good idea but you got Seth and Akuma allowed twice instead of Seth banned and Akuma allowed.
I’ll chalk that up to being sick right now. Option 4 should read Akuma is allowed but Seth is not.
Keits, I don’t know if I can find your article or forum post or whatever you wrote on but I once read something by you saying that in order for a character to be banned he must start winning all the tournaments. By the word “all” you can’t mean that literally or else you would have to un-ban dead body infinites and other glitches in Marvel and you would have to un-ban stuff in TvC I’m guessing, whatever you said was banned in that game.
So at that point you have to set a number on the tournaments. If Seth or Akuma or whoever wins X amount of tournies then he is banned. WHAT IS THAT NUMBER? Remember that when we rank characters and make bans in the fighting game community it is all based on top-level players being able to play the character to the fullest. So in all respects to my bud Damdai when I see him own up an online tournament, then beat Jwong at NEC (watch youtube for CTF tournies, he NEVER beats Jwong at those) and the day before NEC DarkSydePhil wins over folks like Jwong using Akuma that officially makes the tournament victory count…
Akuma - 3
rest of the cast of sixteen - 0
How is that fair? How many tournaments have to be wasted testing this before you finally decide enough is enough. He is shutting out the entire field. Tiger Woods has nothing on this guy. Michael Jordan had nothing on this guy. Akuma > Wayne Gretzky and Fedor Emelianenko put together at this point. Where do we draw the line Keits?
For the record I have gone out of my way to try to make a decision on the Akuma topic. I have played AT LEAST 30 matches already with Damdai vs. his Akuma and I have other matches of real ST against him in the past to compare this to. As good as he plays with Zangief and Ryu in regular ST I can tell how beefed up Damdai is in HD Remix with Akuma. I’m only telling you this last part so that you at least know I have put in some fair time and effort on this topic and I’m not just talking out of my ass or anything. I have a real basis for my argument.

Also please no more akuma discussions!!! Either make a rule or don’t!!!
Im with you man. I totally believe that HD Akuma is the best character in the game. I do not believe he is so good that he ruins the game, though.
I mean, how many tournaments has 3s chun-li won? Where do you stop looking at the player who won and start thinking its the character? Why is winning a problem? Isnt the idea to use the best character and do the dirtiest stuff to beat every other player at the event? This may not be your style, but it has certainly won many many events.
Do you think Evo HD Remix is going to be 8/8 Akumas? If so, perhaps thats where we should start either looking at a ban, or thinking about just playing classic ST with the HD graphics. Otherwise, aren’t we just talking about a great character being played by great players? I know I’d enjoy 3s a ton more without Yun/Chun/Ken, but again, this is competition. Its not playtime. It doesnt matter what is more enjoyable (your house-rules version of the game vs the real thing), what matters is getting out there and trying to win.
So yeah, you have one or two Akuma players really wrecking people right now in the US. Did we already forget that the first year or two of tournament play is nearly always dominated by gimicks? Did we forget the HUGE movement to ban Dhalsim when A3 came out, only to allow him and find out he isnt even the best in the game? Its not like only one player can choose Akuma. Its always fair, because both players have the option to use him if they see fit. It may be boring that way if he becomes the only viable character, but it takes a lot more than what anyone has given to show that is what HD Akuma is.
So, i guess to end and answer your question; I’ll start to consider a ban if major tournaments (over 100 or so people in the game in question, events like FR and Evo) start to repeatedly show 7 or 8 of the top 8 players using the same character. Until then, its just “very good”, not “too good.” Otherwise, Its time to start banning a lot more… We certainly dont ‘draw the line’ at less than 3 months after release with only 3 tournament victories.
Keits, I like the comparison to Chun Li but I still don’t see it that way. I just sent you a PM. I don’t think I want to fill up the tourney thread already. Haha.
Indy, did we figure out what that 4th option is supposed to be again? Is that Seth allowed but Akuma banned? Not sure I know what 3 people voted for. Not sure those 3 people know exactly what they voted for either. Dang Floridians! :wgrin:
That’s kind of a weird reason not to travel to hang with good people.
P.S. Since Seth is a boss char who wasn’t playable in the arcade I don’t see anything weird about banning him until people can playtest him. Like this is going to be a high-level SFIV showdown anyway, does it matter either way?
I was thinking about going, for sure. Its not all that weird a reason at all, as I explained, for someone with a limited travel budget. This tournament is 6+ hours from me by car.
Well decent tournies are pretty rare, and even though this isn’t a major or anything it seems like you should reconsider letting one character banned in two new games – when “official” rules aren’t established yet by anybody – being the deal breaker.
ed: haha, where’s the option to ban Seth and not Gouki?
i hear ya keits they do dumb shit at these sometimes
but at least in this case you know about it before you drive forever to get there
You could always go to his tourney instead.
I didn’t realize people would cross the seven seas to play Seth. LOL, I almost want to play him now.
Goukipoo "The Beard"
Indianapolis/Chicago
3S, HDR, SFIV
I can bring a small TV and DC.
Are side tourney’s gonna allowed? Looks like the day might be really packed with the new games.
I can’t figure out how to change the poll option for number 4 to read “Akuma is allowed but Seth is not.” If somebody knows how please let me know.
I went to the last one… for tekken. It was a bad decision but I did meet vega. Now I will play at least 2 of the games at this tournament, so I think it is worth going. Tekken was a bust last time we ended up doing round robin… BY ROUNDS. It didn’t make sense. But to tell you the truth it was a pretty good tournament, plus it was good to go to my old home again. Also it was kinda stinky in there but then again they ran a smash brothers tournament so that is to be expected.
I honestly dont care what you guys decide hehe. I just want to have a good time.
I will be playing Seth in casuals though. Got to see if he is too good or not (dont think he’ll be honestly).
Akuma is alright to me so far…
We didn’t run tekken at all or say we were going to run it. Smash wasn’t at the last one either. You might be thinking of the one in Jan. which wasn’t ran by us.
Jason- I’ll put ya down. Side tourneys are cool. Let me know what you want to run and I’ll post it as a side one. Most of the setups people bring we’ll need for tourney games though.
Is 3rd being run on the machine there? If so, I’m assuming its an American bat-style stick with concave buttons yes?
It’s all console.
Awwwwwwwww…damn, I was looking forward to have ALL DAMN DAY to link Chun’s moves into super. It’s so much slower.
