Yeah. You couldn’t change your assists’ jutsus in the previous games either, only their assist type. Now every character has their own assist type and function though.
So I’ve been messing around with Storm 4 a bit. I played the heck out of the PS2 games and was involved with the community back then, but Storm is still fairly foreign to me.
Are the ‘ranged’ types of characters any good in this game? I’ve been playing as the 2nd Mizukage online, but I’m getting rekt by all the offensive stuff like chakra dashes etc. What kind of gameplan works with these characters, and what assists would you recommend?
But anyway, the game has a few zoners in it. As an archetype they tend to struggle against the more rushdown characters in the cast and generally need the support of an assist or two to be of any use. Most of the tools that these “zoner” characters have can be chakra dashed through which makes them unsafe in most scenarios unless you’re using these attacks properly. Here’s a list of all the characters that can be placed into the “zoner” archetype:
Temari
Gengetsu
Utakata
Kaguya
Konan
Deidara
Puppet characters include:
Sasori
Chiyo
Kankuro
Kiba
These are all characters that have their “kunai” buttons (Square or X if you’re on Xbone) mapped to throw out (usually) a stream of projectiles that combo your opponent on hit. Combined with the right assists it can be an unbelievable amount of pressure even on block, and a skilled player will be able to keep their opponent away and harass them endlessly with a barrage of hitstun and wasted substitutions.
I separated the puppet characters because while they do also fight at a distance, it’s not the same playstyle at all. Puppet characters basically have you controlling two characters at once: the puppet and the puppeteer. Only the puppeteer can take real damage, and both of you have your own shield gauges that can both break at separate intervals. This is important to consider when trying to master them. You don’t really treat them as separate characters so much as you treat the puppet as an extension of the puppeteer, if that makes sense.
Back onto the specifics on your question though…honestly, Gengetsu (The 2nd Mizukage) isn’t that great at what he tries to do. He was a lot better in the previous games where Instant Awakenings were a thing because it allowed you to conjure up the Genjutsu version of himself on a whim, and all projectile based attacks would home in on his projection rather than the character itself. It opened up a lot of doors and allowed him to get in a lot more pressure as a result. Now that he has lost that, his lackluster “kunai attacks” and short ranged normals become a lot more apparent.
I’d suggest my “Ragequit Team”, a team I’ve been using for the past 3 or 4 games, lol. It’s absolutely ridiculous, and the amount of pressure you can apply with such little effort is absolutely insane. I have a bunch of footage on my channel of people rage quitting, eating shit or even getting perfected because of it:
Basically, all you do is pick Deidara/Edo Tensei Itachi/Akutski Tobi and watch the wins rack up. I shit you not, it’s one of the most underutilized teams in the history of this franchise. All you have to do is time the assists intelligently, use your subs right and DON’T STOP SPAMMING CLAY BIRDS. EVER.
Other than that though, Utakata and Kaguya are also pretty fun. Utakata has those really slow bubble projectiles that will follow your opponent to the ends of the earth, which can lead to some really nasty setups and pressure. Kaguya is good because she can CHANGE THE FUCKING STAGE AROUND YOU and become a multitude of things. Change to the Desert or Ice stage, she becomes an insane zoner. Change to the Lava stage, she becomes an absolute nightmare up close. Change back to the normal stage…guess what? She’s still good as fuck. I’m actually always surprised by the amount of zoners this game has, and how different they all are from each other. You’re just gonna have to try them all to see who you really like.
If we’re talking assists…normally, it’s good to have something that gets your opponent to fuck off. Kimimaru, Edo Tensei Itachi, Hinata or Neji, Pain, Akutski tobi, Clone Itachi, Akutski Sasuke, Cherry Blossom Sakura…these are all great examples of assists your opponent will be FORCED to respect. It helps to have one assist who can quickly get someone off up close, and one who can apply pressure from far away.
I pick Edo Tensei Itachi and Tobi for example, because Itachi’s black flame will follow you to the ends of the earth while Tobi’s will pop up under you no matter how far away you are. You really just gotta experiment, see what teams have synergy and ultimately what you’re having the most fun with.
Oh, when I said PS2, I was talking about the Pre-Storm games lol.
I may give Utakata a shot, then. I wasn’t sure if he was good or not since his projectiles are so slow, but if they’re active for a while then he may be worth looking into. When you say apply pressure from close-up using a zoning character, you mean standing at like mid-range and using their projectiles to harass them in tandem with your assists, right?
Gotcha. Now when it comes to more offensive/close-range characters, what assists do you recommend? I’m looking at a couple of characters like Haku and Asuma, and I’m wondering how you build a team around them.
Kimimaru, Pain, Hinata, Neji, Clone Itachi, and Utakuta are some of my top picks…those are just really good “get off me” assists. Hinata and Neji’s are especially nice if your main character has a good grab because whether they block it or get locked in hitstun, you can combo them into a grab.
Clone Itachi is probably my favorite assist in the game, just because there’s so much Yomi to it. People will try to dash in, or pressure you on block, and it doesn’t matter because that Itachi clone will just slowly follow them to the ends of the earth and cause HUGE knockback if it lands. It’s a really good assist to set your own pace in a match when you’re close up.
If your Significant Other is talking a whole lot of shit about being great at this game, is it wrong to shatter their worldview with inhuman beatdowns? In-game beatdowns, not Domestic Violence beatdowns.
