naruto has always had terrible chapters accompanying good ones. the series started of bad, got decent at zabusa arc, since then the series has had its high with the major fights, then its lows with meaningless training/traveling and other bs like fnj going on.

this chapter basically served as a method to inflate naruto’s ego. i don’t think i need to remind people there are more crowd pleasing and entertaining ways of doing that besides a hug.

You know what the problem is? It’s not the fact that he FnJ’d himself; it’s that FnJ has become so overused. It’s actually a great plot device, and one that’s used it kung-fu films (as well as others). It would have more weight if he only did it once in a while. Before he went on the training trip, Naruto would FnJ you by beating the crap out of you. While you didn’t necessarily LIKE him afterwards, you respected his guts and ‘never-say-die’ attitude; in respecting him, you grew to like him in a more natural and believable way. But ever since J-man died and he went to train with the frogs, Naruto’s gotten so hippie-like, that he’s hugging it out with EVERYONE. I’m 100% certain that Pain was supposed to be the Gaara for this point in Naruto’s life; another example of where Naruto COULD have gone if he really let things get to him. But the way Naruto handled the situation, as well as the latest Sauce confrontation and the “Dark Naruto” thing and practically every other interpersonal conflict, FnJ has become cheapened, and no longer has the gravitas that it should.
Kishi basically painted himself into a corner, because most all the people Naruto has been FnJ-ing are people who HATE HATE HATE him or Konoha or both, so you can’t make those people respect you by beating them up; they’ll just get more pissed.

I thought it was kinda dumb.
“Dark Naruto” was basically a hackneyed plot device that tried to show us (yet again, for the umpteenth time) the angry/angsty/resentful/revengey side of every tailed beat host that ever got shunned by their village out of fear and resentment. Oh, and the type of fuck-the-world-they-don’t-care-about-me attitude that results from a few assassination attempts.
In truth, we didn’t need a “Dark Naruto” in order to rehash the whole hated/resentful Jinchuuriki vs. mean/resentful villager dynamic. We already had a “Dark Naruto”: his name was Garra.
Everything “Dark Naruto” said was explained by Garra forty five thousand chapters ago. The reason we had to go through this again?using a random manifestation of a dualistic negative personality residing inside Naruto?is because Naruto’s character development simply skipped right over the feeling of the resentful Jinchuuriki?same with Bee. He’s never had any of that incorporated into his character. Instead it’s always been, “Yeah they treated me like shit, but who cares about that?imma be the Hokage.” But that doesn’t change the fact that they treated him like shit. Naruto has had to rely on people similar to him to explain those feelings of resentment.
It’s like they said, “Well, what if Naruto had those resentful feelings inside him all along, you know, like every other Jinchuuriki in the series, but they’ve just been, like, repressed or something? Hey, what about a Dark Naruto? Ooh yeah!” …Well, what’s the point of any of that after Garra? The Garra situation was much more compelling for making the case for why a Jinchuuriki would have a major chip on their shoulder. They replaced the violent, awesome battle between Naruto and Garra?which perfectly fleshed out the Jinchuuriki vs. asshole villagers dynamic?with some shitty fight that Naruto had to have with himself in his mind.
Basically, take everything “Dark Naruto” said to Naruto about “us” and replace it with what Garra said to Naruto about “me”:
DN: "They hated us. They resented us. They made us sit on the swing by ourselves. They only care about us because we’re badass now."
Garra: “They hated me. They resented me. They tried to kill me. They only care about me because I poop sand.”
