players.

I’m really just upset that Jimmy didn’t say my name more. I read all that shit when I really could’ve just ctrl+f and skipped the meaningless sections.

The people who would be perturbed at some sort of hierarchy aren’t going to be the people at the top, or the people at the bottom who genuinely want to get better, it’s going to the people in the middle who think they’re better than they really are. PONDER THAT PEOPLE P.GOOD ALLITERATION.

I just ordered Super for the 360 (and Dragon Quest IX), so I’ll be playing some of you guys soon.

i personally see nothing wrong with establishing where players are in relation to their peers. i don’t see any difference in having your strengths/weaknesses written out for you for free for you to see and paying $10 to enter a tournament and having all your shit laid bare in front of everyone then being left with questions about what you did “wrong”.

You good man, sounds like a plan

Holy shit Lucky’s looks fun as hell.

Austin call me ASAP!!! I need a favor from u 336-406-7948

I mean, obviously people are going to be better or worse but I just think the obsession with figuring out who’s better than what is silly. Maybe that’s me. I just feel it’s limiting and might make people just “accept” where they’re at when they can definitely get better. The ranks in NC have been the same for FOREVER. What’s holding people back?

Direct indirectness too strong!

But in a way, what you’re saying pretty much goes along with what I was saying. I know who’s good in the community. I know I can get better than them at some point with effort. I know I’m not there now, so I’m not worrying about it really. If you’re in the middle and think you’re good, you’re holding yourself back because because you’re more caught up on your current level and not going higher. I’d know from experience.

“Getting good” is overrated. :looney:

I liked this paragraph as well. I think players need to exercise tact more.

Jon, we’re in a competitive activity, the whole point of which is to determine who’s better. People are going to get ranked, otherwise what’s the point of playing competitively?

I get the point you’re trying to make. There are some players who consider those above them as being “unbeatable” and that’s why they can’t get any better. But there are also a fair number of average players who think they’re better and aren’t able to improve because they have the attitude you’re talking about here. You have to have an objective view of who’s better, if only to have a benchmark or goal. Once you reach that level or surpass it, you can then raise your benchmark to the next level (regional/national/worldwide).

What’s been missing from NC that would really help people improve is dialogue about games, as I mentioned earlier. When I say dialogue, I’m talking about objective, intelligent dialogue. Too many people get butthurt for this to happen, most of the time. Just like here, you can’t objectively talk about rankings of players without someone jumping up going “hey waitaminute”. Specifically, if you’re a guy who thinks he’s pretty good, but you don’t have results to really back up how you feel, people aren’t going to recognize you next to the other good players. Now, if your thought on that is “fuck that, I’m better than these guys and I can prove it”, then that’s great! That’s the attitude you need to improve.

Here’s where you need to be objective. If you feel that you are better, or at least can become better, than the currently established good players, BUT you don’t have evidence (results), then your best bet is to keep those feelings to yourself. If you go around yelling about it, then not only are you not doing anything to help your case, but people will see you as a blowhard and not respect you. Just keep telling yourself “I’m better than this” and use that as fuel to train and improve, until you get a chance to prove that you are actually better.

BTW, it’s really easy to skew results in your favor, whether it be casuals or money matches. The fact that I beat Matt at the last actual local GG tournament doesn’t change the fact that he’s been beating me consistently for a couple of years in GG tournaments. It also doesn’t change the fact that he still regularly places higher than me at majors when we both go. Have I improved? Damn straight, and I intend to keep improving. But Matt is still better than me at GG. Results pretty much show that.

Another minor point, about saying to yourself that you can improve and get better than the good players around you. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that they’re gonna sit still while you’re improving. A truly competitive player is always looking up. You can ALWAYS improve, and there’s always someone better than you out there, so you need to keep that in mind while trying to get better than the players around you. They’re trying (and often succeeding) at improving while you are too.

That’s enough from me for now. More on “why can’t we talk about games?” later.

Youre quite wrong Jon. In your absence there have been some interesting new developments in the community. A crop of new players have slowly started climbing the so called “ranks”. Guys like Duncan (mister K) Dominique (ace) and Brent (that white dude) have started upsetting the balance not just here (Duncan winning Lucky’s, Ace placing top 5 consecutively+pulling major team upsets) but also abroad (Brents top 20 @ NEC). I wouldn’t call it an obsession to want to know what im doing wrong or why I lose to certain other players because they may do something simple better than me.

Tournament results don’t HAVE to be static.

Play more games!!! (Besides SF4)
